What’s really important to discriminate is the difference between Life Expectancy ( 79 for males and 83 for females) and HEALTHY life expectancy . According to the ONS you can deduct 18 years for men and 20.2 for females ( ONS) . What people should be focusing on is improving their health much more than piling up a huge pension pot that they will not be able to use because they are dribbling in a wheelchair . You will not be spending £ 40,000 + per year once you are an unhealthy 73 year old . Therefore it’s not having a pot to last for 20 years but more like 10 . The median age for a diagnosis of cancer is 66 with a 50% chance of contracting it.

@EdmundBaileyUK

Thanks Gordon it isn't that simple as the New State Pension was brought in from April 2016 to simplify the UK state pension. The old basic state pension required fewer qualifying years, there was also additional state pension that was added to it and under certain rules some of it could be passed on on death.

The state pension based on 40 hours works our at £4.50 per hour yet the living wage is just under £10.00 per hour .yet people complain about being on £600.00 That they are struggling and going to food banks just think how hard it is for pensioners living on £4.50 per hour Monday to Friday Saturday and Sunday don't count.

At the age of 71 I am still working and paying tax and now will have to pay NI again. Seems the more you pay the less you receive.

If inflation is 7.5% in September '22 then the state pension is forecast to rise in line; but here's a thought, people such as I who are disabled and on the flat rate pension may be in receipt of Pension Credit; if the money the DWP says that I need to live on doesn't increase commensurate with inflation then PC will be reduced. So how much better off will we be?

Thanks Martin! Possibly if specifically referring to the State Pension as inevitably there will be some that will effectively never benefit from the State Pension despite having paid for someone else’s state pension whilst working but that’s the fundamental nature of the way the scheme works. On the flip side some will live very long lives and get more than they contributed in. It’s an interesting one.

As for the Government paying pensioners 7.5% well that's unlikely to happen. They will doubtless suspend the triple lock again. But Pensioners surviving on under £10k this winter who do not have any other source of income is not going to fly. It is estimated that annual average combined gas and electricity bill will rise from £1,971 in the summer to £3,582 in October. This is then expected to rise to more than £4,000 by January. That is close to 50% of the £9627 new state pension! So £9627 minus £3582 leaves £6045. That's £116 per week or £16 per day to live off; to cover food, water rates, council tax, TV licence (stopped free licence for over 75's in 2020). Is the Government really going to allow this to happen?

I would contact NHS Pensions. Public Sector pension schemes are quirky. It depends why you have left. In Local Government Scheme if you opt out you close your record and can never re-open it or combine it into your new records (refund accounts excluded). So if you were final salary - you cannot use your actual post-opt out final salary when you retire. NHS might have similar rules. If you left because an employment ended and you have re-started matters are different.

Your state pension figures stated may well be approximate cpi % figures for 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 but all pension journalists and pension advisors and especially the UK Government and the DWP always want to keep very quiet about is! If you have already retired and are in receipt of the state pension and a Local Government final salary pension then the arrangement made by the UK Government and the Scottish Government is to Deduct in Scotland 19% tax automatically from your workplace pension at 19% on the first £2162 above the UK Tax threshold of £12,570 and everything you earn annually Gross HMRC call this your Total Gross Annual Income and to get round actually saying you do not pay any tax on your State Pension HMRC simply deducts ALL THE TAX OFF OF YOUR WORKPLACE PENSION but here is the part lie or call it being liberal with the real truth the UK Government adds together your Gross Annual State Pension amount together with your Workplace Annual amount and then all pensioners who are in receipt of a low state pension and a low workplace pension are taxed at 19% by the Scottish Government PLUS 20% by the UK Government then add both total taxation together and Pensioners will have approximately £1200-£1400 minimum tax deducted from their pensions. Why is this tax deductions never ever spoken about during the chancellor's budget speeches or by Pension journalists up and down the country. The scandal here is if the UK Government deducted this amount of tax from your State Pension this would leave 44% of UK Pensioners who are in receipt of the Full New 100% UK State Pension from April with approx £1200 to £1400 less. This will be far far worse for the remaining 55% of UK Pensioners who have been opted out of the UK Government State Earnings Related Pension Scheme by their Local Council employers if they had been deducting a lower rate of N.I.C.'s automatically from your weekly/monthly payroll many of whom had never ever! Been told verbally or in writing by their employers that they would never ever! receive a full weekly 100% UK State Pension when they were due to retire at at 60 women or age 65 for men on their 65th birthday. Today hundreds of thousands of pensioners who had been opted out of serps will now be receiving approx £30 to £38 a WEEK less than the £185.15 in April 2022 state pension. If the UK Government and the Local Authorities had been open and totally transparent and advised their employees they will NEVER EVER! receive a full weekly state pension because of their council deciding to opt out of serps then the employee should have been given the opportunity to INCREASE THE AMOUNT THEY PAID FOR THEIR WEEKLY N.I.C.'S so they will receive a full weekly state pension and have 35 full qualifying years when they retired. This never happened because the UK Government totally FAILED to provide this VITAL PIECE OF INFORMATION to Local Authority Pension Administrators for example "Aberdeen City Council" who claim they never ever received any guidence or information about how much state pension their employees will actually receive when they were due to retire because the council had opted out of serps but both parties failed to be truthful and transparent. I believe both the UK Government and Local Authorities knew 20 to 30 years ago that they were going to CHEAT THOUSANDS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT PENSIONERS OUT OF EVER RECEIVING A FULL WEEKLY STATE PENSION AMOUNT UPON RETIREMENT. I would like to see more journalists print new more accurate pension NET OF TAX FIGURES because at the end of the day pensioners only have their NET Pension amount to pay for all of these very high price increases and not £185.15 it is more like £142 a week LESS TAX.

Over the last ten years, my state pension has risen overall by 32% (inc this April's rise). My costs from then up to this year have increased by 3.51%. So my inflation can go to 28.5% over the next year, and I will be no worse off that I was back then. Think I can relax. BTW, I delayed my pension for a year, and therefore get 10.8% more, every year, including increases. Kerching! Can't get a deal like that anymore...

They reduced the deferral bonus to 5.8% so I assume you reached pensionable age before 2016? For those of us who didn't, and are likely to have a pensionable age of above 65, it isn't very lucrative. If someone who would normally retire at 67 deferred for 5 years, it would take 17.2 years to receive the amount they had missed for 5 years. So, they'd be 84 before being "in profit". When not as mobile and spending less statistically. They would be better off taking it, and if not needed, investing it in a private pension.
