11:20 Whatever Johnson's faults, he's right in this case. The Baltic countries were either independent, or belonged to Vatican, Poland or Sweden for most of their history, and Latvia and Estonia had German-speaking aristocracy. They have a long history of nature-oriented paganism, Catholicism and Protestantism. Unlike Russia, they have medieval stone castles and typical European architecture. And Latvia has just won a Golden Globe for Best Animated Picture, and there's zero Russian culture or mindset in that movie (it's called Flow and it's a very Nordic/nature kind of thing). Those worlds just aren't compatible.

Latvia and Estonia didn't exist as 'nations' before the mid 19th century and the advent of German 'romantic nationalism'...the same that inspired such people as Wagner and the failed Austrian painter. They didn't have any state structures until the early 20th century. They didn't have an independent supply of electricity until 2025.

I'd say Ireland's President's remarks are at least slightly inappropriate, though my information may be slightly outdated as well. I'm not 100% sure if this is still the case, but Ireland used to be known as a tax haven within the EU (next to, sadly, my own country, The Netherlands). I'm of the firm belief that the strongest shoulders should carry the heaviest burdens (a traditional phrase of the Dutch centre-left). Without tax havens, we could up our defence budget (something I am not personally happy about, but I do see as a dire necessity under the circumstances), not at the cost of education and medical care (which, by the way, have been thoroughly hollowed out in my country both under Mark Rutte and his predecessors already), but at the cost of CEOs' private swimming pools and space projects.

Boris Johnson & Trump: "The EU needs to spend more in defense for this war, specially Germany. US cannot finance the war alone." Expenditure EU: 0.51% of GDP Germany: 0.42% of GDP US: 0.42% of GDP UK: 0.11% of GDP Just bringing some context. Please keep up the good work, but fact-checking or contextualizing voices that continue portraying the EU as lazy or a coward regarding the war would be appreciated. I know some comments are going to say this is a European war and it makes sense they spend way more... and that is OK if we think of the 19th century world where Internet, globalization and airplanes did not exist and distance did matter dramatically.

President Higgins lives in a country with currently privileged geography, as does the US. Ireland deserves protection, should that become necessary, as a belligerent overtaking the country would affect NATO countries, unless it is Scotland invading. President Higgins is both out-of-order AND out of touch in that he misunderstands the sequence of events (the order) and implications of those events (no touch…as in deaf, dumb, and blind to an unfolding world war) as well as in denial of Ireland’s ethical obligation to spend on protection from belligerent authoritarian countries at an international level.

@williammorris584Күн бұрын
@@toddlawrence6872 The location of forces matters a lot; the Ukrainians just shut down their only remaining coal coking plant due to the Russian forces’ proximity to Pokrovsk. Also, certain areas of terrain are the actual Russian war aims, which is kinda important. Attrition is favoring the Russians due to their better force regeneration. Ukraines population pyramid in military ages is worse than Russia’s, and their population is 1/4 as large. Ukraine’s critical need is for something no other nation can supply: more Ukrainians.
