So I’m Ukrainian. You asked to break it down to you. I follow US news closely, and I can say that CNN and company are pretty accurate, however a bit too cautious. In Ukraine we don’t understand the headings like “Gas shortage because of Ukraine”. No, it should be “Gas shortage because of Russian invasion”. And the like. But I don’t think you should go as far as to try to find faults in what is said about Ukraine (I’m not talking about another topics, that’s not my place to judge) on such channels as CNN, BBC, or Independent. Just avoid channels sponsored by Russia. As for “what caused all of this”. The start of the conflict is not 2014 (although it’s the start of an armed conflict). It could be traced back to 2003 when the hybrid war between Russia and Ukraine began, when Russia felt that it’s losing grip of Ukraine. Russia considers Ukraine to be its sphere of interest. But Ukrainians consider themselves European and want to be a part of European community. That is a threat to Russia that always wanted to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence. If you want to understand the whole conflict fundamentally, you’ll have to read or watch about the history of Ukraine. Because truly the fight for independence for Ukraine has been going on for centuries. Now we are getting back the statehood that’s been stolen from us too many times. And the war speach is something like a prayer or an oath of the same organization that fought for Ukrainian independance during WW2 with nazi, polish and moscovian occupiers of Ukraine at the same time.
