My first car was a Y reg 1.6 hatchback. As a SD1 fan I used to imagine that my Cav looked a little like a shrunk down SD1. It was great having a Cav as all my friends had slower stuff like 1.0 Metros, Minis and Beetles. I could wait until they were nearly past me overtaking, put my foot down and leave them standing. Not as mean as a mate who was driving his dad's company car, a brand new Sierra 2.0ltr twin cam (not 16 valve though?) He used to beat the Metros and Minis in REVERSE!

Your passenger door *should* have a wing mirror, and it would've also been controllable from inside the car. And it seems the boots were big by default. And just seeing the interior of the car in the vid brought a whole load of memories back. My first car was an A-reg 1.6L Cavalier, 4 door hatchback. It was brown in colour, which helped mask the rust holes in the front passenger door, and interior was a paler brown. I remember the engine too, as the previous owner managed to screw up one of the spark plug threads. I had to gently turn the sparkplug until I felt a small click then a larger click, and then the plug was on the correct thread. Then there was the carb on it. It was a generic Vauxhall Variojet thing, and its automatic choke function failed... as did subsequent replacement carbs, so I ended up getting a Nikki sports carb fitted to it. And that was both a good and bad thing. Good because the airfilter could be washed and replaced, so no more buying new airfilters for me. Bad because the carb, by design, drank petrol for fun. But the best bit was noise the carb made when you put your foot down, you could hear the air being sucked into it.

A back up vehicle...chickens lol. I bought my '84 B reg saloon in Gateshead in 2014, Went down from Glasgow one Sunday to see it. It hadn't been on the road for a while and wasn't MOT'd (already knew it), the deal was done on provision of it being MOT'd that week and ready to take home the next weekend. Monday night got the call to say it had passed MOT and would be ready, decided to take the train down with my mum, dad and niece, vendor said he would pick us up from station. Drove it home up to Scotch corner, across the A66 to Penrith, up the M6 onto the M74 and home to Glasgow. Never missed a beat and I never for a second doubted it would make it. Sadly on Good Friday 2018 just as I was getting it as I wanted it, including CB as 100% legal to use while driving, I was hit on a roundabout on the passenger side rear quarter. The impact caused the car to sway round and the front drivers corner to smash in to a crash barrier writing it off. Got insurance pay out, but they wanted the car, luckily my insurance had return of cherished salvage on it so I managed to keep it. Now I hope to have it back on the road again soon. Other projects kind of got in the way including keeping the X308 Daimler on the road, as well as an Avenger Top Hat. Also last year started a re-chassis of a Series 3 Landy and just as started that went off work on the sick with problems with my legs, been a year now. Wow sorry for such a long comment, hope you still have it as subscribed on hopes of seeing more of it.

Lovely car, I have a 1979 Cavalier GLS. Its very easy to fit seatbelts in the rear, as there are threaded inserts fitted at the factory for them. I'd put the petrol filter on the non pressurised side of the pump though.
@UKBarnFinds Жыл бұрын
I did notice the seatbelt inserts and wondered if it would be worth fitting them. The fuel tank needs to come off and be flushed. The new filter had loads of sediment in it in under 50 miles. There must be loads of it in there!

These are great cars, mine is also a Cavalier L although it’s the mid spec (1st facelift model) I would happily drive mine to the other end of the country and back, they do keep up with modern traffic surprisingly well the breaks I think are very good although modern cars do require less effort, I’ve heard a couple of arguments that the remote brake master cylinder (like yours) has slightly better braking than the ones with the master on the driver’s side, but someone else doesn’t agree with that 😂 I remember seeing this up for sale on eBay a few years ago I was quite tempted, you’ve got a good buy there and it’s definitely worth keeping in my opinion, but then I am biased 😊 the stuttering is probably the Varajet carb, this is something mine also does but never cause for alarm in any way, I have tried to tune it out but to no avail (I’m no expert just tinkering) I’ve got the emissions down to way within spec so I’m happy with that, but it’s not going to stop me trying to get it bang on though. What’s the mileage of this one? I expect it’s quite low judging from the condition of everything. Hope you enjoy the Cavalier for a good long time! Cheers.

