I'm rooting for the Ukrainians. I hope they make this Putin's Waterloo. Having said this, I should point out how limited the US military was in what the US govt. would allow it to do. There never was any hope that the US military could win under these conditions. The Taliban on the other hand was as ruthless as it gets. About all the US military could do was keep the Taliban from taking over altogether. I suspect the Russian military will be allowed to be far more ruthless than the US military is in what it will do to put down the resistance. Look at what happened in Chechnya. If the same happens in the Ukraine, will they be able to stand up? I don't know. I just wish that we Americans had given them the kind of weaponry that would allow them to inflict real pain on the Russian invaders.

As an Lithuanian, we have been on similar situation. We fought one of the longest Guarella warfare in modern Europe ever since WW2. Forest Brothers, Book smugglers and eventually Baltic way. 30 years ago, Russian tanks roll over innocent civilians, who were protesting, holding hands and singing. And yes, i was there as a 12 years old. Taking territory is essentially easy part. Holding it is a Hard part. Patriots will rise, and challenge Russia into another Guarella warfare. Ukraine was one of the first countries to accept our independence, therefor i hope all the best for them, and finally achieve freedom they want.

Sir Lithuanian Zemaiciai and Aukstaiciai have same roots and where able to organize partizan resistance in to late 50s. Ukraine east and west have been antagonized by successive Kiev governments. The only solution to stop civil war in Ukraine I see is split between east and west. CIA pushed this country in to 8 years civil war with no end. The only man who can fix it now is Putin. There's always two sides to the story! Putin & macron agree a deescalate, NATO pushes troops onto Russia's boarder while he sent troops home, with NATO behind them and Putin's exercise completed the Ukraine attack Russians in Crimea and east of Donetsk! Shall we look at the treatment of the Crimea under Ukraine rule in 2015 where the Ukraine completely cut off the Crimea and Russia built a 12 mile bridge from mainland Russia to Crimea to supply aid! I was in Moscow for a week in March of 86. I went traveling to Europe again in November and December of 90. I studied Russian history at UCSC with Peter Kenez as a direct result of these two trips. I knew all of this, but this scholar did an amazing job at being concise and clear in his answers. I think his most important point was that we should be looking at this through the lens of Putin’s personal vanity than pragmatic interests. Just like he said, it’s such an easy, but VIP, lens to look through. edit: I want to add, that I still think keeping Ukraine out of NATO is still Putin’s highest motivating factor. I couldn’t see the US after all allowing Mexico, for example, to become a treaty bound ally of Russia with a Russian military base on their soil/the US boarder. So, why would they expect Russia to accept the same thing?

There are many fun historians: Victor Davis Hanson, Niall Ferguson, Stephen Kotkin…economics is history, too, and Thomas Sowell is terrific and such easy listening (or reading). Yea the west can keep pumping weapons to Ukrainia. What is that ultimately doing? Sure pissing off Putin and setting him back somewhat but enough close to lose his goals. A longer war with more casualties (including civilian), accident escalation with a neighboring NATO country, and ultimately a limited or all out nuclear war. This is now a very real possibility. I am on a similar opinion. I think there might be a civil war in Russia before this is over... Way too many Russians feel shame, sadness and anger due to this war. They are also oppressed and kept in check through the application of fear. Add the poverty that will hit Russia due to the sanctions and Russians might get angry enough to do something about Putin. I wonder if the Russian authorities reinforced the prison holding the opposition leader, if he is still alive and able, he might get broken out. We should watch for that. I say the best thing to do with Russia after the war is to help them build a true democracy, give the Russians hope that corruption is not the only way of politics for them. Turn them into allies of Europe and no one will ever need to fear them again. Solve their problems that led to the appearance of these oligarchs and fascist leaders and we could earn the loyalty of Russians. We could win a larger prize as well since many dictatorships allied themselves with Putin's regime. Take that away and suddenly countries like China lose a major military ally which will limit their options to a point they won't start regional warfare. If we only sanction Russia and leave them in poverty, we'll only earn an enemy that returns after a few decades, similar to Germany after World War I. Punish only the war-criminals, the leaders who allowed this tragedy to happen, but after that it is important to HEAL the country, earn the appreciation, respect and love of the Russian people so radicals like Putin have zero chance of gaining power.

I would just add that one important element that was overlooked in this discussion is the self-declaration made by the US, not long after the Soviet Union came to end. In 1992 the US said: "The U.S. must show the leadership necessary to establish and protect a new order that holds the promise of convincing potential competitors that they need not aspire to a greater role or pursue a more aggressive posture to protect their legitimate interests." This is a quote from the so-called 'Wolfowitz Doctrine' which basically stated America's position on its foreign policy for years to come - notably just after the cold-war supposedly came to an end. How the heck would Russia read this back then, especially when Russia's offer of friendship was basically snubbed? Not to mention much later the US intervention in 2014 during the so-called 'revolution' in Ukraine that toppled a democratically elected Yanukovych. He may have been a bad president, but what happened to the democratic process where he could have been voted out in less than a year? Evidence seems to point overwhelmingly to US intervention again, notably assisted by former US Asst Sec of State, Victoria Nuland.

Always pointing to US or EU are sometimes excuses or easy ways to describe an event. Yanukovich was elected 2010 and over three years later he was voted out as he rejected an agreement for closer European ties, insisting on his Russian ties. Ukrainians have tasted both meals - Communism and Democracy. They overwhelmingly prefer the taste of freedom and Democracy. It doesn't require blame or meddling, it's a free choice for them.

The Cold War was, in fact, over. The problem was that certain long-standing institutions within the Soviet State were completely opposed to the breakup of the Soviet Union but had lost enough power and influence with the military to do anything about it. This group or institution is the siloviki or the security services. This large group of men had one goal, to put one of their own back into control of the military. Once that goal was reached they could move on to reconstitute the old Soviet Empire. Although they didn't want all of it, the simply wanted the parts of it that had something of value. Natural resources, fertile ground, intelligent and valuable peoples. They have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. They moved a second level KGB agent from the old school, 'moscow center trained thug' named Vladimir Putin into complete control of the levers of power. ALL THE ELITE POSITIONS IN THE INNER CIRCLE AROUND PUTIN are people from the Siloviki and knew Putin in the old days.
