During the 1970s, Charles dated lots of women, including 24 women from aristocratic families trying to find a bride that met the royal family marriage criteria. He was expected to marry by age 30. He was under a lot of pressure to get married. In 1980, he proposed to Anna Wallace and Amanda Knatchbull. Both turned him down. Anna was interested in another man. Amanda said she wasn't ready to get married. She was 17 and more emotionally mature than Diana. He failed to find a suitable bride. ~~~~~ The queen mother and Diana's grandmother arranged for both to be invited to an event in Sussex. Diana knew Charles would be there, and she approached him. He was grieving the death of Lord Mountbatten, his mentor and friend. He was also vulnerable after being turned down twice. ~~~~~~ Their 3rd meeting was at Balmoral. Diana was invited to Balmoral for a weekend so the queen could evaluate Diana and determine if she would fit in with the family and the royal family business. Marriage to a royal is also a job in the royal family business. Diana's family coached her so she could pass the Balmoral test (job interview). Diana pretended to like Balmoral and the family activities. She pretended to be easygoing and cooperative. Basically, Diana lied to get the queen's approval. As a child, Diana believed she was destined to marry into the royal family. Diana had a crush on Charles from when she was 14. Her boarding school classmates said Diana had pictures of Charles pinned on her bedroom walls. Diana read romance novels where the main character marries Prince Charming and lives happily ever after. I believe Diana was in love with her fantasy of Charles and her childhood dream of being a member of the royal family. They didn't really know each other before the wedding. ~~~~ About a week after the weekend at Balmoral, the queen and prince Philip started pressuring Charles to propose to Diana. They met 10 more times before Charles proposed. I think Charles was surprised when she said yes. If you read about their courtship, proposal, and engagement, it was very clear he didn't love Diana. He didn't change his bachelor lifestyle until the day before the wedding, and Diana knew it. Charles ended all of his intimate relationships with all the women he was seeing, including Camilla just before the wedding. The marriage was a mistake. The honeymoon was a disaster. Charles planned a 3 month relaxing honeymoon vacation to get to know each other. 2 weeks on the royal yacht and over 2 months at Balmoral. Diana had unrealistic expectations and was disappointed and angry. She didn't like Balmoral. She didn't like anything about the honeymoon. She was binge eating and purging multiple times a day and crying. She was combative and had a destructive outburst, and Charles was alarmed. He found a therapist for her before the honeymoon was over. Diana refused therapy. Charles retreated to reading his books. Charles had a number of doctors see Diana trying to help her. Most diagnosed her with extreme depression and bulimia. In 1981, a doctor diagnosed Diana with borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD is thought to be caused by childhood trauma. Diana was traumatized by her parents' fighting and divorce. She was 6 years old when her mother left. Diana was emotionally neglected and became extremely emotionally needy. Charles was never prepared to provide the level of attention Diana wanted. She would threaten to harm herself to get attention. She attempted suicide when she was pregnant with William. I believe Charles was sympathetic at first but became irritated and disgusted by Diana's bulimia and other self-destructive behaviors. Especially since she refused professional help. Their relationship became increasingly toxic, and both were miserable by 1985. Diana was lonely and spent a lot of time alone with her bodyguard. Diana was in love and involved with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee in 1985-1986. When Charles became informed of Diana's relationship with her bodyguard, he ended his intimate relationship with Diana. They informally separated in 1986. The toxicity continued until the divorce in 1996. ~~~~ I read that people with BPD are emotionally stuck at age if their trauma. Diana was emotionally immature and often acted like a young child seeking attention. She created a very positive public image of herself. She was very different in her private life and had difficulty sustaining relationships. At the time of her death she wasn't speaking to her mother, her brother, her sister Jane, and Sarah Ferguson. Prince Philip stopped speaking to Diana after her 1995 BBC Panorama interview.

No, this is quite accurate. Of course the world has painted Charles as an unfeeling jerk but that’s not true…he fully understood the importance of his role as POf W and Heir and went into the marriage, if not totally in love but with the desire to do his best…remember many of his family married for dynastic reasons and had good relationships…was it the right thing in more modern times, probably not but the expectation that a 32 year old man had to marry an innocent inexperienced woman was ridiculous too. Diana was a flawed young woman who was looking for her Prince and a Fairy tale, sadly it was a tragedy for them both.

Yes, she had unrealistic expectations initially but later did a wonderful job of being a good role model. Prince Charles was pressured to marry her. He wasn't in love with Diana and she knew it. They both wanted to call off the wedding but couldn't. Diana did her best considering her circumstances. Prince Charles did try. People shouldn't bash him as they do. He isn't a bad man. @cod2shorts734 Karla constantly paints the "problem" to be Diana and her "mental illness." This is not the first of her long, well-crafted narratives about Diana being a problem for Charles. Karla is not a psychiatrist. However, she diagnoses Diana with borderline personality disorder. Psychiatrists never go public with a person's mental illness ever because it's part of their Hyppocratic Oath not to. I would love to see someone diagnose Charles. Diana was not overly demanding to Charles like people say. She just needed love and honesty, and she didn't get that from him. He was the very needy one who was obsessed with his emotional neediness for Camilla. He did not let go of Camilla when he took his marriage vows. He would not be the first to have to make hard choices. His uncle David did. Queen Elizabeth threatened her parents with abdication if she couldn't marry Philip, and they relented. It wouldn't have been so terrible if he chose love over the Crown. It happens. However, he chose both and heavily damaged a young woman who came from a shattered home. Diana was very confused by Charles's behavior. They only met 15-16 times before marriage. He lovebombed Diana. You see the videos of him holding her hand, bringing it up to kiss it. How would most 19 year olds not be enthralled by that? Twenty when she married and Charles was 32 and old enough to know better. You just don't have your off and on lover of 10 years help you pick out your spouse. That's extremely disrespectful. Did you know Camilla called Diana Mouse behind her back? The real problem with Diana is that she was not what C & C thought she would be - - a passive little mouse who would go along and stay quiet and docile. That is what Diana's problem was. It wasn't that Diana was crazy and that's what made Charles recoil from her. It was that it dawned on Diana during the honeymoon that she had been taken on a false journey and had been had. I'd be furious, too! The main issue I have is Diana's detractors (and Karla wasn't as bad as she usually is) is that they invariably slut-shame Diana as if the downfall of the marriage was all her fault because she was "crazy and a slut". The main issue was Charles and Camilla arranging the marriage to begin with. Watch Dr Gabor Maté talking about "Harry's problems," and maybe you can understand the damage that was caused by C & C deceitfulness and underhandedness. Now, Harry is very brutally disparaged because he has chosen to talk about his childhood and the trauma he experienced. It would go a long, long way to heal this broken family if Charles sat his son's down and apologized for the huge mistake he made to begin with. Imo, Charles should have chosen to stay a bachelor if he couldn't let Camilla go..... I'm done here, I'm not going to go back and forth about who did what because it's fruitless, we just don't agree.

Being too young is the fault of this relationship, if she was in her mid 20s she wouldn't have agreed to his proposal, just like his previous gfs. She was mesmerized at the idea of love and that too the prince charming of the nation. It was a fairytale come true for her. However, as she matured she realised what a mistake she had done. When she got out of the family, she knew that she was going to be queen mother to William and so didnt wanted to be the queen to charle.
