Great vid chaps. Considering how much sailing you all do, surprised to see most of the family suffering from sea sickness. Hope you all had a slap up dinner to make up for it

Hey guys! Awesome video thank youu! I’ve just done two weeks of sailing (1st to 15th of August) with my family. We are french and left from Granville, crossed the channel to Yarmouth, went west to Salcombe and then crossed again to Paimpol! Maybe our paths crossed :)) We got lucky with the quarantine situation. The south coast was so beautiful! We took the needles passage as well! We did some fishing between Pool and Weymouth and caught a Bar (don’t know the English name) and four mackerels! It’s true that ports were very busy but we managed to stay in all the ones we wanted (although some places were a bit tight :)) You definitely need to come to Brittany! Go to Ploumana’ch and Brehat if you have the chance! Fair winds can’t wait for the next episodes :))

I always use UTC onboard no faffing about with adding hours. Just remember to make sure you don't forget to adjust your watch when you step ashore or you might miss the pub. That preventer looks attached to the center cleat, you might want to look at that. I always understood that was a no, no as the forces on an accidental gybe might rip the cleat out of the deck due to the angle, always lead your preventer to the bow cleats.
@CactusSailing

Don’t want to miss the pub! And yes on the preventer - good spot!, i realised my error when I did it but Sod’s law I didn’t film it once I changed it :) Also what I learnt from this trip was to pre rig both preventers to make life easier when you do want to gybe.

@@sailingaphrodite4189 still got my sights set on northern France and the Channel Islands, but failing that and if lockdowns continues we will head to the Isles of Scilly I think so more than likely will stop off in Plymouth!

@@CactusSailing I love Alderney and Sark, but understand that currently the Coast Guard radio you as you approach their three mile limit and ask your intentions. Gunboats may arrive if you get any closer! If the UK/FR quarantine regulations still exist, I suspect they will, then that will stop all sailing trips to France to collect our duty free goods.

What was the tide diagram book you were using please.
@CactusSailing

It’s the “tidal atlas for the English Channel”, it’s published by admiralty and has the reference np250, you can find them on Amazon or eBay :)

Thanks for a nice video. Do you think you were too far out around St Albans head and in the overfalls rather than avoiding them?
@CactusSailing

I think we were too close to st Albans ledge, it’s not as bad further off shore, although this was close to slack water so should have been fine!

Why are you so afraid of dropping the hook? Is that an equipment thing, or something else?
@CactusSailing
@CactusSailing 3 жыл бұрын
i wouldnt say afraid, im more cautious on the hook for sure, but with only small batteries onboard and little solar panels or wind gen, life with two kids on board is easier plugged in with somewhere they can go off the boat. on that occasion it was also my lack of provisioning and needing to be near a shop to restock, and our little dinghy isnt quite up to the return journey across Poole harbour

Great video. Want to see you guys staying safe, especially as you have kids on board. Just an observation. Good to see that you had a ‘preventer’ on during your downwind sail, however for a preventer to really work it has to be as close to perpendicular to the boom as possible otherwise it has a high likelihood of failure and boom strike or standing rigging failure and de-masting. The closest you can get to perpendicular is from the end of the boom,(which have done,)but to the furthest point forward of the boat not midships. This was enforced within the professional arena after several fatalities due to preventer failure in New Zealand and around the world. Subsequent marine investigations employing scientific testing and the application of physics highlighted the dangerous pitfalls of taking a preventer to the midships cleat. Might be something to consider in the future. Stay safe.

Simply Sailing yeah your correct should be to the forward cleat, we only moved it to mess with the spinnaker (and failed to get it flying as we were not quite on a run) but should have put it back in any case. Later on I was wing on wing sailing with the preventor correctly rigged but typically I didn’t film that bit ;)

Hi, thanks for your comment. Watching it back again ourselves, we do agree that the it’s quite heavy during the intro and can only say that, it is not reflective of the majority of our vids. We had recently discovered patron and were maybe slightly too excited about the idea. We do need subscribers to be able keep producing so please bare with us and watch some of our later stuff, as there’s 50 odd other videos where we don’t mention it.
