The published data only tells part the story though. A lot of high crime areas have a lot of unreported crimes, some areas have a lot of shoplifting in the stats, etc,

Thank you you made such a good point, “ nothing has changed “ And that it tragic for the families who live there ! I lived in what was recorded as the worst area in the U.K. for 4 years - it’s been trampled to the ground now - but the community despite the poverty somehow struggled through and still managed to look out for each other - the councils make decisions to invest or not invest in areas- The Angel Islington where I was born was the biggest 💩 hole ever when I was a child, my mother had 8 flights of stairs to navigate up to our damp 2 bed flat to the to the outside loo and only hot water tap in the house 1 bathroom. The council invested by building a prison camp on St Paul’s Road , piled everyone there on top of each other , whist selling off the stock of the houses that simply needed renovation- now you couldn’t rent a room in that area under 700 a week? Houses worth millions- the decision makers either have very little insight or are part of a very lucrative back hand gravy train!

I've lived in Ely (not Eli) all my life and it's nothing like how it's perceived here. It has it's moments but what area doesn't? Ely is actually a pretty quiet area for the most part and has a great community spirit. The house prices you listed are just wishful thinking, a small 2 bed house in Ely is around £160k onwards, not £100k and you definitely arent getting anything for £40k. Alot of misinformation in this video just on Ely alone. Just something to point out with the bulky furniture outside, usually its like that because its council collection day and they require it to be outside to be collected. Most often than not you don't see bulky furniture in the streets like that.
@joeyharris27693 ай бұрын
When did you record this video? If the video was taken around July, it’s likely to show beds and garbage in the streets. This is because Cathays is a predominantly student area where students move out during the summer and houses get refitted during this time. (Something the council needs to address with the ever increasing landlords). This also adds to the persistent issue of rubbish and rats on the streets, it is clear that the council needs to address this ongoing problem. The council has consistently failed to manage this issue effectively. Many people from outside believe this is a social problem but areas like Cathays are student areas-the students leave so it becomes almost a ghost town. The council can mitigate this easily, either by increasing resources or implementing better waste management strategies. As someone born and raised in this area, it hurts to hear people speak negatively about my birthplace. But if you ask anyone People of Cardiff are the most friendliest in the UK.
@lemsip2073 ай бұрын
People don't want to live in Cathays and Roath near students because of the noise they make, though the streets nearer to Wellfield Road and Roath Park tend to be more where families and couples live. A lot of people moved away as they could sell their home to a landlord for much more than they bought it for and buy a slightly bigger house in North Cardiff where there is more space. There are a lot of ex students living in Cathays too and people who grew up in the area. I was surprised it was the worst area of Cardiff to live. I thought that would be Ely. The buses to Cowbridge had to be rerouted so they wouldn't go along Cowbridge Road West which goes through both Ely and Caerau. One one side is Ely and on the other side is Caerau.

I lived in Cardiff in 1980/1981 on Cowbridge Road East, Canton. Back then I thought Canton was a bit "rough" around the gills although was informed by others that the areas around the old docks were worse (since gentrfield/redeveloped). I was an education student at the University and did my teacher training at Bettws in Newport (also a somewhat unusual area). I also taught for a week in St. Mellons Primary. Back then it was a leafy, pretty suburb and for some reason today has turned into a den of iniquity. I can hardly believe it! During my year the only problem I had was on Newport Rd. in an area called Splott(lands) when I was grabbed around the throat but managed to escape and run down into the centre of Cardiff. I did not know at the time that it was a dangerous area and attended a "ban the nuclear bomb" event there. And the Cathays area around the University both on Senghenydd Road and in the Cathays Gardens area in front of the university and other large buildings did not seem bad at all. Over the years something dramatic seems to have happened to the city.

The council under labour have done nothing for the area, all youth amenities have been closed down a long time ago. There is a problem with littering, fly tipping etc which has definitely got worse since the council reduced rubbish collections. It’s easy to generalise and stigmatise an already rundown and depressed area without knowing the reasons behind it all, these are still people’s homes who may have no choice in where they live but are trying their hardest.

