Although the war in Ukraine continues to dominate all the headlines, many have forgotten that a war had already been raging in Donbas for eight years. We trace the geopolitical history of the Ukrainian conflict from 2014 onwards, uncovering its roots in history. Production began in May 2021, when the conflict was at a standstill and the international community was trying to solve it. From the beginning, we had access to top officials participating in these negotiations. Back then, we already wanted to show what was at stake in those negotiations, the weaknesses of Europe and the return of Cold War dynamics.
We look at the history of the conflict through archival footage from all over the world and testimonies from key participants in the past and current negotiations for a ceasefire. With them, we discussed the origins of the war, going back as far as the fall of the U.S.S.R.; the Minsk agreements; the “Normandie Format” meetings; and the years of stagnation followed by today’s full-blown invasion. Interviewing officials from all sides helps us to deliver a deep analysis of a complicated situation, and to tell these geopolitics in a lively, human, and nuanced way.
This documentary was produced by Talweg Productions and directed by Anne Poiret. It was first released in 2022.

Generally speaking when one country invades their neighbor - it’s not good. All you have to do to get the Russian side is listen to Putin’s speeches. I have. Gripes about the West, Nazi’s, etc etc. My fav line from his Tucker Carlson interview, “We did not start this war in 2022.” First of all, now it’s a war? Not a “special military operation?” I’m sure all the Russians he’s thrown in jail for using the word war will be mightily confused. Second, man, you took your army and invaded your neighbor. No hairsplitting will fix that fact. None of it is a valid excuse.

10:15 Fracosi Holland is more correct. The President of Ukrain Janukowytsch fled to Russia and the Parlament is legitimized to vote a new one in case the President is not cabable of leading the Country. Which was the case in Ukraine. The the Voting for a President was done threw a parlament Voting and (no MP was changed before, it was the Parlament elected years before) and in the regulations of law. So Russia always tells the Story wrong, it was not a coup (ouside of law) it was a revolution , but in the bounderies of law.

The comments at 47:40 show the shortcomings of the west. Western countries always like to play nice thinking that others think as the west does. The western countries just can’t seem to get it in their heads that there are other ideologies that people subscribe to and no matter how nice a deal may appear to the western observer to others it looks alien. The west is in loads of trouble with this line of thinking in regards to allowing immigrants from Africa and the Middle East to just pour into the west. Today there have been numerous terrorist attacks and huge increases in crime with the immigrants that the west thought if they were nice to the immigrants then the immigrants would be appreciative and become western, but they didn’t!! Putin doesn’t think like a westerner do he can’t be felt with like a westerner. A side note here, did you really have to play politics and totally exclude the Trump administration other than have those from the Obama administration continue the lies that Trump was envious of Putin and a Putin puppet? The rest of this video was pretty well done until that part of the video. Now look at the situation under Biden, it’s 100 times worse than under Trump because Putin knows Biden is weak and senile
@richardamullens
@richardamullens 7 ай бұрын
The west did not "just allow immigrants from Africa and the Middle East to pour in" - it forced it to occur as people fled for their lives. The USA and NATO countries caused trouble in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya , Syria and now Ukraine. In the case of Libya it used to be a successful economy with plenty of jobs for migrants from East Africa - now they all come to Europe. Lebanon too has a million plus refugees from Syria. The result is that Europe has taken the middle and moneyed classes from these countries - possibly this was the plan all along with only the most resourceful making it and many perishing along the way. Integration is a two way process - the host country has to welcome not spurn the immigrants and make it difficult for them to find jobs.

Biden may not be a spring chicken, but I don't remember him speaking about airports during the American Revolution era, unlike Orange Jesus. As far as uncontrolled immigration is concerned, Putin and Lukashenko organized a scheme to destabilize the EU by bringing in thousands of migrants and trying to push them across the borders.

So attacking Serbia and taking its land is normal and allowed but doing the same to Ukraine is a disaster? Well, exactly, we are watching the scenario seen so many times in performances of western nations - the difference is only Russia now plays the same role. Unfortunately, Ukraine appeared to be the victim of both sides.
@IcarosImmortal
@IcarosImmortal 8 ай бұрын
It is not the same at all. 1.Ukraine had undisputed borders. 2. Who attacked Serbia, for how long which treaties did the attacker broke ? Which areas were annexed from the attacker ?? Which scenarios have you seen from Western nations ? The only mistake was for the West to be soft to Putin and did not left him and Russia to rot from 1991 onwards. But that's what happens when Germany has a Cacellor for 12 + Years an ex eastern spy.

@@IcarosImmortal Serbia also had the undisputed border and was attacked in 1999 by NATO (although has nothing to do with any NATO country) and 15% of the territory is annexed - today it is called Kosovo - to be said Russia has a full right to attack and take the Ukrainian land as it just acted according to Western standards - so we need to decide, all countries will be treated equally or we can choose to from time to time who can be attacked or not. Very simple - double standards?

