Ukraine dam: Thousands evacuated from ‘critical zone’ near Kakhovka plant - BBC News

In Kherson, a Russian-held region of Ukraine, a major dam has been damaged resulting in the evacuation of thousands of people downstream.
President Zelensky said 80 towns and villages were at risk of flooding after the destruction of the dam at Nova Kakhova, which he blamed on Russia.
Russia has denied destroying the dam - which it controls - instead blaming Ukrainian shelling.
Neither Ukraine or Russia's claim has been verified by the BBC.

@Kom&dim Ukraine bombed the dam November 11, 2022. Gates reportedly weren't functional, and water overtopped the dam from torrential rains. Any dam will fail from being overtopped. That creates very dangerous conditions. Why don't both sides stop, stop the BS in the media, and work this out??? Why not allow those who wish to cede from Ukraine do so? People 33 years and older born there are Russian, in fact Ukraine before 1991 was part of the USSR. Allow the areas that voted to cede from Ukraine go, instead of fighting with them, causing death and destruction? International law includes a law re: Self-determination. Zalensky needs to stop the drug use, and read it, instead of getting his people killed, and keeping the war going. Ukraine isn't a democratic republic, it's become more and more a totalitarian dictatorship.

May not take a 'long time' to drain. The estimate are water levels will peak in 2 or 3 days then start to drop.
@bluegold21
@bluegold21 10 ай бұрын
@@bobdeverell Rough math time: 200 sq km. The height of the dam is 30 meters so that is likely the average overall depth give or take when adding in the embankments and submerged topography(so being aprox 20m average depth of water) of the reservoir which is actually fed by a large river. So 200sq/km X 20 cubic meters = 4 billion tonnes of water. (fact check approved) If that was flowing out at 4 thousand tonnes a second my approximation is 11+ days to completely empty. Although there is a large river supplying it. [edit] Avg depth is 8.4 meters-should have researched better. So about 4-5 days to empty. But a large river still feeds the system. Its a catastrophe no matter how one slices it.

@@jamessmithers4456 The explosion that destroyed the dam was an internal explosion on the Russian side of the dam. Either the Russians blew it up deliberately or accidentally. Blowing the dam has made that entire section of the Dnipro impassible, due to mud. It will probably be a month before the territory is passible, again. That benefits Russia, as the defender. It also cut off water to three canals that provide water for Ukrainian crops. Ukraine will probably lose 1/4 of this year's wheat crop.

Curious thing about the old Azov battalion was despite Russia claiming they were some sort of Russophobic supernazis, they were actually an entirely Russian speaking battalion which initially had extensive brotherly links to ultranationalist groups inside Russia. Most of them couldn't even speak Ukrainian! Rather ironic really, and clearly not what Russian propaganda claimed them to be.

The overwhelming amоunt of approving and cheering соmments by ordinary Russians in response to videos about the atrocities committed against civilians and prisoners of war in Ukraine were equally as shocking to Ukrainians as the war itself. We somehow became accustomed to the war, but the realization of who we have been living alongside all this time without even knowing it is still horrifying. Those sаvаgеs referred to themselves as our brоthеrs. Just imagine what they would do to you, who they саІІ their enemies, if given the chance. Never loss hope in the good Russians. I grew up in a city called Belfast in Northern Ireland and knew nothing but war and a sectarian civil war with our Neighbours and fellow County men and wemon. Their was no place for sentiment or understanding for your enemy in those days, but after 30 blood filled years we found Peace, somehow. It's only now nearly after 30 years of peace that people can look back and see the Madness that we all contributed to, even in small ways. Please always believe in the decency of human beings even if its hard to find. There will be Russians disgusted by their government and leaders actions but to speak is so dangerous. The love and care for the oppressed and traumatized below is much appreciated in the comments section of this informative news video by BBC News about the destruction of a dam, which has led to flooding and the evacuation of thousands in a country that has suffered so much from oppression, violence, and invasion by another country. I need more sincere solidarity and grief. We must grow in our sorrow for our fellow men. There is consolation in knowing God punishes all evil and is close to the oppressed and broken-hearted (Psalm 9:9, Psalm 34:18, 12:5, and Isaiah 10:1-3).

