Its possible you had old petrol in the pipe, pump and carburettor bowl, so you had to pump through the fresh petrol. Obviously with any old car you have the brown gummy sediment in the fuel system. Future cars I would suggest removing the petrol pipe from the tank, clean that out with wd or atf ,same with the pump and filter and carburettor adding fresh petrol as you box up. These cars , A30/35 have a habit of fuel tank rustingand eventually leaking. In 1969 I bought a 1964 A35 Van 1100 cc that had come from London Electricity Board and the tank started to leak soon after I started driving it. Lovely little cars, funny rear brakes and all brakes after be tightened up using a screwdriver through a hole in the drum on the slave cylinders. Well done on getting a start.

Well done you two, what a cheering video to hear your A30 start and run after all the trials and tribulations. If it was my Austin I would try to get the clutch working and the car driving before stripping anything down transmission or engine-wise, but advise a full brake check/overhaul at the outset. Good luck and thanks for bringing some winter sunshine to us viewers!

I wish I was there to help you there's a certain way to start up old motors that set for so long. It's not rocket science it's just called common Sense how to start a old motor. One time I even had an mg engine that had no oil pressure because it's set for so long the oil pump when dri show The cure was to keep the bearings in oil while cranking it over I just overfilled the crankcase when it got oil pressure I turned it off and drained most the oil out, but you always want to run an internet set for a long time with its original oil for a few minutes to get everything moving good.

Hi guys, greetings from Melbourne, Australia....a couple of tips for you for future reference. A mix of acetone and atf has been shown to be a far superior penetrant than products such as wd40 or atf or diesel alone. Mix it 50/50 by volume. It separates so you have to shake it up before use. Second thing, you mentioned about not knowing what to look for on the bore scope... basically any rust (in this cars scenario), deep scatches/scoring which would usually be vertical lines or pitting in the cylinder walls. Also any obvious cracks in the tops of pistons or holes. Both of which would be terminal. The mess on top of the piston you showed is just carbon and not a huge issue unless there was heaps of it. Ideally these checks should be done before attempting to unseize an engine as it tells you what you're facing. Soaking the bores was the right thing to do either way. Well done on saving a survivor. The A series are tough little engines.. As a general rule when dealing with a car like this I would tackle in this order: attempt to turn engine over by hand a full rotation to ensure it turns freely. Deal with seizing like you did. Check for compression and investigate if none. Lube the bores if the engine wasn't originally seized. Tackle the fuel system and ignition like you did. Spin the engine on the starter (no plugs) to get check/get oil pressure. Put the plugs in, add fuel and ignition and give her a crack! That little A30 has a nice quiet sounding engine so hopefully the oil burning will settle down and we'll see you on your nest adventure with her..

My first car was an A30 and, as a poor apprentice, I couldn't afford to have it maintained by a garage. So I had to read up and teach myself how to work on the engine. So I really know how you felt when it burst into life. My A30 was the recipient of a new timing chain and water pump as well as having the head skimmed and new valves and guides fitted. All done by myself, with the help of a Haynes manual. If I could do it at 19 (some 57 years ago) you are more than capable of it. The water pumps were a common leakage problem. Don't forget, the valve seats might not like E10 petrol, the engine was designed for leaded petrol. But if you do take the head off to work on it you could get new valves and also modify the seats so that she can run on unleaded. Ps; When I had my A30 petrol was 3 shillings and sixpence for a gallon: 17.5p !!!! Best of luck with the old girl, I will enjoy watching your progress.

For any younger viewers reading the comment above, that's less than 4-pence a litre (or liter, in some countries)! It sounds like a lot of people cut their teeth on these little Austins. We're enjoying learning them from scratch and it really helps to have comments like this, as genuine personal experience trumps any Google search. Thank you. If the head ever comes off, we'll look at the option of converting it to unleaded.

I’ve been following this with nostalgic interest. In 1970, at the age of 17, I bought my first car for £10. It was an Austin A30 😊. I think mine must have been a base model, as I don’t recollect there being a heater 😂 (I might be wrong). I then ‘upgraded’ to a 1953 Series 2 Morris Oxford for £45, then at the age of 20 a brand spanking new Mk 1 Ford Escort. Happy days. Last summer I saw an A30 at a car meet and was amazed at how small it was. The owner let me have a sit in it. I was instantly transported back. Well done on getting it going again, job well done

