Close to eight months of a grinding war of attrition have devastated the city of Bakhmut in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. It is the centre of the longest and bloodiest battle of Russia’s year-long invasion of Ukraine. Once home to 70,000 people, now only some 4,000 civilians remain, according to Ukrainian officials. Despite both Russia and Ukraine pouring significant resources and fighters into the battle in order to secure a win, analysts are divided over the strategic significance of controlling the town.

That is a symbol from the Ukrainian Azov brigade. Prior to the war Western media widely reported them as a far right extremist group. Putin used their actions as part of his justification for invasion. The symbol means what you think it does shockingly.

@@tonyrodrigues1137 In 2014 following the maiden revolution, Ukraine wanted a rapprochement with the west because they didn’t want to continue to live in poverty and corruption under the russian influence. But two regions mostly Russian wanted to continue to get attached to russia and make both regions part of russia because of their russian origins. The people of these regions took arms against the new democratically elected government in kyev so the kyev government send army(like any country in the world will do for the integrity of the country) in those regions and that resulted to clashes between government force and rebels from donbas.

For the Donbas people who wanted to be part of Russia . instead of becoming rebels and class with the army why didn’t they just moved and installed in Russia? In 2016 in my first year of bachelor in Tula state university in Russia I was in the same group with an Ukrainian girl from zaporizhia she just arrived like 1 month Pryor academic year and before the 3rd month of class she already got the russian citizenship. The problem with this conflict is that russia still living in the past and want to restore soviet union(советские Сауз) in the 21st century.

All escape routes from Bakhmut and Avdeevka are under Russian fire control. Zelenskyy again successfully created these slaughterhouses for Ukrainian troops. He is a real butcher for Ukrainian troops. Ukraine already lost most trained and motivated soldiers along with almost all hardware it had before the war plus hundreds of tanks and IFVs it got from Eastern Europe (to understand the scale of losses it had 1 990 tanks, 1 212 IFVs, 1 112 heavy artillery systems, 354 multiple rocket launchers). Its army is a shadow of its former self at the beginning of the war. Mass summary executions for attempted surrender or unauthorized retreat just cause further demoralization and despair. Zelenskyy strategy is reduced to rounding up civilians often at gunpoint and throwing them into a meat grinder. Bakhmut is just the last instance of this insane tactic. Russians have 1:6 advantage in artillery according to WaPo of all places. 85% of Ukrainian soldiers are killed even without seeing an enemy . WSJ is quoting Ukrainian commander in Bakhmut as saying: “So far body count "exchange rate” is strongly in favor of the Russians. If we carry on like this, we will rapidly burn through all our conscription resources.”
