The addition of Historical presets into Hearts of Iron IV was an awesome thing for massive history nerds like myself. Now, I play REALLY historically, using only the stupid tanks and planes that happened in real life! I'm aiming to do this with EVERY country in the game (or at least every major) so let me know a good suggestion down in the comments for more countries to play!

By the way, glider tanks means to go down the Paratrooper special forces doctorine and getting "Armored Paratroopers." You get a support company that's a bunch of light tanks that can also be paradropped, unlike the Armored Tank recon.

@@Aldrahill One thing I forgot to add in the original comment. If you're unsure if a unit can be paradropped, there's a green parachute by the name that will tell you. I'm sure you know this, since you've definitely played longer than I have, but just thought I'd mention it.

7:20 62% reliability, for a basic medium tank chassis without any reliability bonuses from MIO or modules (like torsion bar suspension, or wet ammo storage) is actually VERY GOOD, and german tanks are not any more reliable. "Arms against tyranny" nerfed medium tanks base reliably to the ground- the basic chassis now has 80% base reliability (used to be 100%) improved medium tank chassis has 100% (used to be 130%) and advanced medium tank chassis has 120% (used to be 160%) but all the guns and engine/armour levels remove just as much reliability as they used to. On the positive side, due to chances of how the engine/armour 'levels' work, all chassis (except interwar one) also come with a big bump in base speed (as opposed to just armour and reliability, and minor speed increase for 'advanced' chassis, like they used to) Gone are the times where you could build a medium tank that can keep up with motorised, have the best gun, never break down, and still somehow have armour to rival a heavy tank. Medium tanks finally require doing the thing they were named after- COMPROMISE. It also means that, as I already mentioned- ALL early mediums suck, British, French, German, Russian- they all have shit reliability, just like they used to IRL. IRL ALL medium tanks had reliability problems and broke down all the time, yes, the Panzer III and Panzer IV's had that problem too. And throughout the war nothing fundamentally changed- a Panther didn't actually break down much more often than a Panzer IV. The difference was mostly that when the Panzer IV's were breaking down, the germans were winning, so whatever broke down in Poland could've been safely transported to the warehouses and repaired and be operational again for France etc. On the other hand, when panthers broke down, unless they could be repaired *then and there* on the field, they were abandoned or destroyed by their own crew. Same with allied tanks- Crusader wasn't some absurdly unreliable piece of crap, just that when they broke down in africa in 1940, the rest of the army would retreat, and germans would 'finish off' the wrecks to make them unrepairable. When a Cromwell or a Sherman would break down in France in 1944, there were 10 engineers for every tank that would go and fix it. The only tank that suffered high rate of 'reliability issues' was T-34 because just like in 1941, in 1945 Soviets still didn't care to repair that unergonomic, hastily cobbled up piece of garbage, unless it was something minor.

Indeed, with USA is basically a secure victory in a mid term. You can fight Axis alone since they declare war to Soviet Union, the problem is that colonial management (Autonomy and all that)and British industry slots sucks.

Watched all of your historical series and still loving them. Have you thought about turning things up a notch and taking the national focuses in their historical order? At least, what Paradox considers their historical order? (Hearts of Iron IV/common/ai_strategy_plans) is where you'll find them. Just a thought. Anyway, great job!

1:48 Intervening in Norway & Sweden is actually historical. It was a preemptive invasion to stop German access to swedish steel via the port in narvik during winters. The campaign was a flop barely getting of the fround , Germany invaded Norway, France fell and it was abandoned

British/Commonwealth armour units follow cavalry traditions, where a brigade is equivalent to a regiment, a squadron is equivalent to a battalion, a troop is equivalent to a company/platoon (it doesn't map exactly 1:1), and a patrol is equivalent to a section. Hope this helps.

In the situation where you have all the tech to do a preset but it is bugging out I think you should be able to manually create what is in the preset.

If you ever feel like you want a more difficult game, and a more historical game of HOI4 I'd heavily recommend Expert AI 5.0. That mod also allows you to change AI behavior so that the AI will also use historical templates, making it more fair and more historical. Great video btw, this series is a ton of fun, and something I really should be doing myself when I play HOI4, I've mostly been playing SP while using "meta" divisions, making it too easy and kind of boring.

Indeed, I love Expert AI! Decided not to use it for this series, because sometimes the handicap of using historical divisions is too painful and would get me rekt xD I am going to be using Black Ice in the future for another re-do of this series sometime in the future though!

Honestly I tried expert ai, I'm somehow a experienced player but what it does is making the AI spy on you to counter every single thing you do (Al doesn't even get your data from intelligence agency's, it literally does it from the game code) aside of that in the hard modes(Not the AI behaviour)it just gives you a ton of fckg attrition and the AI never gets to have supply problems and other buffs to the ai, in case you just play it for the behaviour is still unfair, I'd rather play multiplayer than that mod once.

To be fair there is part research for special forces in marines which is commando marines which does use boats because they can move to the sea without any port because they can. Btw it can be very op if use properly

I reckon a China game would be interesting for these playthroughs. Seeing whether it recreates the massive Japanese occupation and the challenge of fighting off with what scraps you can get your hands on. Also, the tidbit of crack divisions beign German trained. Probably difficult to research, but would be interesting to see what you could find.

i remember doing sort of the same thing but without all the attention to detail, less research, and more leniency as the war went on, but the historical divisions i made were incredibly tough and i made it a goal to hold france to the last man, which i accomplished by late 40. ever since then ive made it my MO to always hold france no matter what as the UK because its some of the most fun defensive gameplay i can have as a major

10:32 in MP task forces are good but in SP they won't survive AI death stacks. I'd concentrate them in 2 beefy task forces of 80-120 to maximize the carriers' effect and make them less vulnerable.

the reason why cruisers are mediums and infantries are light tanks are because you can stack matildas with armor for cheap "heavies" and getting 4km/7 at armor 9 which is historical (infantry in hoi4 is 4km/h fast) and same with mediums but for speed

The Scandinavian intervention focus for Britain is actually fairly historical. They (and the French) essentially chose to violate Norway's neutrality BEFORE the Nazis came in, in fear of just that.

One of the problems with the divisions where the fact that British infantry, from what I remember reading where noted as being Semi-Mechanized, due to the large amounts of Bren Gun Carriers/ Universal Carriers. which arent really represented in HOI

one thing i dislike about the IFV doctrines with paradox is that neither bonuses nor negatives are granted, IFVs should have higher coordination, and perhaps even multiplication of IF soft attack or organization, but lowered armour, because it becomes a more ambushable target, theres no real other way im affraid to tactically simulate the negatives of a IFV in hoi4. cruiser tanks should probably be medium tanks, or light, the problem is that the cruiser tanks kinda themselves splitup, they were either medium tanks, or light tanks.

I'm sure I've read many accounts about them all having radios but I can't source them as I can't remember where I read them. Look up the Wireless set No. 11 - 19,000 of them were made pre war, for tanks and HQs

Also, the Soviets attack Iran through a focus which also gives them a decision to call in the British. If the Soviet AI completes the focus but doesn't have enough PP for the decision, they just invade on their own and effectively lock the British player out of that entire conflict. It's annoying as fuck.
