Diving the Upper Dinas Silica Mine, nr Pontneddfechan in South Wales. 1 dive conducted on July 29th, 2023 over 65mins and a max depth of 23m. 2 Divers with OC sidemount configuration, the diver in the video is Michael Thomas.
Silica mining began here in 1807 and continued on and off through to 1964, supplying silica rock for building furnaces and fireplaces throughout the UK and internationally. The bricks and rubble seen throughout the upper sections of the mine today, came from the demolished mine buildings that surrounded the main entrance.
In addition to the rock formations and exposed lithology, there is plenty of mining equipment left behind to explore in the passageways.
