A big handshake 🤝 to all farmers but tobacco farmers hold a special place in my heart and mind.

Thank you God, thank you Burley, thank you Cornell & Diehl. Nothing better than their numbered flakes for my pipe.

I grew up on a family farm outside of Hopkinsville, KY. We did all of this. Except when we topped it we also pulled the suckers off. When we cut it, we didn't spike it at the same time. And we tied the hands of tobacco and stacked them on baskets for auction. Growing a crop of tobacco was a big job all year around.

I have very fond memories of the summer I spent in Kentucky, helpin my aunt & uncle on their farm. I got paid room & board for my labor. I was able to help out the neighboring farmers to make some spending money.

Wow! This video pretty much shows the whole process/season of working Burley tobacco from planting in late Spring with the setter to grading and tobacco warehouse sales in late Summer and early Fall. A couple of days after school closed for the summer in the McDowell County Appalachian foothills, and we moved up into the Mitchell County Appalachian mountains at 13, I started following a 2 seater tobacco setter behind my uncle’s David Brown(bought out or merged with Case)tractor, with a bucket of tobacco plants 🌱 resetting in the rows where the setter had either missed or the tobacco plant wasn’t properly planted by the setter. Only differences from back in the day, being the deworming and suckering combined with the topping of the tobacco(before farmers started spraying for both suckers and tobacco worms 🐛)as well as more grades with “tying hands” and packing on tobacco baskets after grading the tobacco. My late uncle had actually started switching to the sprays and the baling of the graded tobacco instead of the tying hands and tobacco baskets just as I was getting out of it and started pumping gas at a convenience store(back when some stores still did) and then moving on to working at a textile mill after community college.

Thumbnail caught my attention. They were setting, lol. Im such a country grrl! That was me at 8 and 9 years old, following the setters, waiting until I was old enough to cut, lol. At that time all I could do was pull, and follow setters, lay sticks and top. Once I could cut it was on, lol! Then load and hang. Oh I could help strip the last little leaves at 9 too. So silly but I felt like I was important, contributing to the family and the economy.

For all the talk about the death of 'baccerr it is good to see one telling a story closer to reality. PA & OH have some of the best tobacco crops also. Thank you.

In Kentucky we always called them "setters" but they are actually transplanters. You can find them sitting around in barns and at the occasional farm auction. www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/204809759/holland-transplanter-1304
