Jonathan C. Some people buy in agencies because they don’t won’t to plan. Some others because you don’t have to pay all in once. You also have scammers like WorldVentures who you pay a monthly fee to. Of course, in 2017 the same thing happened to them, could not pay their employees and vendors millions of dollars, people got to destinations only to find the hotels refused service as WV had taken their money, but didn't pay the hotels. Meanwhile, the C level execs were buying themselves 911s and Maserati's.

That sucks. In the USA. I would just dispute the charge with my bank, have money back same day, buy another flight and be out. Not sure of other countries, but Federal Law in USA grants this. Same day money back, depends on bank.

In the 1970,s after the 'Court Line ' holiday company collapse. All holidays booked subsequently had a small cost added to them to build up a huge contingency fund to help holiday makers in this predicament ?? Does the fund still exist?? Who looks after it???

WorldVentures will be next. In 2017 they were unable to pay their reps and vendors millions of dollars. People also got stranded. They paid the cost of their vacation to WorldVentures, but WV didn't pay the vendors, so when the people got there, they found out they had no rooms. WorldVentures cost their own employees their cars, homes and for some their families due to the greed of the C level executives who were still buying themselves Maserati's and 911s at the same time they said they were unable to pay their employees and vendors.

Was bound to happen once we travellers could cut out the middle man, buying direct from the airlines makes it less expensive.

I don't understand this. Government spends 3/4 Billion to "bail out" stranded travelers? How is it the taxpayer's responsibility to "rescue" passengers if a travel company goes under due to mismanagement? That's what travel insurance is for!