Ukraine is among the top 5 grain suppliers. Its agriculture fields account for 9% of the global wheat exports, 15% of maize, 44% of sunflower oil and the dam destruction will affect many countries dependent on these exports. Without the dam growing this produce will be impossible because there isn’t enough water to irrigate the fields and the supply chain will collapse. According to some reports the production of 80% of vegetables and fruits in Ukraine would be impacted from the dam breach. The price of wheat spiked 3% after the breach, which is a sign of rising inflation and possible global consequences. The damage could take years to undo and repairs could prove difficult while the war is going on, and both Russia and Ukraine warn of ecological and humanitarian disaster in the flood zone. Both sides blame each other for the attack on the dam. Ukraine says Russia blew up the dam to thwart Ukraine’s Spring counter offensive whilst Russia insists Ukraine blew up the dam to cut off the water supply to Russian controlled Crimea. There are also reports that the dam was damaged days before the breach suggesting the structure may have fallen into disrepair while under Russian control which alone makes Russia responsible according to the West. I agree with Turkish President Erdogan’s proposal made in separate calls with the Ukrainian and Russian president to set up an international commission to investigate the destruction of the dam in a way that leaves no room for suspicion.

Well what a coincidence the dam "failed" just as the Ukrainian offensive is beginning. 🤡 Clearly Russia did this. Himars are quite effective on some targets but lack the power to take out hardened ones. Think back to last July when Ukraine attempted to destroy the Antonivskyi Bridge. Many Himar hits were required to even damage it and the Russians even attempted to fix it before eventually blowing it up themselves. The Himars damaged the roadway considerably but it took Russians putting a lot of explosives directly on the bridge to actually take part of it down. A dam of this size is a hell of a lot stronger than a simple road bridge and even many Himar hits would do very little to it. Even the Stormshadow missile with it's 1000 pound warhead is a joke against a hardened target like this dam. This was obviously done on site drilling into the right spot and putting a hell of a lot of explosives right there.

The idea that the dam just collapsed due to overall weakening and stress is not entirely feasible. The dam did not break in one spot but in two seperate spots, which is quite odd. Furthermore the graph indicates that the water level was already slowly declining, so that the pressure on the dam did already slightly decrease. So it seems that an additional factor played a role. It is interesting though that Ukrainian soldiers on the islets in the mouth of the Dniepr got seemingly surprised by the dam break and needed to get rescued, while the established Russian positions in the south are getting flooded. The Ukrainians however do have some capabilities for amphibious attacks, as they had been training with speed boats and canoes, however ridiculous that may sound. On the other hand the flooding made the distances to the Russian positions bigger, so that the flooding of a part of the Russian positions might not be very detrimental to them. The Russians on the other hand have now seemingly lost their emergency power supply to the Sapparozhzhia NPP, which could prove very detrimental. So either the Ukrainians blew the dam up and forgot to tell their own troops to evacuate before, the Russians hit it by accident or it collapsed on its own in a very freakish way.

The NPP is partially shut down and well provisiond. Any impact is not critical The 2 dam breaks did not happen simultaneously. Once the dam was breeched the flow could cause another break. However it is likely some military action precipitated the first rupture. I have argued that Ukraine did not expect its attempts to take out the hydro power and bridge would cause such catastrophic collapse. Now with hindsight I feel there is an equal case to be made that this was a successful move to deflect media attention away from the failed great offensive.

At first Russians were cheering and bragging about the dams destruction, then they changed their mind and started blaming Ukraine for the dams destruction. The truth is they mined the dam months ago and in the last few days shut the dams flood gates which raised the water behind the dam likely for maximum effect. The other reason you know it wasn't Ukraine is that there was alot of Ukrainian troops on the marsh land down river who were in panic to evacuate that flood area after the dam was destroyed. So I'm 100% convinced it was the Russians fault either on purpose or accidently, as it seems that raising of the water level was detonating mines that were being submerged by the rising water levels.

