You have to remember that this was several decades ago. Back then, people weren't all crying, moaning, snowflakes offended by everything. If someone was smoking, and you didn't like it, you held your tongue and walked away like a gentleman. Of course you were expected to ask permission to smoke in another persons house. Their answer was final, and you respected that.
