Detailed instructions for tying Tom Ukena's Brown Bug.
Recipe:
Hook: Barbless jig hook (here, a Lightning Strike JF2), sizes 8-18.
Bead: Gold tungsten slotted bead, 7/64-inch.
Thread: Rusty brown, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .020.
Tails: Medium Pardo Coq de Leon fibers.
Rib: Red Ultra Wire, small.
Body: Tying thread.
Head: Tying thread, colored with black permanent marker.

I’ve been watching your videos for many, many years and believe I’ve viewed them all. But this one is my current favorite. Why? It contains your usual detailed tying instructions with many of your personal touches. But it has an enormous amount of side information. This includes: 1. How you became aware of the pattern, 2. Background on the pattern originator, 3. Fishing experience with the pattern in diverse waters, 4. Sizing and weighting options, 5. Combination suggestions with other patterns, 6. Tippet considerations, and finally 7. Introduction of a new version of Sally Hansen nail polish to use for the resin sensitive. Putting this all in one video required a lot of thought and effort. To expect you or other video makers to do this every time is unrealistic. But this video is now the “gold standard” on how things can be done.

Can I be honest and say when I saw what you were tying, I was a little dismissive of the video before I played it. But, this may be the best fly tying video I’ve ever watched. Super clear instructions, excellent visuals, and rational for each step would have been enough to make me feel sheepish for judging the video before watching it, but then when you went the extra mile and described how to fish it I was blown away. Thanks for what you do!

It’s a great reminder. Seem like so many recipes have 17 steps and 9 different materials. Yeah they look cool and they catch fish too. But it doesn’t get much simpler than this. Or a Shop Vac. Or a Walt’s. ETC…. Sometimes I guess we outthink ourselves. Going to give these a try. Pretty sure they’ll work like a charm. Thanks as always Tim.

Hey Tim, I would just like to thank you for your dedication and commitment to teaching and sharing what you have learned. I absolutely love learning from your video and your experiences. I really wanted to try this pattern out. But I didn't have all the materials. So I tied it in a size 18 with tan thread and Pheasant tail fibers. 🤞fingers crossed it will work ok until I get what I need to make it right. I'm new to tying and I really enjoy your videos. I like how you clearly describe every step and I can understand it easily.

Thank you for tying this for us. Going to spin up a dozen tomorrow. This works well on the provo when most thing wont. Question, are you allergic to the UV glue? I've developed a severe allergy to it. Even the smallest amount of the fumes it produces when cured will cause me some issues. And touching it to my skin makes my whole face swell up. I thought it was one of the furs i was using, but a week of tying with feathers only caused me to end up in the hospital from the UV Glue..

I had to give up UV resin as well. Kept trying it, thinking "It will be fine this time." But no, it is not. Kind of like eating Arby's.

I’ve been using a similar fly like this for nearly 8 years and it has been my number 1 producer. Black has been the only color I use anymore on wild trout streams. Try this variation if you’re in the northeast. Hook : Hanak Jig Standard #16 similar. (Not the wide gap) Bead: Hareline 1/8” Silver or Copper. Tail: Dark Mottled CDL/or Black - half body length (shorter is better, not like those ghastly Orvis perdigons with the crazy long tails 😖) Body: 8/0 Black UTC, or Danville 6/0 tapered smoothly up to to bead. Collar - Veevus Chartreuse 12/0. Secure thread behind bead and 4-5 whip finishes should do it. Rib - Not needed. U.V. - Use a thin cure resin and put a light coat on body and collar/hotspot. Fish it under a large parachute Ant, hopper, etc, and hold on.

Tim - Thank you for sharing this pattern. You have inspired me to tie a bunch of these in different sizes. Sorry that you are allergic to UV resin. Is that the reason you tie it with a black thread collar and not use a black wing case? If you were able to use UV black resin for a wing case, do you think it makes any difference which side of the bead it is on?

There are a few Fly Tyers that are allergic to it."Shorty" is another one. He also has a Fly Tying KZbin Channel. He developed a serious rash on his arms.

I think Tim has had some allergic reactions to the fumes of the UV cure resins. Continued exposure can make reactions worse.
