Venue: Nowy Świat Muzyki, Nowy Świat Str., Warsaw
ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE
The Ukrainian ensemble Chorea Kozacka or the Cossack Choreia was founded in 2005 in Kiev by Taras Kompanichenko. He has also become the leader of the ensemble. Chorea Kozacka plays early Ukrainian and Ruthenian music, reconstructing old songs from the late Middle Ages and the Rennaissance and Baroque periods.
Their source of inspiration and information are manuscripts and old prints. One such precious book, the "Chorea Kozacky” found in 1640 in musical archives of Bratislava, Slovakia, has become the source of the ensemble's name.
Chorea Kozacka calls its concerts musical journeys through the land of the ancestors. The ensemble is well know in its native Ukraine, it has also toured Poland, Switzerland and Germany.
In this particular concert in Warsaw, two other ensembles specialising in the Ukrainian tradition performed with and without Chorea Kozacka. These were:
the Kapela Serhija Ochrimczuka or the Traditional Band Of Serhiy Okhrimchuk from Kiev and
the Polish teenage group Krajka (please read: /krayka/) from the city of Przemyśl.
THE LEADER
The leader, Taras Kompanichenko, is a painter and art historian turned musician. He plays the kobza, bandura and lute and does musicological research. He was also actively involved in the Orange Revolution of 2004-2005 and the Euromaidan Uprising of 2013-2014 in the Ukraine.