Nice example there I'm sure it's been resprayed at some point ? Head light lens unclips from the unit so that will make cleaning it easy ,if you take the seal out put a small bead of silicone in the unit let It set over night then put the seal back in this will give it a tighter fit and if you need to take the lense off again you can without it sticking to silicone. Clearly its had running issues because of the fuel pump looking new but it looks to me like its a 1.3 pump as the 1.6 pump is smaller. I do hope you keep it its a very nice car , I loved mine back in the day. Call her eiRWEen

Brilliant comment. Thank you. I've just got to get our Talbot off the ramp, then the Cavalier is going up in the air. That new fuel filter we put on had loads of sediment in it before it had even done 50 miles after we shot this video, so the tank is obviously full of muck and needs to come off. The fuel lines and the pump look new - I reckon they did that for its TV appearance (it was on Channel 5 very recently, wrapped in black!), but the real issue was all the muck in the tank. I'll sort that headlamp at the same time. I'm thankful they're clip-on ones. Thanks again - Elton

Thank you. I still can't get my head around the fact that there must have been an even more basic model 😂

As there is a call for “dumb” phones as opposed to smart phones, I’m sure there could be a lot of interest in a super simple car like this. I mean there’s not a lot to go wrong on this car, and if it did, how little would it cost to repair!?
@UKBarnFinds Жыл бұрын
You’re right, to a certain extent. The only problem with cars like this (and we own quite a few, so speak from painful experience 😂) is getting parts now. It can be time consuming and costly. What we need is a modern dumb car!
@1vantheterr1ble47 Жыл бұрын
That’s what I’m trying to say - a modern dumb car . . .

Believe it or not the L model wasn't the bottom of the range - there was actually a Base model! I had one of those and envied my colleague in his smart L, but even my poverty spec model came with a radio. I loved those cars, which (in 1600 guise at least - I can't speak for the 1300) seemed pretty quick for the time.
@UKBarnFinds Жыл бұрын
It’s so hard to imagine an even ‘more base’ model, but I do love the thought of it. There’s just something about the lower spec cars that really appeals to me.

Lovely car. Is the Citan the one with the Renault engine and gearbox, they are known for being less than reliable. There is a company near High Wycombe that can fit rear belts for you called 'Quickfit SBS' they fit belts to all sorts of classic cars. Worth doing if you want to take the kids out in it.
@UKBarnFinds Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I've just had a quick look and bookmarked their website 👍 Yeah, the Citan is a Kangoo with a different badge, I believe. When I replaced the wing mirror a couple of weeks ago, the plastic cover inside had 'Renault' stamped on the back. To be fair, the car has done a fair few miles and it was the master cyclinder that packed up. Fingers crossed, she'll be okay for a little while now.

Must be nice to have a sidekick (not sure which one of you will claim to be that) - my other half won’t even sit in my car on the principle of what it represents! 😂

It's either a blessing, or a curse. We're both still trying to work that one out 😂 It was great to see Claire's sense of adventure come out to play with this one. Getting the car trailered here would have been a lot easier, but a 'collection video' was all her idea. She's really enjoying the KZbin stuff, too, although it's been hard work. She does every single piece of editing and is having to learn as we go along. I'm a lucky guy, as she's great as a partner and mum to the kids, too - Elton

@@UKBarnFinds I think the dynamic between you works well - you could make more of it I reckon, even without the false jeopardy (a point on which I agree with you entirely btw)

@@SportsandGT - I think a lot of people would agree with us on that 'false jeopardy' point. It really does grind my gears. I'm sure more of the dynamic between Claire and I will come across in future 'vlog-style' uploads. It's a struggle on some of the videos, though, as we'll be filming alone, but there are still ways and means. Feedback like this really does help steer us in the right direction(s).

Now I’ve seen it to the end…. I expected to see a broken down Vauxhall….but what we get is modern Mercedes breaks down, 1982 Vauxhall to the rescue. The saloon variant was a lot more rare than the hatchback. Did you know they made a very poverty version fitted with the 1.3 Astra engine….painful.

21:23 Meh, I've driven cars with no clutch before. No that difficult. I had a 4-door, Y reg.GLS back in the early '90s. It had steel sunroof, electric boot release (!), electric mirrors, alloys, rev counter (!), I drove a newly-bought 1970 Triumph Stag from Hull back to Norfolk at about midnight. That A15 seemed very remote. I was watching the temp gauge like a hawk !

I've driven cars with no clutch before. Still have vivid memories of a Chevette that went on a garage forecourt. This one, though, just wouldn't ram in and that's what we pay all that breakdown cover money for. Mind you, I wasn't overly impressed with our cover and this comment has just reminded me that I need to look into this - our van cover, apparently, only covers us for a 25-mile recovery. I had to pay for the 'excess' mileage! That GLS sounds well loaded! Quite a different spec to this one 😂
@lewis72 Жыл бұрын
@@UKBarnFinds The GLS was, at the time, the top of the range, along with the SR, as it was just before the 1.8i engine was launched and the following CDi & SRi. The Mk2 CDi Cavalier was a really nice & well-equipped car.

I've said it before on here and our other social media channels. it's the memories that our cars invoke that makes owning and sharing them like this so fulfilling for me. Absolutely. The MK3 might have been more comparable in styling, but was late to the party compared to the Sierra. The MK2 Cavalier, to me, looks like how I'd expect a kid to draw a car. I'd love to get hold of a decent MK1. Maybe it's just me, but I think they're the prettiest.