@@orthodoxserb6596 Wrong story to justify russia invasion, NOTHING was anexed from Serbia, there was a seperation in the instabile region of Kosovo, the territories were just forming after 1992 and this is more or less unavoidable, In contrast with Ukraine that for almost 25-30 years was stable until they decided they do not want to really be unter the control or Russia. Of course Russia did what thy did to other territories wanting to be autonomus as Moldabia, Georgia , Chechens ect. So different occasions and not double standards. You cannot compare apples with watermelons...
@orthodoxserb6596
@orthodoxserb6596 7 ай бұрын
@@tobybau575 there is no difference and the approach is the same - NATO attacked Serbia in 1999 with no reason (we had nothing to do with any NATO country and internal relations among ethnicities in Serbia can not relate to NATO). NATO directly supported the secession of 15% of Serbian territory and helped creating an artificial state called Kosovo, and still supports it today. Serbia also has not mass murdered civilians 1999, the total number of victims was at 10k in both sides in two years of war of which at least 3k were Serbs, the remaining 6K were Albanian + 1k other. Among 6k killed Abanians at least 3k were insurgents so we easily arrived to the point where 3k were civilians - as Albanian guerilla fighters were using villages to hide, half of 3k were collateral damage probably so we arrived to 1.5k really intentionally. That could be a subject of terror but in the 2m population, we can link it to the mass murdering at all. To conclude, NATO attacked Serbia unilaterally without reason, we did not attack any NATO member, they took 15% of our land and gave it to the Albanian narco-islamic cartel. This is even worse than what Russia did in Ukraine - so NATO has no moral right to speak about Russia-Ukraine at all. No one from NATO country has a right to speak about Russian aggression on Ukraine - they just do copy/paste from Serbia, Afghanistan, Lybia, Iraq, Syria...

Zelenskyy is running out of cannon fodder. Western allies are running out of ammo. Zelenskyy offensive proved to be an epic unmitigated disaster . Russians rejected any freeze of the conflict. Putin spokesperson said quite bluntly that all Russian goals had to be met (denazification, demilitarization and a neutral status of Ukraine). At this point unconditional surrender is the only practical solution for Ukraine. Hitler's Germany also refused to admit defeat until Hitler killed himself, then Keitel signed unconditional surrender.

@@vivalarazausarmyvet4453 You still don't get it. It's a war of attrition. It's not about capturing Kiev, Bakhmut, Odessa or Avdiivka. It's not about gaining more territory. It's solely about decimating Ukrainian army. “The main object of operations should not be the territory, but the army of the enemy” Helmuth von Moltke Sr. This war showed once more that old Moltke was right. According to BBC (Mediazona) total Russian losses by now are 38 000 KIA ( obituaries, social media records, new graves). Yeah, it's really staggering 38 000 Russian KIA and 500 000 Ukrainian KIA. The war of attrition is effectively lost by Ukraine. Anybody can go and see for himself. It's obvious that Zelenskyy also lied about a real mobilization potential and there are no next 500 000 to kidnap off the streets, gyms and public transport. NYT wrote about these mass kidnappings that were happening only in Zelenskyy Ukraine and Hitler's Germany in 1945 in an article ‘People Snatchers’.

@@joshuapaul2022over 300,000 Russians have died. and more will die. for it has always been the tactic of the Russians to throw people to the front regardless of whether they are trained for it or never held a gun in their life. sometimes they throw people to the front without working firearms. and their population would rather do this than turn against the leadership. the drive for self-preservation is not as great and tangible in a Russian soldier as the rest of the world's population. mobilizing soldiers through coercion, most countries at war have done. Especially if the luck of war is not on their side. and it is not unique to Hitler's Germany or Ukraine today. what is unique, however, is the brutality the Russian military is capable of inflicting on its own soldiers if they retreat. so the Russians would rather shoot themselves in the head than retreat back or surrender to the Ukrainians. but very true they will wear down the Ukrainians unless they get weapons from the West. And many, many more Russians will die before this conflict is over. @@ohhi5237 Prosperity in Ukraine has increased over the last 20 years and Putin does not want an economically stronger neighbor. He was afraid that his population would demand the same as the Ukrainians on the Maidan. If Ukraine had moved closer to the West, its prosperity would have increased faster than with Russia.

@@tobybau575 I think that in the east of Ukraine (Crimea, the Donbas, and Luhansk oblasts) Russia is preferred more (than rule from Kiev). Perhaps Odesa too. The real question is who incited the war. In my view it was Ukraine encouraged by NATO (in other words the USA). In the short term both Russia and Ukraine have suffered while the USA has never been so happy as Ukrainians are fighting its war. If the USA wins, it stands to extend its empire to Ukraine, where it will plant military bases. From my perspective I would prefer a Europe extending from Lisbon to Vladivostock rather than an America extending from Los Angeles to Minsk