Ely is pronounced as E-Lee and Caerau is a Welsh name meaning field and is said like Kay-Ry, however many of the locals don’t pronounce it properly and say it as Ky-Ruh. I was raised there since I was about 3. Caerau and Ely are actually separate districts but many consider them the same place. Caerau is considered the more “safer” area than Ely as it does have some nicer estates. As for the other districts, I know that Cathays is number one on this list but Adamsdown is by far is most horrific district in Cardiff from personal experience, it’s a literal dump especially on places like Glossop Road.

You've misunderstood some of these crime stats. In particular, the crime stats for Cathays include crimes in the city centre. Where things refer to 'south Cathays' they are talking about the city centre. Cathays crime stats would also includes a large chunk of Bute Park (which is where some of the headlines you flashed up occured). Similarly Riverside and Pontcanna include Potcanna Fields and other parts of Bute Park, which wasn't mentioned. I note you did not include any green areas in your walk around the 'hoods' with the exception of the Church Road play area which has been unfortunately been subject to quite a lot of ASB in the recent months. You also don't seem to understand what the 'police powers' are and what they're for. Police no longer use 'ASBOs'. They haven't for a decade (they were removed in 2014). As others have said you also don't seem to give any good context. I makes me worry about what misinformation you are willing to put out. Saying 'w/stats' in your title implies you are giving good information but your content is poorly researched.

Splott would be a trouble free area if they didn't put these half way houses there. Most of the people who live there are good people let down by about 10-20 familes and all the reoffenders from the half way house.

Great video. I live on the edge of Cathays. The crime rate is really high because the city centre is also Cathays. Students can be noisy, but there are plenty of non students who can't put their rubbish out properly. I've lived here over 30 years. It's ok and nothing like as scary as Ely. 😊

It's pronounced K-EYE-RA and Ely is pronounced E-Lee I've lived in both areas most of my life and while there is a high drug presence and a problem with crime, the majority of the People are salt of the earth there's a great community spirit especially within streets. For example, it wouldn't be unusual for someone 15 houses up to know who you are and knock your door for some milk or sugar in a pinch Years ago when the kids used to play outside my late mum loved children and they loved her. They would knock the door for a Ice lolly in the summer it got to the point where so many kids were knocking. She ended up having to charge them five pence each to go towards boxes of ice lollies as she was going through so many.

Am amazed that Ely wasn't in the top 5, in truth, @ukexplored . Was born there, have family there, and I visit every month. You ought have visited St. Mary's Church in Caerau - it's been almost completely destroyed by local children over the last thirty-five years, yet remains a fascinating glimpse of what it once was. Albeit that some of the graves have been emptied or desecrated..

Lived in Cathays for 20 years, my partner all their life and it’s not dangerous at all, especially considering how close we are to the City centre. It’s densely populated, some areas have more issues than others thanks to HMOs as mentioned, crime is largely petty and figures are definitely skewed by the city centre stats being included. There are negatives but it’s walking distance to town, literally full of parks and a lake, food from all over the world, many many pluses.

Congrats on making caerau look worse than what it is by pointing out all the bad things, next time come later in the day when the pub is open and pop in for a pint, And maybe like the last youtuber who went in there you will realise it's not as bad as the reports make out. Or instead of making a video of how bad the area is you could make a video of how completely opposite the place is compared to previous stats and reports and prove them wrong

Told me I could leave my bags out in clear bags ready for collection because we lived in an accommodation, we ran out of bags and wouldn't give us any. One bag I put out, they didn't collect it and threatened me with a fine and court action then for something they told me I could do! Rats were a problem because of the rubbish etc. Forget about parking outside too unless you pay the council a permit. Even had an incident one morning, a woman got assaulted and beaten, terrified me to say the least. So glad I'm not living there no more

Cathays really isn't that bad, i wander those alleyways at night all the time and it's rare to see any real dodgy activity. The crime rate is due to people from the surrounding areas entering cathays to rob from posh students. The worst neighbourhoods to be in at night are adamsdown/ splott and even there i haven't had many issues. The city centre is dangerous at times but all areas are
Lived in cathays back in 1999/2000 was bloody great vibrant, yes there was crime like anywhere, but it was very cool, lived in grangetown 1997-1999, that was a little more 'scary' but again fine.

