Living in Bristol for a few years helped. I student taught there and my cooperating teachers were stunned that I could understand 6 year old Jason in spite of his limited vocabulary, thick Bristolian accent, and a severe speech defect. The only time my supervisor observed me teaching, I sorted out a problem involving a missing plastic barrette. That worthless butterfly meant so much that I had to do something. I had bonded with this miscreant. It takes one to know one. It took me about 20 seconds of interviewing him before I found it tucked into his shoe. “Honesty is the best path to follow.” Then quickly into the lesson. I loved the show Monk. I have keen observational skills. I once told a shocked young stranger in a grocery store that she ought to get a new boyfriend. Yes! You wouldn’t have ruined your new white parka if he’d cleared the snow off your car for you. There’s a world out there. Notice things.

@@johnmulligan455 Oh boy, you're getting dumber by the minute! What do you think "typo" means? It's short for "typographical ERROR"! Please tell us that English is not your native tongue; otherwise, we as a society are doomed. Ok, let me spell it out for you, Einstein. Error No. 1: The pronoun referring to a female in the third person is "her", not "here". Error No. 2: You wrote, "... there is lots". "Is" is a singular linking verb. "Lots" is plural. Do you remember in third grade when your English teacher told you about subject-verb agreement, meaning that if the subject is singular or plural, then so too must the verb be singular or plural respectively? Or were you eating paint that day? Error No. 3: In the English language, when writing, in order to provide clarity, we use a little thing called punctuation. For instance, if you're asking a question, you finish the sentence with a question mark. If your making a command, you finish the sentence with an exclamation point. If you're making a statement, you finish the sentence with a period. Do you see how that works? In all sincerity, please tell us that English is not your native language!

And as I've said before, what can't speak can't lie, so don't try any of this moody with me and try to con me again, otherwise you can rest assured you'll get a handful of fives and a gob full of teeth, broken. It's weird to me that she can't understand him, and that she then corrects him and says it's not very good English -- it's actually a bit painful to watch her. I guess we hear such a range of accents thanks to film that I'm used to a much broader range of them than if I had lived in this era, and this is back before his accent was considered cool and emulated by all the young people in the UK. But I understood almost every word but one of the names, and two of the non-names. I know what "fives" are, and I wouldn't have needed this repeated or spelled, beyond the three words I missed. I'm American, but I grew up watching a lot of British TV shows, so I guess I've been exposed to various accents of the British Isles that others might not be familiar with, and I guess her range of experience was different. Kudos to her for her honest reactions, and her refusal to keep typing when she felt uncomfortable! There's nothing wrong with her for not having the ear and the cultural knowledge to understand the guy, but I am a bit gob-smacked at how repeated her ignorance was over the first few sentences: he hasn't even started using any slang yet at that point; it's just his accent that she's completely lost with!
