Ukrainian conscript soldier breaks down during frontline training | Dispatch

Gennady Daskal is no stranger to blood and guts. Until last month, the 27-year-old was working in an abattoir in central Ukraine, killing pigs and cows for a living. Now, after being conscripted, he is preparing to enter a very different kind of slaughterhouse. As part of a rookie infantry assault unit, he is being trained up for the Donbas frontline - the gruelling combat zone that many nickname the “meatgrinder”.

“I got my draft papers, so here I am,” he told The Telegraph, as he practised shooting rifles and grenade launchers at a range in a Donbas clay-pit. “Of course I’m worried, because I know many guys who’ve died already - maybe ten or 20. But what can you do?”
Like other conscripts in the 22nd Mechanised Brigade, Mr Daskal tries to channel his inner-warrior. His callsign is Pitbull, and he flashes a cheery, gold-toothed grin. But asked about his wife and children back home, and suddenly he chokes with emotion. “Of course she’s worried,” he says, tears forming. “And the kids want me to come back as soon as possible.”

That is NOT a "breakdown". In a combat situation, a mental breakdown is 1000x as bad as this, total loss of control. That is a normal human response to a terribly difficult situation and the guy held it together and regained his compsure quickly. There are enough videos of volunteer women on the frontlines in the trenches and enough were picking up weapons during the battle for Kyiv . They are not conscripted yet and its good having people to be in factories so Ukraine can still function as a country.

In the event of a major war, this expanded reserve of women would be mobilized as part of the national reserve to serve in a broad range of military specialties. According to earlier legislation, women in certain professions were already required to register for military conscription. However, the December 2021 revision of the law regulating Ukraine's military reserves dramatically expanded the number of professions that qualify for mandatory registration with the armed forces. Now women who are librarians, journalists, musicians, veterinarians, and psychologists, among many other professions, are required to register for military service. Following the 24 February 2022 invasion, the Ukrainian government enforced a mobilization order on men aged between 18 and 60 to be available for conscription as combatants.

Imagine how many lives and infrastructure would have been saved if Ukraine had just decided to remain neutral and focus on improving the lives of their people. Seeing a US Senator (in full uniform!) threw me for a bit; I had to go look up why he is there. He's there of his own accord; he isn't active duty obviously but there to "drum up support" basically. While he is within regs as to wearing the uniform, I can certainly see why a Russian drone flying past and seeing him would assume "NATO troops are in Ukraine". If he's there, this "training session" was 100% staged. No way in hell a US Senator would be in Iskander range....my guess is they aren't even in Ukraine.

The reality is that if there is a lot of dude like that in the Ukrainian ranks the will totally ineffective because they don’t want to fight and at the first sign of danger the'll run away or surrender to the Russians. I don't blame him on the contrary I feel sorry for him. The man just wants to be there to raise his son. Someone like that shouldn’t been send to the front because they’ll just be more trouble than help.
