That would actually be counterproductive. Do you think we'd get more capable politicians, less prone to corruption, and less dependent on second jobs? No. A major reason why Singapore is such a success story is because they pay their politicians very well. The electorate is more a problem than politician salaries.

@@tarquin161234 A former colony, a tax haven, a place smaller than London with a population of 6 million is the perfect comparison for the UK. Unfortunately, not all of us were financially literate early. I was 35 when I finally educated myself and started taking steps. I went from $176,000 in debt with zero savings or retirement to now, 2 years later, fully debt-free and over $1000,000 net worth. I know that doesn't SOUND like a lot, but I'm incredibly proud of it. If you are completely ignorant about politics then you might think that. Borrowing for investment into the UK's infrastructure is a win win. It's much needed. If you borrow for "tax cuts for the rich" like Boris Johnson did in 2017/18 or unneeded QE for things like Brexit or lockdown - then that is a short-term win, long term lose. We are swimming in long-term loses of the Tories at the moment. Finally Labour is turning the tables to short-term loss, long-term win. Sure we are going to have to foot the bill in the short term, but it's the ONLY way to long-term victory. It's so refreshing to see, even if you right-wing troll bots try to comment otherwise.

The 35% or so of the current UK population in technical poverty are looking to the Labour Government to improve their standard of living, healthcare and housing. And help many out of increasing debt. The conservatives ignored us for 15 years, despite lots of promises and claims that austerity (actually caused by their rich, greedy friends) was only temporary. There needs to be a drastic redistribution of wealth, which should fall on those most able to afford it. The difference in the quality of life between households with an annual income of 30k and those of earning 130k and above is substantial. Over the years, the Tories have , under Thatcher, introduced a series of "stealth" taxes such as council tax , water charges, sewerage charges, and increased gas and electricity charges (who can remember their grandparents having a tin with shillings (5p) to put in the gas meter?), Rents have been allowed to reach ludicrous levels which now actually exceed the state pensions. It used to be that you could get housing benefit if your rent was higher than one third your weekly income, but the Tories took this away. All this has severely impacted on those in the lower quartile of earners. It's time for Labour to show what they can do, or they will be out on their ear next election with little chance of winning another election.

Reflecting on the pivotal decisions necessary to drive the United Kingdom forward, it’s evident that the current trajectory poses serious economic and social challenges. The UK has been mired in a cost-of-living crisis and surging inflation since late 2021, compounded by pressures from the global energy market and the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, these challenges have been exacerbated by the aftermath of Brexit, which stripped the nation of benefits such as frictionless trade, streamlined regulatory standards, and an integrated labor market. While some drawbacks of EU membership were mitigated, it’s increasingly apparent that the government at the time failed to establish a robust, forward-thinking strategy to capitalize on this newfound independence. Since Brexit, the UK economy has struggled, evidenced by unprecedented levels of national debt and sluggish growth. Instead of leveraging Brexit as a launchpad for innovation and trade diversification, the government appears to have underestimated the structural adjustments required, and today, we see the tangible consequences. Public debt has skyrocketed, without clear progress toward economic resilience. Meanwhile, essential public services-chiefly, the NHS-face acute strain. Established in 1948 to provide universal healthcare access, the NHS remains one of the UK’s most treasured institutions. However, current resource allocation and staff shortages have led to shocking limitations in healthcare access. Taxpayers contribute billions annually to sustain this system, yet many experience prolonged wait times and barriers to care that are disproportionate for a country of the UK’s stature. The United Kingdom has long been considered a global leader, but without decisive, calculated reforms, the nation’s standing risks further erosion. Strategic planning and judicious economic choices are needed to navigate this period of hardship with a view toward long-term sustainability. I would gladly accept temporary austerity if it meant that, in the long run, the UK could regain its footing as a self-sufficient, competitive power on the global stage. However, continuing along the current path, without an endgame beyond mere survival, offers little promise for the future. Real change requires a vision that looks beyond the short term and focuses on rebuilding the nation's foundations for enduring strength and prosperity.

Household outgoings increasing by maybe £10k a year or more. And you get nothing extra for it.
