Turkey was choking Russia in the Black Sea, and Russia needed another way out to the Mediterranean for their oil exports. The solution: insert Russian operatives in Crimea as terrorists, so the Russian army can then sweep in and "save the day". Now, Russia's oil is so devalued and their economy is on free-fall, I bet they're now thinking that the Crimean invasion did more harm than good.

It is a huge success. Ukraine and Russia's goals are different. Russia's goal is territorial expansion. Ukraine's goal is survival. It's been 3 years now, and Russia is far from conquering Ukraine. Their teritorial gains are miniscule vis a vis Russian loss of life and they have not taken the fight out of Ukraine for what was supposedly a month-long "special operation". Ukraine on the other hand is still here, fighting. The invasion of Kursk serves multiple purposes: humiliate Russia, stoke unrest within Russian civilian population, improve NATO's confidence in Ukraine's abilities, create a buffer region, destroy Russian airfields and artillery, open a new front to divide Russian attention, potentially flank Russian occupied territory in Ukraine, and lastly to improve Ukraine's bargaining power during peace talks negotiations.