Sadly you took a preconceived view of CAERAU ( kai rahh) Ely is also pronounced Eeelee. CAERAU and Ely are both very community based and have so many positives, Cardiff West is very under privileged and very neglected by the Labour council who have neglected these areas for a number of years. You can tar a whole community with news reports, but spend time and meet the people. That is what caerau is...Not the buildings .. the people

Cathays is indeed hell if you're not a student, thankfully on our block there is only 1 student household, rest is families. Crime in the actual parts of Cathays were people live etc isn't particularly bad but we do get all the city centre crimes lumped in with our area which makes it seem absoultely horrific :p

I have a lot of family living in Grangetown and it’s a lovely place, my mum grew up on Paget Street and my family all live in between Paget Street and corporation street and I spend at least 3 months a year there. Recently I’ve heard that it’s been going downhill from then but I never witness anything while I’m there. I genuinely thought Splott would be on this list along with Ely
@bowendesign4 ай бұрын
lol mate adamsdown has its problems but it’s really not half as bad as you’re making out. Hardly dangerous. It’s quite easy to visit an area and pick on problems and edit things to blow them up and make them worse than they are. The majority of people aren’t going to have issues at all. And bin day is cleared up pretty fast. The main street, Clifton Street, has a fair few great places to eat and stop at. The main issue is some halfway houses, but the problem people tend to keep to themselves - and some of the people in them are really trying their best. Take it from someone who has lived in Tottenham and parts of London for most of his life, it’s fine, and Cathays and Riverside are also generally fine. The worst thing that’ll happen in Cathays is students and most of them are most likely going to be science nerds. Most cities around the UK have similar issues and I’m not going to pretend there aren’t problems but it’s nooo way near as bad as you’re making out.
@ukexplored4 ай бұрын
I hear you, that's why I go with the offical stats - it's not my opinion, and I don't edit things to make them look worse, I showed what I saw. I read dozens of news reports though, the crimes are pretty serious in those areas, and the crime numbers are insanely high - there is no way to sugar coat that. Sure, plenty of people don't experience any problems, but we shouldn't minimise the fact that a lot of people who do run into serious problems in these areas. On paper, the numbers are high, you can look that up for yourself. It is a capital city at the end of the day, which brings a lot of issues. But like I said in the video, Cardiff is an awesome place overall and in the right areas but I think it's important to show these areas.

@bowendesign4 ай бұрын
@@velvetinedrapes4359 it’s bin day. We do actually have a rubbish problem in Cardiff as a whole (not just poorer areas) but it’s wholly exacerbated on a Thursday. Ftr I don’t live in adamsdown but head there frequently, most days it’s completely fine.
@bowendesign4 ай бұрын
@@ukexplored if you live here though you’d know that most crime takes place between people who know each other. The vast majority of people won’t come up against anything. I’m not going to argue that the Main Street in Adamsdown can’t be seedy but it’s one thing showing the bad, but you also have a lot of positives there from the local circus crew in the church doing good for kids, the yearly festival, places like the Portuguese bakery, the hole in the wall butchers, Sparrow, an excellent Polish deli and a fair amount of solid restaurants and takeaways. Stats don’t tell the whole story, as walking around on a rainy day focusing on problems. But I guess positives don’t get clicks.

Cathays I can believe. I remember walking by a set of houses a few years ago in 2017 or 2018 and then seconds after passing by one house I saw and heard the sound of a table smashing through a window and landing on the street right at the spot that I'd passed a few seconds before, followed by the sight a man sticking his head through the window and screaming his head off. Avoid that place at all costs.
