The same thing in the UK depending if its barriers without skirts. If its no skirts, they might go like 27 seconds before the train arrives, and if it has skirts, it might come quite a few minutes before the train.

Nice video! I noticed one of the signals had a broken background on it! Also, the longest activation that I've personally seen was probably an almost 30 minute activation that I caught on the CSX S&NA South Subdivision recently due to a rail train laying out some new rail. Also, one could make the argument that something like this (where the crossing stays active for an extremely long time before the train comes) is bad for the general public, as not only does it cause traffic delays, but it also causes the public to become less and less likely to obey warning signals should they feel that they could wind-up having to wait almost 10 minutes for the signals to shut-off.
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was not expecting the train to take so long to cross here. I think the activation sensors are *before* the Figueres Railway Station to allow the level crossing to lower in time for non-stop trains. For trains stopping at the station however, the crossing goes down really early. A couple of people did cross when the crossing was down but then this is Spain, so no-one really cares that much lol
@freebrickproductions

They should have it time out after a few minutes then, with the crossing activating again should a train get closer after it has timed out.

The law in Spain says that level crossings must be closed at least 30 seconds before a train to pass through. But this is more than excessive. I suppose there is a station between the sensors which detect the trains and the level crossing, but there must be a solution.
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Figueres station is before this crossing and it appears the train was stationery for at least 5-6 minutes before departing.
@jovetj
@jovetj 6 жыл бұрын
There are several different types of solution. A timeout system could be installed with a second set of sensors between the station and the level crossing. If the train doesn't hit both sensors in the correct order in a certain amount of time, the crossing shuts off until the near sensors are activated. Or, the North American practice of a crossing predictor could be implemented, which "hears" trains on the rails and knows exactly how far away they are and exactly how fast they're moving.
@F40-RULES
@F40-RULES 5 жыл бұрын
@@jovetj Or the train engineer can type in a code in the radio to remotely activate the crossing when it's leaving the station so that traffic doesn't have to wait too long for a train to pass. It does that all the time in Massachusetts. These foreign crossings are so poorly timed.
@jovetj
@jovetj 5 жыл бұрын
*@Save The F40PH* Europe does not really have "crossings" like the United States does... both in terms of quantity, design, mission, or technology. Europe would never go for DTMF code control on a radio, because they rely on human behavior which is flawed. Europe is trending more towards PTC-like fully-automatic activation. Like PTC in the United States, that technology is striving to become smarter all the time. However, Europe is a lot smaller/less rail'd than the United States, so it's easier to deploy such grandiose technologies there. Crossings such as this one are timed the way they are because the signal system is interfaced to the level crossing controls. The level crossing has to close far before the train arrives so that the train continues to receive the best signals (and maintain the best speed) that it can. Another argument for it is that, if a situation arises at the crossing, there is a better chance at having enough time to notify the railway and avert disaster.
@El-Mengu
@El-Mengu 2 жыл бұрын
Spanish train driver here. Rail crossings in Spain become protected, that's the technical term, for 10 minutes, after which it becomes unprotected again if the train hasn't passed it yet. Trains are usually expected to cross between 30 seconds and 2 minutes after the protection process has completed. A special light signal with 3 possible aspects is presented to the train driver at braking distance of the level crossing, informing him of its state in advance, including if there are any stuck vehicles thanks to pressure detectors, so that he may proceed at normal speed or slow down to a stop in time. While I don't know the specifics of this case, 9 minutes is very extraordinary. Railway code states that under normal circumstances, after passing the rail crossing light signal, should a train driver slow down to under 40 km/h or make a commercial stop for over 2 minutes, the level crossing(s) ahead must be considered unprotected, requiring the train driver to stop and apply a special protocol for passing it safely. If that's the case in this video, either the crossing is interlocked with Figueres station and the commercial stop took longer than normal, or the driver failed to apply the special protocol I mentioned which is incredibly reckless and certainly believe it's not what happened. Spanish rail crossings are incredibly safe compared to those found in most other countries, certainly those outside of Europe, if this one stayed closed for nine minutes: 1. it isn't common and 2. there must be a really good reason for it.

Yeah. No-one seems to care here. Whilst waiting for this crossing to activate, a woman about 500 yards along the track from the crossing, a woman just crossed the railway line in flip flops where there's no pedestrian crossing. There is no safety fences here which, in a way, encourages people just to cross the line.

Common Spanish rail crossings become unprotected again after 10 minutes. Being relatively scarce in Spain, relegated mostly to a low-traffic countryside context, it's a good balance between safety and disrupting what little traffic there is. It's very rare to find rail crossings in sizeable urban areas, so no traffic jams are caused.

I think the sensors have been put far back is in case of non-stopping trains. If the sensor was after the station, the level crossing here would not have a safe amount of time to lower for a non-stopping train (such as a freight train).
