Had Roger and Simon's dead heat happen in a later series, both would have probably had to restart the course from the beginning of the last section (either the balance beam or the seesaws) in a sudden death run.

Yeah thats what i was thinking lol In 1992 with it being a brand new show on Tv the first shows weren't selling out unlike 1993/1994 onwards were basically the whole arena was packed!!
@martinjohnston70715 жыл бұрын
It's amazing how quiet the shows in the first series are, compared to later ones. The crowd cheer much less, the competitors are less loud, and even John Sachs doesn't reach the same levels of excitement in his after-the-event commentary. Neither do Ulrika and John. When they explain the weapons in Danger Zone, they sound like they're explaining how to fasten seatbelts on a plane. Plus they hadn't realised that some of the rules needed changing to make the events more exciting, like the defensive rule in Duel. It's still worth watching, but later series are much better.

I was thinking that too. Shows like these, and even more current shows, tend to zero in on one or two things about a contestant as talking points. You see it a lot on (the inferior) Wipeout.
@bobomb19863 жыл бұрын
I think they made a point in the Series 2 final that when Jean Klenk went up against Georgina Berger, it was the eldest contestant ever against the youngest, Jean was either 36 or 37 at the time. There was a white-haired chap later on who I think was older, but I can't remember how old... And speaking of the Series 2 final, check out what Phil did better than any other contestant - the slide on the mat after the zipwire. Look at pictures of Michael van Wijk (Wolf) at the age of 69. Looks more physically fit now than he did then!
@davidfearis73353 жыл бұрын
46:10 One thing I've noticed looking at The Original American Gladiators was that the contenders after landing from The Zip-Line they have to cross a White Line before they can continue on the course Did Rodger gain a unfair advantage by taking a short-cut here, not that it matters hugely seeing as both contenders didn't qualify for The Semi-Finals
@mikeykm19932 жыл бұрын
I agree - seems pretty unfair that he got away with that!
@Tubewings8 жыл бұрын
One of the things I didn't like about the first series is the elimination format. That is, only the four highest scoring contenders who won the Eliminator move on to the semifinals. Because of this, you could win the course, but still be knocked off because a later contender scored higher than you (which, spoiler alert, happened to three contenders from this episode).

Those atlaspheres look heavier than the US originals, when contestants try to slow them down they don't slow up at all, but scoring here is way easier, in US original you have to settle the atlasphere to a standstill, here you just have to roll over the top.

During Danger-Zone's Run throughout the whole Gladiators era, the MORTAR really was the most useless and pointless weapon in the armory, no-one ever came close to hitting the target with that weapon so it really should been replaced with something else after this series had ended.

Also I don't know what the Female Gladiators were doing they sure must've known they couldn't double team on a contender and that they could only blocked the contender on the same side as them. They break through at the same time, but Simon was legs-first making him "artificially longer" somewhat :P I agree Roger should've won, but due to the wonky "highest scores" format of the 1st series it doesn't matter in the end

In the replay as I see, it certainly looks like Roger made it through the Paper Burst 1st making him the rightful winner of the heat, not that it made much difference later on as both their scores were far too low to qualify for the Semi-Finals, had they used the paper they did from 1994 onwards it would certainly split better and we would have seen it more clearly than we could with the black paper here.

All 4 Contenders didn't score enough in certain events where they had the best opportunity to do so! Claire didn't pick up enough in Atlaspheres, Danger-Zone & Swingshot where I feel its easier to score points! Rosie also didn't do well enough in Atlaspheres & Swingshot by scoring 0 POINTS in both events! Mind both Claire & Rosie lost far too much time when they kept getting TANGLED during Swingshot! Roger didn't do well in Atlaspheres & The Wall and left it too late to really make a comeback unless he was to win Hang-Tough or Duel! And most of the time in Atlaspheres he was TOTALLY UNMARKED and failed to take advantage of the situation! Simon got off to a great start in Atlaspheres but failed to score in The Wall & Danger-Zone losing too many crucial points!
