Authorities in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv ordered the demolition of a monument symbolising historic ties between Ukraine and Russia on April 27, 2022, more than two months after Russian troops invaded their neighbour. Former boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, who’s now the mayor of Kyiv, said city officials were working on plans to demolish around 60 monuments in the capital related to Russia and the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, Klitschko added, some 460 streets and other objects in the city are slated for renaming.

This is not trying to rewrite history. History is being written on a new page, documenting why Ukraine is doing this and demonstrating that dignity and mutual respect is the essence of friendship, once you break it by abusive behavior or even attitude, it’s gone. This becomes part of history. Russian rooks must adopt a new spirit in them, one that is devoid of imperialism, then this great nation can become attractive to all, including her neighbors. Right now and for the past hundreds of years, Russia has not acted righteously and respectfully.

So sad to see this statue go down. I mean I sympathize with the Ukrainians for what is happening to them now, however this statue is a symbol of them being Soviets in the past. The Russian soviets didn't betray Ukraine, nor the Russian soviets causing this war, it was Putin, and behind Putin is a circle of oligarchs who profitted from the fall of the then Soviet Union. I respect the USSR for being the first ever to establish a worker's state, the respect is equally given to both Russian soviets and Ukrainian soviets, and this is too heartbreaking to see.
