The Germans sort of did during WW2. When Germany was fighting France most of the French tanks did not have radios, German tanks did allowing their armored units to know what was going on. In Africa a main reason of early German success was because Italian spies have broken in a US Embassy and stolen what was called The Black Code. This allowed Rommel to plan out his attacks with effective intelligence on the opposition. This source of intel before the Allies changed codes was called "die gute Quelle" (the good source).

If anything you should blame their Army leadership and bureaucrats who wasted all their time and money on the construction of the Maginot Line. They should have focused on modernizing their armored divisions and mechanized infantry instead of fixed fortifications. Also keep in mind that the only reason that most of the British Expeditionary Force that evacuated from Dunkirk was made possible by the valiant efforts of the French who bought valuable time by delaying the Germans as long as they could.

@@Luis-be9mi to be fair it was worth it, until the Germans figured out they could bypass the line via Belgium. the defense line, while not impenetrable or indestructible could theoretically survive a month-long offensive. that amount of time is enough to reinforce and launch a counter-offensive to the Germans, of course that is if the Line actually stretches from the Coast of Flanders to the Alps.
@WeebsWithGlasses71

Kharkiv offensive was a masterpiece of military deception. Kherson was telegraphed well in advance and preceded by lengthy artillery/rocket preparations. Also, since it was a real offensive, Russians couldn't afford to ignore it if they wanted to retain their prior positions (partial retreat would have been wise but made them look weak, I guess). Even USA stated that they had talked Ukrainians out of a general counteroffensive, in favor of a less risky limited one. Then the concentrating forces maintained secrecy, so Russians underestimated the scale of buildup and either decided to ignore it altogether, or perhaps more likely, interpreted it as just one more local counterattack that wouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
@Cailus3542

It's reminiscent of the deception operation carried out before the ground offensive of Desert Storm. The Ukrainian generals are undoubtedly receiving a great deal of advice from their counterparts in allied militaries, and they're putting it to use with considerable effect. Contrast that to the initial Russian invasion which was telegraphed quite blatantly long in advance.

Russia had a choise to either lose Kherson or send troops there to hold a bit longer. Politically Russia couldn´t lose Kherson and so they were forced to send the troops. Ukraine knew the political situation and so they leveridged it to trap as many Russians as possible before blowing the bridges. Now that the bridges are taken out, Russian troops are stuck at Kherson with limited supply while Ukraine keeps on pressure to increase the logistical load. All the munitions sent to Kherson take away from the little logistical capasity they still have with those few intact ferries. Once winter comes Russians will have a miserable time without winter clothes, food, fuel etc.. It is just a matter of time until they are forced to surrender or try to walk over the damaged bridges leaving all of their heavy equipment behind...

Best of the very best of Russia, this puts to rest any cope of russia holding back the "real army". Over 200 lost T-80 variants since the war started now, I'm pretty convinced we've just witnessed the death of 4th Guards tank in real time. What a world we live in.

Yep a nice wrap up of the Offensives.... I like to think of the Kherson front as more of Siege with a limited classical counter attack component, but mostly it was a long advertised "Trap" that sucked in some of Russia's best forces and got them trapped on the wrong side of a river with no bridges and inadequate supply lines.... Those Russian troops cannot be used anywhere in Ukraine now. They are held in "Check" by a similar Ukrainian force to stop them breaking out, thus Ukraine can use the 3 to 1 troop ratio it would need to counter attack Kherson proper, elsewhere... That's the beauty of the Kherson Trap. Russia's best forces are stuck there doing very little strategically and slowly being ground down..... They were dumb enough to cross that river in strength... ;)

Kherson front is what happens when politics get involved with military strategy. Politically Russia can´t lose Kherson even though militarily the only smart choise would have been to let it go months ago. And so at the moment there are at least 25k Russian soldiers with extremely limited supply about to suffer miserable time with limited winter clothes, food and fuel. I think Germans had to deal with quite a few similar situations during ww2... :P

There is no rush for Ukrainian troops to advance.... Do brief harassment attacks and probes, and wait for fall and winter freezes .... a cold winter without Russian resupply lines will let Mother Nature be the killer, of poorly supplied troops, when the Russians can't exit south across the River.
@Dustin_Bins

Agreed. The only thing I would add Tinker is that by cutting them off they don't need to rush in and attack those isolated units. They can continue to use the MLRS equipment to destroy any bridges the Russians will deploy, thus maintaining the isolation of those Russian units. They get weakened and thus easier to destroy or if they wish to surrender, so be it.

Just wanna point something out. Russia doesn't have enough troops to defend both the Kherson and Kharkiv region. Wherever they chose to defend, the Ukrainians would attack the other place. Russian military command must have decided Kherson was the higher priority so sent their troops there. However the speed and size of Ukraine's counter offensive in Kharkiv was still way more than expected. With more troops defending a smaller border it will be tough for Ukraine, but they r fighting for what they care most about, their homeland. They r not giving up any time soon.

the mobilisation is still a matter of fog of war to some extent , & might be for a while still , particularly with so many differing local issues and methods of conscription between different russian provinces , & reactions to those, in one province violent mass protest, on top of the many fleeing to georgia, though not sure how many, and then border controls recently being put up there to iirc currently unknown efficacy , & then masses of personal accounts from all over too , including one uncomfirmed personal account of someone that was recruited in a recent drive being put directly on the front and then surrendering already , it's really hard to get any clear picture of it , & there are definite cases of loudspeaker bias blowing things out of proportion on both sides

The Russian partial drafting is more of a political move rather than an actual military strategy. The simple reason is logistics. If Russia have struggle for months to sufficiently supply around 200,00 men at the start of the war, it will not help the situation if another 300,000 men are force into the area. It will take years for Russia to rebuild its military, and that only if Russian commanders do not keep on stealing most of the military funds.
