On a beautiful winter's morning, East Midlands Railway's 180113 is seen running from Bedford to Wellingborough. I was surprised to see this train pull in as I hadn't realised EMR had taken these on. This video forms part of the lockdown #TrainRideTuesdays series.
Class 180 "Adelante" Diesel Multiple Unit
Manufacturer: Alstom
Engine: Cummins QSK19, 750bhp
Transmission: Voith T312 BRE (3 speed)
0:02 - 1st gear
1:43 - 2nd gear (64mph)
3:45 - 3rd gear (94mph)
Between 4:00 and 7:20 it seems to be cruising at about 100mph. From 7:20 it starts accelerating again and hits 125mph at approx 8:50. It stays at full speed for a couple of seconds before easing off.
You known when they're doing between 50mph and 60mph as there is a deep whine (1:10-1:30 and 9:55 - 10:05). Another distinctive sound these units make is the squealing from brakes as the train comes to a halt. This can be heard from 11:10 to 11:20.
The video was 11 minutes long, but I tagged on an additional clip from Kettering to Market Harborough which has the speedometer in view and it powering only up to 110mph. This starts from 11:24
If you don't mind all the noise (I don't!) then these are quite nice to travel on - and they don't have that film on the window that blocks out the signal like the 222s do.