It was brilliant to see the A30 live again! My first car was an A35, way back in 1968. I was so glad to see this old girl start, as the stuck valves freed-off. I am ex-UK, but have lived in Australia for the last 36 years, and your video takes me back in time. You have a great partner who shares your passion, and not many are quite like that! Best wishes, and good luck with some restoration work on the A30, because it deserves to live a second life.
@nealeburgess67569 ай бұрын
Great result. Where to go from here? At this point don't strip the engine. Let it have a bit of running. Drive it around, let it thoroughly warm up and cool down numerous times. Change the oil again. Give the engine a chance to free itself off, things like the piston rings may be stuck, but also may unstick with use. With regards to the clutch: the plates maybe very stuck together. So don't just put it in first or reverse. They don't have syncromesh. Try putting it in a higher gear. If it doesn't want to go into gear don't force it. The next step requires working brakes! Push the car to an open bit of road or car park. Warm the engine. Turn engine off. Select first gear. (You may need to rock the car forwards or backwards to allow the gear to engage). Start the engine (brakes off) with the car in gear. It will drive off. Then try to get the clutch to disengage (push the clutch pedal down) while accelerating and decelerating. You might need to be a bit brutal with the gas. If that doesn't work try braking, with gas and clutch pedal down. I used this method on a barn find car with a similar engine (1972 Wolseley 18/85, 1.8 B series engine). It took a few tries driving around the site outside the workshop before it successfully freed itself. It then proceeded to work perfectly well with no further attention needed to the clutch. (Of course, if the clutch won't disengage you can put the car in neutral to stop, or simply turn off the engine). You can be thankful that the A30 (and A35) has a mechanical clutch release, not a hydraulic one. When I first started my 1936 Austin Seven Ruby (Barn find) the clutch was not stuck. Let's hope your little A30 is the same!

Yeah, generally agree but the Austins had an odd rod and cable brake set up, in a way easy to set up and clean etc, but not exactly the most efficient of systems - the big drums and shoes compensated !

Brilliant 👍👍 if it were me next step would be to check coolant waterways. Remove thermostat and clear gunk, remove hoses and put a hose through until it runs clear. Pump off and check or replace and replace thermostat and put back together. Do same with heater matrix if it has one and lastly radiator off car and flush through. New hoses and water to start with and run up to temp looking for leaks before draining and filling up with coolant. It may be more cost effective to get radiator recored if a problem there.

Next job should be to get an oil pressure gauge onto it and you'll have an idea as to the condition of the bottom end. Then run it and see if the smoke clears. Those A series engines don't give up easily so it could well be fine.
@markpirateuk9 ай бұрын
Great to see it running after all those years, hopefully the excessive smoke will clear once the rings free up, still worth taking the head off to clean & decoke. Also replace the valve stem oil seals after cleaning & re-lapping the valves, would be a good idea to do a compression test both before & after removing the head. The clutch can be freed up just by driving it around your yard, got a few freed up this way.

Now you know why the A30 35s have such a loyal following.. you're hook line and sinker into it now. Thanks so much for the nostalgia trip.. Im 61 and my 1st car was an A35 in 1979.. they just go and go and go. I managed to get almost 50mpg out of it as well on a road trip.. I had 8 school mates and a dog in mine and broke a stub axle haha.. so much fun. You def need to get the head off at some stage of course and have a good look at those valve stems and guides. They do really respond to an occassional honest day trip to cook off any carbon deposits. Picnic with the kids. Kids just love these Noddy Cars.. My guess is that it was a shopping basket and got well and truly coked up hence the sticking valves.. The "cotters" etc on this look later than the car, which is unsurprising . A "Gold Seal" engine was a BL/Unipart fully rebuilt top bottom and ancilliaries using new parts other than head and block which were machined to recieved oversize pistons. Of course you can just get a gold seal rocker box cover and spray an old engine gold, not something I would ever do. "Silver Seal" engines were rebuilt using existing components where they were not worn to excess / refurbed ancillaries only as needed.

I reckon those valve guide oil seals must be shot it. To be expected I suppose, given the years it's been standing. Lucky the engine wasn't seized up. Those engines are quite easy to work on. Taking the head off and changing the gaskets and oil seals will be quite a pleasant job to do and so rewarding once it's back up and running without kicking all that smoke out of the exhaust. Enjoyed watching that.

Served my time as a HGV mechanic but loved playing with A series engines could strip one in my sleep.
@samrodian9199 ай бұрын
Congratulations on getting her started! Yes if that were mine I would take the head off and strip it, clean the valve stems thoroughly, and lap the valves back in. While you were trying to start her, you had at least one or more inlet valves slightly ope, that's why you were getting puffs of vapour up out of the carb. It's lucky you didn't get the starting fluid ( usually called " start you bastard!) lol on fire as an open valve can cause a backfire in the inlet tract and back out of the top of the carb. And if you are firing ether at it when it backfires it can be a little hairy to say the least! After the head job she should run smoothly as long as you've dumped all the oil which is probably contaminated with diesel and ATF that will have gotten past the rings, and put fresh oil in. If you are going to put this together during the cold weather just make sure you fill the cooling system with antifreeze very soon or you are going to have possible core plugs pushed out in the block, or worse a cracked block or cylinder head.

