The UK is sending AS90 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine.
The UK is stepping up its support to Ukraine, with 14 Challenger 2 tanks also set to be delivered to Ukraine's armed forces.
The AS-90 howitzers are operated by five gunners and reportedly, Ukrainian troops will be given UK-based training on how to operate them and the tanks.

Great job indeed. If UK and US will keep providing continuous and expanding military aid for Ukraine - obviously other countries will follow the example. And that is exactly what we need right now. We have no right to allow putin to stay unpunished for the atrocities his army commited in these 11 months. It's high time for the democratic world to stand united in order to defeat the common threat.

@@hiigara2085 The Challengers can do what these cannot do and likewise the AS90s have their own very special capabilities. @@1chish Careful with saying "It's the best". It's better than anything the Russians have and that's what matters. Even if they send the T-14 to the frontline (which they probably won't), I doubt it's anything like what we've heard. Most Russian equipment and it's rumoured capability is bluff. Maybe only the Su-57 & S-400 are genuinely on par with Western equipment.
@1chish
@1chish Жыл бұрын
@@ecaeas4439 I very much take your point about what is 'best' and maybe I should have qualified that with 'best of Ukraine's options'. Which is basically Challenger II or Leopard. The French Leclerc is hardly battle tested (except in reverse 🤭🤭) and the French are slow to supply front line kit to Ukraine and the Abrams is far too complex to learn quickly, has a horrendous GT and burns fuel faster than Ukraine could buy it. The Leopard is again not too battle tested unlike the Challenger II. The difficulty for Germany is they haven't kept their own fleet up to good condition and their politics won't allow the export licences for the Poles to ship theirs which in any case are early '2' versions first around in 1979 bought from the Bundeswehr in 2020 and which are being upgraded. Rheinmetall are saying the earliest it could refurbish and deliver Leopards to Ukraine is Summer 2024. Remember we placed 24 Challengers into Poland to replace the Soviet era tanks the Poles sent to Ukraine last year. We have 14 more in Estonia on NATO support. So we already have the logistics support in the area. Bit of irony is the engines in Leopards are now Rolls Royce after they bought the MTU company that built them....

30 of those going to Ukraine, plus 18 US M109 Paladins in the last US package, Swedish Archers plus all the artillery and rockets the AFU already has. All part of one of the best fire control systems on Earth that doesn't need to do the spring plowing to be effective like the Russians. It really is an artillery war in Ukraine and even more than tanks Ukraine still needs tube and rocket artillery to win this thing.

@Deskry
@Deskry Жыл бұрын
However, both the AS90 and M109A7 (Paladin version) have only 39 calibre length barrels which using standard, unassisted HE projectiles have a maximum range of 22 - 24 Kms and 30 KMs only with Rocket Assisted Projectile (RAP) which UK doesn't use. This matches, but doesn't substantially exceed Russian systems. The game changers are the SP and towed artillery with 52 and 58 calibre length gun barrels such as the German PzH 2000 and the BAe (US) M777, both already in action with Ukrainian forces. These can achieve 30-40Km with non-RAP HE ammo and substantial ranges with RAP shells, especially the GPS guided munition M982 Excalibur which the M777 can fire. These are the game changers for the Ukrainians in the Artillery battle and are cheaper than the MLRS rocket systems. A 1999 upgrade program for AS90, "Braveheart" was to have included a 52 Calibre length gun, but was cancelled.
@dougcoombes8497
@dougcoombes8497 Жыл бұрын
@@Deskry They don't need to outrange Russian guns, just not be there when counter-battery fire arrives. And 24 km range is more than enough for heavy fire support. They can set up and shoot and be gone long before Russian rounds come back. The Ukrainian fire control system is vastly superior to the Russian system which is inflexible. Also Russian ammo expenditures are way down, will they even have any for counter-battery fire on the large scale. These are great platforms for this war as are the many M119 105 guns sent with a range of "only" 17 km.

As I understand it, the AS90 has a 155mm L39 barrel with only a 24-25km range - which makes it largely obsolete in the face of longer range artillery with L52 or longer barrels. I'm sure the Ukrainians are smart enough to use them in an effective and devastatingly efficient manner. So a worthwhile bit of kit, if vulnerable on the modern battlefield. I, personally, keep hoping that NATO intervenes in the war, citing the innumerable Russian war crimes, and acts to end the conflict, and so the deaths and destruction, in days rather than have mayhem continue for years. Fat chance, given the continued craven cowardice of the leadership in the USA.

@@fintonmainz7845 Putin cannot even defeat Ukraine. He knows he will lose everything if he opposes NATO (Russia has less than 4% of NATO's GDP, it is poorly armed, poorly lead, poorly trained and poorly motivated). WW3 will not be a consequence of intervention. The retreat and submission of an autocratic and evil regime in Russia will be the consequence. It is precisely such clueless fear-mongering as yours which is causing the continuing death and destruction in Ukraine. The moral and correct response is to clearly state the goals (the expulsion or destruction on all Russian forces in Ukraine, recognition of all of Ukraine as an independent, sovereign state etc) and to give a deadline for Russia to withdraw. Failure to withdraw will result in the annihilation, by conventional weapons, of all Russian forces in the Ukraine theatre of operations. I get that some do not see things the way I do, but only a madman would start WW3 in order to defend an illegal war in which its nation is committing daily atrocities against humanity. Sanity would prevail.

Can anyone tell me why Ben Wallace is saying that the range of the AS90 is much shorter than other howitzers in service? 34km vs 55km for french equivalents. I have always read favourable comments about the AS90 from those that use it, I would have thought that a significantly shorter range would have drawn negative comment.

The AS90 is outdated tbf. There are more modern howitzers in service, but the MoD is replacing the AS90 over the next decade anyway, so Stocks going to Ukraine where they'll still be better than the Russian SPG isn't an issue. The PzH 2000 is better than the As90 for sure. More modern targeting system, better armour and longer range.

@@addygreen8919 Effective range means how far you can fling the shell and have a very high chance of at least tickling your target with shrapnel in the shell's blast radius. Beyond that you can fire further, much further, but it will become (to the British Army's standards) unacceptably imprecise.
