Robert Johnson was a Delta Blues singer, singwriter from Mississippi. Supposed to have quipped that he sold his soul for his guitar skills at a crossroads of highway 61 and 49.

I liked your thoughts on this one! My understanding is this song is a retelling of the legend of the blues guitarist Robert Johnson who is said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for guitar skills.

Robert definitely comes to mind.

The line about the devil knowing him from his hands reminds me of the scene in Shooter where the older gentleman knows Marky Mark is a sniper just by taking his hand for a moment.

I absolutely LOVE Colter Wall! I saw him last year at Gruene Hall (pronounced green. Lol) which is a famous dancehall in Texas and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to! A few of the people who attended ate at the restaurant next door beforehand and so did he. They said he was so nice and humble and loved seeing him out in town with everyone else. Musicians don’t do that anymore these days. At least not without security.

Your comment about the lyric focus on the price of dealing with a devil who doesn't _look_ like a devil reminded me of the opening line from the Rolling Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil" that begins "Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm a man of wealth and taste." Maybe it's the power of music to reach down deep inside us and release feelings that we didn't know we had or thought that we weren't _supposed_ to have that makes us think that the Devil has something to do with it. Hm?

If you are not watching the series Yellowstone check it out. I don't know who is in charge of the music, but it uses these little known artists like Colter and Tyler. They even used Whiskey Myers for the house band once.

im going old school with my request because the man died just this morning, and its kind of fitting to this song, The devil went down to Georgia by Charlie Daniel's.

Who died?
@OliWilford4 жыл бұрын
Ah, Charlie Daniel. I've just heard the bands music for the first time today. It is a tragedy. But what a legacy to leave behind. I purposefully haven't listened to the devil went down to Georgia. And I'm going to leave it a few weeks before I review. But it is coming Joseph. The main reason I'm not going to review immediately is because I just didn't know too much about them before the news broke and I don't want it to look like the channel is reviewing them because they're in the headlines. The fans and family need a time to grieve! But I will definitely be reviewing them over the coming weeks.

Funny thing about brick layers and hard workers, Joe Rogan said he has been trying to get Colter on his show but hasn't been able to because 6 months out of the year he is a work hand on a ranch in Texas. Then I think the pandemic hit I believe so everything halted. Dude seems to live it too... don't know how much that means other than I think it means we get good grounded music for years to come.
@seyoch3 жыл бұрын
I like your interpretation of the lyrics, but mate, this is about the crossroads... at 6:20 you mention what calter 'says'... but colter is quoting the conversation he had with de devil, how they met. This song is not about working class people and what kind of work they do... being a 6 string picker is a breed of guitar players (the playing style "selling your soul to the devil"-songs have(most of them)). I always like your straight away honest reaction towards good music.. Your expression show that this music hits you.. love it! I'm a big fan of colter wall and love to see other people enjoy it too!

I've been looking forward to this one, and your thoughts are interesting as ever. Clearly, the legend of Robert Johnson is at the very least being referenced in the lyrics, but at a new angle which avoids many of the cliches associated with that story. Colter is a real painter with words, drawing you in within the first couple of lines and that's no mean feat. I don't subscribe to any reaction channels, except yours. Primarily because you cover more of the darker side of country which really appeals to me, and partly because its refreshing to hear responses to this music from a Brit! I think you're doing a great job of it. Finally, tell us about the guitar in the background. Is it yours? do you play? What is it? ...I don't think it's a Taylor (but it might be from the headstock shape and the narrower neck), and that capo is enormous, possibly a 12 string capo judging by how far it protrudes. I'm facinated!
@OliWilford4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Peter. So grateful to hear that you've subscribed. It really means a lot. I do have an obsession with the darker side of country now I've been exposed to it. More than likely because I've had some pretty low times in my past, so it's a great outlet. But hey, that's a story for another time! I'm so early on with my journey into country. It has quickly become my favourite genre. Tyler and Colter have also become two of my favourite artists of all time and it is difficult to refrain from listening to more songs. However, without this channel I wouldn't be a able to learn more about the backstory's behind the music. So I full appreciate the education. As for the guitar - it's my old mans. He used to be in a local band back in the day and he's a pretty decent guitarist! I've taken one of his on and I'm currently learning - it's a Wesley. Weird though, because I first learnt as a kid and I got pretty good, picked it back up for the first time in 15 years, can't hit a chord. But we'll get there I'm sure.

If there is one band you should jam that is similar to your genres on this page, it would be Pinegrove. (The song “the alarmist” is amazing) If you’re looking for a band that changed the way I write and listen to music it would be the band Microwave. Their song Vomit is so unique and so well written. They also helped me learn how to write contemporary music! Much love brother! Keep up the hard work🤙
