According to Jake Broe ocean-going Russian oil tankers can no longer get under the Kerch Bridge because access is now blocked by defences against Ukranian drone boats. Russia is loading small unseaworthy inland-waters tankers with oil which they then transfer to the large ships in the Black Sea. The small tankers are not built to withstand open sea conditions, hence the sinking.
@trumpsuckspigbalz23515 сағат бұрын
Those small tankers were once full size tankers and they were modified for use in smaller waterways. The modifications involved removing the center section and welding the bow and stern back together. The welds were substandard and gave out during the recent storm.

His source is Sal at what's going on with shipping, who himself uses a few sources and some inference (IE: why would the ships designed to never leave rivers/protected sea be out there at all?). I believe that is true, and Jake does generally a good job, but Jake is usually a tertiary source or further.

A statement from the Danish Military Intelligence Service claims that Russian Navy ships may begin escorting tankers of the so-called "shadow fleet" fleet» through the Danish straits, which could increase tensions between Moscow and NATO. With Russian oil from the Baltic Sea being transported through Denmark's narrow straits, Copenhagen will play a decisive role in the implementation of this highly dubious initiative after the Baltic and Nordic countries announced that they would introduce insurance checks on Russian tankers passing through their territorial waters. Under current international freedom of navigation laws, Denmark and other countries are not allowed to require tankers to provide insurance information unless there is reliable information about a possible environmental threat. However, refusals to respond to such requests are usually carefully recorded, and when enough of them accumulate, more tangible measures may well follow. Copenhagen fears that after the introduction of checks, Russia will be forced to demonstrate more risky behavior with regard to civilian shipping and aviation Western countries, to launch large-scale military exercises near NATO territory, and to use GPS jamming equipment. Danish intelligence does not rule out that these actions could increase the risk of misunderstandings and even minor clashes both in the Baltic Sea and in the Arctic.

According to the BBC, up until 31 August 2024 Germany has provided about 11.4 billion USD in military aid to Ukraine. By comparison, the aid given by Sweden and Denmark combined, whose joint economies are less than a quarter that of Germany's, have given 11.6 billion USD. In other words, given that Germany is the world's 3rd-largest economy and 3rd-largest exporter (with almost as large exports as the U.S. with less than a sixth of its economy), their level of support has been and continues to be pathetic. But don't worry, the person and parties who inevitably will defeat Scholz in the upcoming snap election will be WORSE than him, because they're Putin-apologists! There's no need to even discuss Germany anymore, the natural leader role in Europe it could have had it gave away on the 24th february 2024 when it pledged to only send 5000 helmets to Ukraine. Other countries will step up, as they already have, whilst Germany continues cowering in the shadow of its history as it has done for 80 years

@Interglacial_optimist 🚢 Granted, I take your point, as compared to the RN having 1400 ships, in 1939, the UK currently operates only around 62 ships, with around another 12 being built or programmed to over the coming years. 🚢 Overall, the RN can still pack a powerful punch. However, for me, the Ukrainians ability to sink approx. half the Black Sea Fleet, without even having an effective navy, is much more impressive...

@suemowat222 Lasers are very inefficient, costly devices. This isn't Star Trek - point and shoot. Typically when a laser is fired into the atmosphere it heats the air constantly changing the direction of the beam. That's under ideal weather. The United States has been working on this for decades and put billions of dollars into it and still doesn't have a productive unit. Other countries have too. GREAT if it works, but under non-ideal circumstances, I'm skeptical.

@@ronin8926 Tanks, planes and submarines just needed to be improved and made reliable which they were in a relatively short space of time. Lasers rely on having perfect atmospheric conditions and even then they are severely limited as all the energy dissipates very quickly

well, theoretically they could be used to blind the pilots... it won't be Ukrainians but Americans testing such, though. Win-win for both.
