Its called defense in depth. Causing high attrition while trading territory. As the russian offensive is expected to culminate in the coming weeks, ukraines strategy is at risk if russia stops the offensive. Therefore they made an incursion into russia itself to make sure russia would have to stay on the offensive for political purposes once their eastern one has culminated. This would allow ukraine to continue to attrit the russian forces in a defensive stance and keep the casualty advantages.

The turtle tank for example has been very effective at countering drones for cheap but all indicates that they still perform meatwave attacks for example. I believe the river you are refferring to is the Dnipro which is the largest there is in ukraine. But even if we ignore the fact that this river is already a frontline near kherson, the river is only of strategic importance for the defender as it a great ostacle for rhe attacker to cross. I think maybe you mean the bigger settlements are the importance like zaporiszhie, and while it will not mean it being over at all, i will agree loosing those seetlements would be a big hit to their war effort. That being said. Even at this current stage with the offensive at its peak, it would take years to reach any coty of such level of significance. And that is if russia can sustain an offensive indefinitely, which it cannot, just like bakhmut and every other offensive on either side. It will culminate. Most estimates are in a few weeks. If the ukranian effort in kurs oblast continues to develop it is guaranteed to end soon as the russians relocates troops. They can only do this where they are already assaulting as that is where they have the numbers advantage. Also the belgorod and bryansk oblast is similarly lightly defended so putin most likely need to reinforce this one as well or face similar incursions which would be a show of weakness he cannot afford politically both domestically and internationally.

These full scale war (where after every land grab digging in/fortifying is immediately needed and done) has been going on so long and moving back and forth in certain areas. Defensive lines once captured and pushed past don't magically disappear.. They are fixed up and will be used again if needed, which makes it much easier to take counter measures and plug holes..