Very well done. I was one of those who commented about sticking valves and rings but had missed t he last few seconds of your previous video. The big clue was that only a couple of valves moving. Great persistence in freeing them. But remember the no compression sound is a fast constant whiring instread of pulsing. You didnt need a compression tester to tell you there was effectively none. @briancourt42809 ай бұрын
Really enjoy your videos just want to say squirting WD or ATF on the top of the valves won't do anything because the valves have stem seals on them to stop the engine oil running down the valve stem and burning. To free the valves just use a small steel hammer,not a mallet (you need to get some vibration into the valve stem) and gently keep tapping the valve whilst leavering the spring up with a good sturdy screwdriver . As for the jammed rope, just needed to turn the engine back the other way. Keep the great videos coming.

well done for getting it started, I had to smile a few times at the obvious things i could see, but only simple if you have had these problems yourself. I would remove the head, If you can get a new gasket? re seat the valves and check the push rods, with that amount of pressure they could have bent a little. its not a difficult job and easy to get at, not like todays car engines. I would bet the centre plate on the clutch as ceased, and the brakes will almost certainly be ceased, I would think that will be more fiddly than the head coming off. The shoes will have to be adjusted, on each wheel, no self adjusters on these beauties. Well done U 2.

When you don't have to drive it to work on Monday you can persevere! I don't know what it is about A series 4 bangers but they can start no matter how bad the motor is. I hope you get it driving sooner rather than later! Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful that you got it running. The best penetrating oil is a mixture of 50/50 ATF and Acetone

Absolutely willing her to start and good work guys. You can’t beat that feeling. Makes me want to get another one now after 30 odd years. Best raid the piggy bank, or sell a kidney or some other body part.

Greetings from NZ. Easy way with stuck valves on these A series engines is to remove the rocker gear then you can hit the valve direct on the stem with some force, you wont hurt it and pry it up and repeat. Lot easier without the rocker gear in the way. But you got there and got it going great job, now subscribed.

I'd be inclined to leave the engine at the moment, maybe see iif the rest can be got going, with regards to the stuck clutch a youtube channel called Marts garage has just had an episode where he freed the clutch on a Ford 100E may give some ideas as to what you can do (we do similar things to free clutches on agri machinery when it's been sitting around a long time).

You’re not going about it right. With a valve stuck in the down position, when the piston comes up it’ll hit the valve. If you have bent valves, it won’t move. It’s not a big engine so remove it and take it apart. It will need a rebuild for sure

I’ve had success with draining the water off and refilling with as much hot as possible . Changing to hot water a couple of times has even freed off a clutch,🙈

Happy she fired up. Keep going with the heat cycle should help free any gummed up rings hopefully the smoke will clear the amount of oil it's had down it she is going to take some clearing.but keep at it . To rebuild the engine is not the end of the world but keep going and get it driving down the road

Do whatever you can to get this car running. This car is worth restoring. Whatever happens, I hope it keeps its external looks. It would be a shame to change that.

You've probably done it now but the rocker cover edge your worried about put a length of wood or brass if you got any on it then use a longer lever under the valve spring ,it should move easier with no risk of damage to that edge.good luck.

What is it about resurrecting a stuck engine that fires up the emotions? I was screaming with you when you got that going, with tears running down my face. You're a couple of gems and I love you both.

I am interested in the Allgero, and ideally a small milkfloat (the adversting canopy on yours makes it too tall for the unit I have access to)

As they say up here, Bostin'! Time to drive it then change all the perishables such as hoses etc, make it reliable and dependable.

Good job. Get the cooling system fixed and replace rings before anything else.

Leave the head on for now. Take the time to start it every couple of days and not let it seize up again. It should stay working.

When you done all your stuff to the engine, change the oil again so the oil is fresh and not filled with all those shit you put on the valves.

Go for it. Make sure there is no serious rot in chassis. Once complete would be worth a fortune. LOL

Well done! Yeah probably a good idea not to run it for too long until you can check it's pumping coolant around.

PLUS GAS PENETRATES WELL. ONE CAN REMOVE THE ROCKERS THEN SPRAY AGAIN AND LEAVE IT OVERNIGHT THEN ONE CAN GRIP THE TOP OF THE VALVE STEM WITH MOLE GRIPS AND TWIST LIFT.
