Was, not "is." The civil service in those days was opposed to change, or at least too much of it. That is the very definition of conservatism: ensuring that society changes slowly and only when absolutely necessary, because every intentional change is always accompanied by unintentional side-effects. As Edmund Burke wrote: "Laws, like houses, lean upon one another." The civil service NOW -- two generations later -- has become captured by precisely the opposite ideology. They want as much change as possible, so that they may play the part of the White Knights who save society by completely reorganising it. We have seen this play before, written by such famous dramatists as Vladimir Lenin, Mao Zedong, and Pol Pot.

@@jordankidd4443The point of a satire is to show the flaws in the system as it exists. Everybody in the show is wrong most of the time, whether that's because Sir Humphrey wants stability and power for the civil servants and upper class or because Hacker wants votes or whatever. Their attitudes being ridiculously wrong is the point. And the show is still referred to on the floor of the House of Commons when criticizing this or that thing as something a character in the show would do. The characters' attitudes being ridiculously wrong *is the point*. That hasn't aged at all, because there are still people like Sir Humphrey and Hacker in government.

This comes into what was once said by a politician about what the hardest parts of being President / Prime Minister are. Interviewer: "It seems no matter how easy things could be, politicians constantly talk about how hard it is to do? So, I ask you how hard is politics?" Politician: "Well, you're right, the basic parts are actually incredibly easy to do. The hardest part of politics is trying to do and say things that appease the public, but with the primary focus on actually only doing things that benefit the few. What's hardest is doing so without the public ever finding find out!"

The thing is, the video almost gets to the point. First, the UK was defended. That's the whole point of nuclear weapons, if you have the ability to end the world, everyone else gets really hesitant about seriously endangering you. Its supremely annoying in how effective it is, and its certainly not a simple process, but it *is* effective. But a large portion of national defense is giving the citizenry the impression that they are safe. That they can go on with their happy, productive, consuming lives and not be afraid of anything happening. Security Theater isn't a replacement for actual Security, but it is an integral part of the process too. But try saying "maybe nuclear deterrence isn't entirely a bad thing" in the height of the cold war in fiction...
@TheOmegaXicor

Even today, politicians thinking that a retaliatory strike is probably pointless shows sound reasoning, SAYING that you wouldn't authorise a retaliatory strike shows politicians have brains like farmyard latrines. If MADness has kept us safe for decades why endanger that????
@anivicuno9473
@anivicuno9473 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, you almost got to the point that this is a 2 minute clip from a 30 minute episode. The nuclear deterrence idea has already been touched on, the whole episode was about the fact that the PM most likely would not press the button in the face of an invasion. The PM admits this, and so the chief scientist recommends diverting funds from a new system (that they know won't be operational for about a decade after purchase) to spending it on R&D and employing (and retraining) people via the armed forces. The point the scene is making about Britain being undefended is that without committing nuclear suicide, Britain is undefended. The Soviet armies would steamroll NATO and everyone knows it. Humphrey pushes the security theatre from Harrods option, while the chief scientist recommends cutting their losses and just bolstering the domestic economy.

The point of Trident is to make sure no one attacks the UK which hasn't happened since the UK gained a nuclear deterrent. Foreign adventures are for the ego of ministers and the outcomes are basically irrelevant to the wellbeing of the general population.

The best and most effective weapon is the one you never have to use. The point isn't to win the fight, but to avoid having to fight in the first place. War. Sucks.

It's not a laugh track. The programmes were recorded live in front of an audience.

The bbc has a long tradition of filming comedy in front of a live audience It's largely gone now but it would have been unthinkable not to back then It's not like the American shows where the laughs are either completely fake or 'sweetened' in post production

the only people who liked this were the clever ones. the word play excluded the ( hard of understanding). that's why most people from the age of this comedy didn't watch it, which is sad and shameful. since then the tv output has become ever more low-brow. i Believe this is one of the smartest comedies ever written

It applies to the majority of western nations far more than it applies to Russia. European military has been in decay for over 70 years now and it's not going to change now because the cost of having a military is insanely prohibitive unless your country is called USA and the need to have a military is near zero (despite all the recent drama). Armies got downscaled to a point where they can manage a police operation but not much more. What Germans or Brits get on a 50 billion budget is a genuine joke in terms of weapon and ammunition production and maintenance, neither country is even remotely in a position to fight an actual war if an army randomly materializes on its doorstep from the void. For quite a number of obvious reasons it's not going to happen though so it doesnt actually matter than Britain doesn't have a military worth shit. Also lol at "we arent lying about Russia".

@@LemureLemure Have you seen the news recently? Russia's army is being annihilated en masse and their people are told they have nukes when they are almost certainly rusted to decay since they are 40 years old and not maintained, if the army is full of theft and corruption, you don't think the nukes are? This sketch applies to Russia 100%

@@TheOmegaXicor Yes, Ive seen the news recently. I've seen Russia actively use Iskander missile, the same missile that undermined the IRNF treaty because they built a a convertible long range nuke vessel under a guise of a lesser weapon. Clearly not rusted. I've also seen them use a number of other nuclear capable platforms such as Kalibr. I hope we arent we arent going to have a silly conversation about "Russia will run out of missiles soon" 2022 news takes or act like those are the only platforms Russia has for some reason and there are no larger ones available. You could argue "they dont have the payloads" but I dont see how that's even remotely possible when the country never had a functioning green/anti-nuclear lobby and runs the largest nuclear corporation in the world. Countries with worse nuclear industries have nukes (unless we are going to assume nobody actually has nukes and that's all a lie) Corruption goes a long way undermining the country but it's pretty obvious you can work around it if you are paying pennies for labour. When the average Russian factory worker gets something around 300 to 500 usd a month you can produce weapons very cheaply and at a large scale. There's a reason why the west is struggling to supply the necessary number of shells o

r guided munitions to Ukraine. Or why the ukrainans are now complaining about Russia havng more drones in the air than they ever did (the august forbes article if you are interested). All of that despite the financial help to ukraine adding up to twice the usual Russian military budget (though that got expanded significantly for 2024). I think you should not underestimate what former 2nd/3rd world countries can actually do militarily. Ignoring Russia/Ukraine the best armed country in Europe would be Poland, much for the same value per dollar spent reason. (though one could question the actual value they get from some of the contracts and not the production they are establishing on their own)