@@angus7278 I'm not talking about the official Russian government statements, what i mean is that shortly after the dams destruction Russian "bloggers" on telegram etc. were basically posting about how it was a good thing that they destroyed the dam because now Ukraine could not attack across the river, however this soon changed when the official position of the Russian government was that Ukraine caused the dams explosion. At that point the Russian bloggers on telegram etc. deleted their previous posts and started posting about how Ukraine did it because they wanted to get rid of all the mines along the river, and that after a few weeks the water level will be low enough to get equipment across easily so it was all planned by the Ukrainians etc. they also showed widely spread videos of explosions around the dam and claimed it to be Ukrainian artillery, but other videos clearly show mines detonating randomly in the submerged water.

@@7171jay Yeah true himars usually wouldn't be able to destroy such an object but its possible himars would have been able to detonate the many mines and explosives that had been placed around and inside the dam, but clearly Russia had more motive to do this than Ukraine fearing being completely overrun by upcoming Ukrainian counter offensive. Why raise water level right before if you dont plan to destroy?

(Maj. Gen. Andriy Kovalchuk, the initial commander of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kherson region) "Kovalchuk considered flooding the river. The Ukrainians, he said, even conducted a test strike with a HIMARS launcher on one of the floodgates at the Nova Kakhovka dam, making three holes in the metal to see if the Dnieper’s water could be raised enough to stymie Russian crossings but not flood nearby villages. The test was a success, Kovalchuk said, but the step remained a last resort. He held off." The washington post December 29, 2022 at 1:00 a.m. EST

As a reminder, just a few short months ago Western analysts were saying that, for Russia to do this, would be equivalent to “blowing its own foot off”. They now want you to forget that and just blame Russia while ignoring that: 1. Once the reservoir finishes draining, the river will be much smaller and easier to ford by the AFU. 2. The flooding is forcing the abandonment of Russian defensive positions as well as the destruction of minefields along the River. 3. The destruction of the Dam means Crimea loses its water access. The strategic benefits are obvious for Ukraine; up to this point Russia could economize in the Kherson sector, as the wide ranging river with no bridges precluded any serious amphibious assault. By doing this terrorism, they’ve now created a realistic threat of such once the flood waters recede, which will divert Russian reserves to cover this sector instead of allowing them to be used against the Ukrainian offensive further East.

Do you have sources for the information regarding it being the equivalent to "blowing it's own foot off"? - I've been following a lot but I may have missed this one. Further to that, calling this terrorism is an interesting one, if it were a tactical decision to work at removing an invader from your lands. Not to mention the benefits wouldn't outweigh the disadvantages, in that the Dnipro river is going to be harder to cross, so it won't help them there. It'll also affect their own positions as it would for Russia. They have other equipment to deal with minefields, rather than affecting their own critical infrastructure, which they need for power - so the resource drain would then have an adverse effect as well as the potential damage from this. Anyway, if you post the sources for information on "western analysts" talking about this being done before it was, (and why would they have been specifically speculating if Ukraine would blow up their own Dam. That seems an awfully convenient argument). Being cynical is important about these situations, but your points have huge holes in them, so with out further sources I don't think it will hold much weight as an argument. This is more like if Ukraine did it, it would be blowing their own foot off, than if Russia did it. Just to add to this: It was Russian occupied territory - on that side that the explosion occurred. This was likely to halt or slow a counter-offensive, and has potentially catastrophic issues for Ukraine. Just checked this account as well. I recommend people check accounts to see if they appear to be a "fake account" or a bot, and this account looks dodgy. Having said that, they have a chance to post sources - and they speculate and draw conclusions with nothing to back up their points. Go figure.

Over months of occupation, the Russians had dug trenches and built large defenses. The farmland of the steppe offered little natural cover for an attacking force, and a maze of irrigation canals as obstacles. Moscow had brought in its best troops. “The minefields they set up there - they practically didn’t know themselves how many they set up. Everyone who came there would change them and add additional minefields,” said Maj. Gen. Andriy Kovalchuk, who was tasked with leading the Kherson counteroffensive. “We didn’t have the option to advance rapidly.”Kovalchuk considered flooding the river. The Ukrainians, he said, even conducted a test strike with a HIMARS launcher on one of the floodgates at the Nova Kakhovka dam, making three holes in the metal to see if the Dnieper’s water could be raised enough to stymie Russian crossings but not flood nearby villages.
