I can remember watching this episode when it was first aired in 1998. Sarah Hasselby looked splendid in that yellow kit and still does look splendid. She is my favourite contender on Gladiators and although l was disappointed she did not progress l feel that she did not take the events seriously. It was only when she was eliminated did it sink in. Tubewings, that was why Gladiators noticed it too when it was skipped to Heat 6 instead of Heat 3, Gladiators presumed this was in error. So hopefully, Challenge TV will show Heat 3 next week.

A lot of people seem to mock series 7 as quality goes down. But realistically viewership will have been falling anyway ever since S4 I think (when Jet went, coincidence - you decide :P). And series 6 was the standard format, but to me that was the worst. The new gladiators weren't bad, but they never gave them much screen time outside of events. And tightrope is just awful, less skill as much as who has the fewest complications on the pulley and changeover. And none of the contenders stood out as massively memorable. Way too many contender injuries ruining the momentum I can't blame the producers for trying new things in S7. The bigger selection of music was good. I thought Vulcan was a welcome addition and the theatrics weren't that bad. The new events were....okay. Vertigo was the best, requiring decent skill, and there was some tension towards the end sometimes. Catapult was whatever, but probably fun for the contenders playing it. Dogfight gets ripped for being ridiculous spectacle, but apart from the weird blimp setup it was alright....the 2 hit system made it intense, and some of the duels were decent. Gladiators has always been about spectacle, with atlaspheres, skytrak, pendulum, etc. You gotta think, it must be really hard to devise events that are both entertaining to watch on TV, and be reasonable for the contenders and gladiators. It's not the best series, but the usual formula wasn't working, and I found it a lot more entertaining than S6. And maybe even S1, but that was the foundation. The only thing I really can't stand in S7 is the audience disputes with Jon Anderson, so cringey...

The show implemented poor gimmick games which ruined it. But to be honest shows do have a shelf life and they do decline with time naturally as you allude to in the post. 1996-96 was where it peaked in my opinion, Mark Everitts season was fun and it felt organic with the glad and contender appreciation. Vulcan was horrible, way over the top with the heel character and with Wolf there it seems totally un-needed. I can remember Wolf tagging with a Finish glad at some point? it felt real and organic, they tried to have that with Wolf and Vulcan and it felt forced.

What an episode! I mean you had Sarah who for me didn't seem to be taking any of it seriously and made a right plonker of herself and WOLF VS VULCAN ON DUEL!!! And I thought Hunter VS Wolf on Sumo Ball in the BOTG episode was a great battle!

In Australia, they played Skytrack the right way up haha! Well...that wasn’t totally correct - they did play it upside down as well, which would’ve been right way up if viewed from the UK right 😂 The Australian version did, however, use the Tilt music for the game (as the Skytrack music was used as to promote the major prizes in season 1, and for Whiplash in season 3).
