Ukraine advances 5km behind Russian lines in new Kursk offensive

Ukrainian forces have advanced up to five kilometres behind Russian lines in a fresh assault on the Kursk border region, footage suggests.
Kyiv’s troops launched a counter-attack against Russian forces in the region at the start of the year, with hundreds of soldiers and dozens of armoured vehicles advancing on enemy lines south-east of Sudzha.
Now, geolocated combat footage has shown that Ukraine’s forces are operating further behind enemy lines than previously known.

The role of drones in the war is a little exaggerated. They do make an impact, but the overwhelming majority of casualties on both sides are still caused by artillery.

Take out the enemy's drones=their artillery instantly becomes a lot less effective while yours stays as deadly as it was. That's more difficult than taking out the bomber drones and kamikaze drones (since the observation drones are usually far away above their own side's frontline looking out at the enemy, bomber drones and kamikaze drones have to get close to the enemy) but if it can be done consistently it could be a war-ending development.

Ukraine needs to be careful. My fear with them making gains on Russian territory is that they are overextending themselves when those mechanised brigades could be used more effectively in Ukraine itself. If their hope is still to seize land they can use to trade back for their own territory later then they need to look at the reality - they've take a tic tac compared to what Russia has and nothing that is strategically important to Russia so they need to ask themselves if this is really a viable strategy, especially if it comes at the expense of an incorrect use of manpower when there are more desperate sectors in need of support on their frontline. If it's to prove to their allies that they're still worth backing in the war, that they're capable of taking the fight to Russia then that is a vanity project they can ill afford. I can't help but think that the Ukrainian troops in Russia could be put to better use reinforcing Pokrovsk (a key logistics hub for Ukraine currently under attack) or as relief for other units who have been on the frontline too long without a proper rest.

I think Ukraine is attempting to take as much territory inside Russia as possible so they can offer an exchange of Ukrainian-occupied territory inside Russia for Russian-occupied territory inside Ukraine. This is similar to how Israel launched attacks across the Suez Canal during the Yom Kippur War to capture Egyptian territory they were then able to exchange for territory inside the Sinai Peninsula that Egypt captured at the beginning of the Yom Kippur War.

Why now? Today Ukraine lost Toretsk - a large city in Donbas (pre war population of 70k with suburbs). As it happened every time a major Ukrainian city falls, their command conducts some limited offensive operations to shift the focus in the news both domestic and outside the country. But the fall of Toretsk is actually the real news any respectable media should be talking about and not some potato fields in Kursk which were captured the same day.

And the reason why these cities grew so populous in the first place will remain. For instance, Bakhmut was near salt mines, and it was long speculated that Prigo was obsessed with taking the city cuz he wanted to extract its mineral wealth. Toretsk has economic value too, and its prewar population is a good indicator of that value. ​

'quick defeat' is militarily not possible, russians have much more ammo, soldiers, what is possible is prolonged war + sanctions(and targeting its shadow oil fleet) for at least 2-3 more years before russia gonna have to face a decision to either withdraw its troops or collapse economically. only economical defeat is possible.

The russian armed forces are already having to rely on older and older equipment on average, reducing their capabilities and increasing the casualties, which is saying nothing of the reduction in armor that will come once their old soviet stocks they have been refurbishing will be totally empty. Economically, the cracks are showing and most indicators are in the red. => Russia is having to sacrifice more and more for Putin's war, 'cause its resources aren't unlimited by far. Given the lack of results now, it's clear Putin relies on the US aid being cut, otherwise it's just a matter of time before all the advantages the russian armed forces used to enjoy will have disappeared, which would change the dynamic on the ground.

Ukraine stopped complete takeover by Russia in the early part of the war. Even if they have to give up the Luhansk and Donbass regions to end the war i don't believe they actually lost. I don't think Russian losses, economic damage, geopolitical isolation can justify claiming Donbass and Luhansk as a victory over Ukraine.

I have noticed a sudden increase of Ukrainian drone footage (which I assume is new). Some of the trajectories of the drones on moving targets seems almost too perfect, making me think this is AI piloted drones.
