Undoubtedly, NATO defence spending needs to rise - 5% would be sensible but 3.5% is probably a lot more realistic in the short-term

US defence spending is a little under 3.5% of GDP, according to the World Bank. I suspect Trump's suggestion of 5% is hyperbole. There's no way European countries will be persuaded to spend more than the US, and I doubt any defence spending rise from Trump will be to anything like 5%. Poland, however, might. They are currently spending 3.9%, and I am grateful to them for that.

When talking about Trump I notice an incorrect conception that Trump is thinking deeply about the war in Ukraine. He is not thinking at all about anything other than how he can brag about how great he is. Other world leaders that know how to play with Trumps ego will control him to do what they really want.

What people in the West have always failed to understand is that, by and large (with some exceptions, and of course all credit to them), "opposition" to the war in Russia is not the same as what people in the West conceive of as "opposition". A very substantial amount, probably a majority, of the people in Russia who are "opposed" to or "critical" of the war in Ukraine don't hold their views because they think the war is morally wrong, as we in the West do. These sorts of people are not opposed to Russia taking Ukraine by force, and they may even subscribe to the view that Ukraine is and should be a part of Russia, or at least VERY often at least of the view that it should never be a part of NATO, and that Russia has every right to dictate that. They are criticising the war because it's starting to affect THEM, their families and their loved ones, and as long as it doesn't, they wholeheartedly DO NOT care. They're critical because the war is going badly for Russia, not because it's happening in the first place. Again, of course there is SOME genuine opposition in Russia, and I don't want to discredit them, but this is what I would say is the largest majority of the Russian populace. At best, indifference, but quite seldom genuine opposition on moral grounds. And when there are such people, they usually leave the country. That's why polling such as "what the Russian people feel about the war" is so utterly unhelpful and, frankly, provocative to Ukrainians, because it quite frankly does not really matter what they think, as they are not the nation losing thousands of civilians to indiscriminate murder, and they've been quite fine for 10+ years not doing anything about "stopping" Putin whilst it was still possible, which it now largely isn't for anyone except the oligarchs, and even then no single person. People in the West need to wake up to the fact that the nationalist and militarist narrative that Russia has really always peddled to its populace, whether in Czarist Russia or the USSR or modern-day Russia, has created a culture over centuries that cannot be described, through the eyes of a Western democratically-inclined person, as anything other than morally bankrupt. And this can only be addressed by Russians themselves, but so far, they have proved unwilling at every opportunity to do so, because their supposed "military-industrial might" is one of very few things they think they have left to be proud of

I miss the Norwegian guy as head of Nato. I thimk Denmark has done the rigth think by investing money in Ukraine weapon/drone industry - let's face it, the Ukranians are smart, excellent soldier, why not use the defence spending in Ukraine instead of attempting to live up to the demands by Trump - which always carry threats. But Europe do need to understand that the US is not to be relied upon. Lies, lies, and lies from both the US and Kremlin.

Another issue should be considered if a European force acted as peacekeepers. It is important to not misconstrue actions by the CSTO and NK forces as being an active and immediate threat to the peacekeepers or Ukraine. During the Cold War there was Soxmix and Brixmix detachments on either side of the Wall to act as immediate liaison when needed, amongst other tasks.

China's Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday it added seven companies from the United States to its list of unreliable entities for selling weapons to Taiwan, which Beijing considers a violation of its sovereignty. The sanctioned companies include Inter-Coastal Electronics, System Studies & Simulation, IronMountain Solutions, Applied Technologies Group, Axient, Anduril Industries, and Maritime Tactical Systems. These companies will not be able to export to or import products from China and also won't be able to start new investments in the country. Previously, China added 28 US companies to the export control list including Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Raytheon Missiles & Defense, among others. Beijing said the measure was aimed to safeguard the country's national security.

This talk of negotiations is premature, and a direct result of failure to understand Trump (just the way he likes it). Elements of his personality and MO are understood: transactional, respects power, fundamentally image conscious, distraction, distraction, distraction. But they are being put together incorrectly. Sometimes it's pretty obvious: Canada will not be slapped with 25% tariffs, and no one will be kicked out of NATO, but Canada will tighten up it's southern border, and we'll see a 2% floor on NATO member spending next year, and better coordination of that spending. Trump is keenly aware of Russia's weakness. After all, this preternatural ability may be his defining feature. He isn't making noises about Greenland because of an American gravel shortage. Rather, he shares the common view that the best possible outcome of this war is staying the course until Russia bleeds out, Putin is uninvited from earth by the Russian people, and the country is compelled to spend another generation reorganizing itself. But he can't say that out loud, can he? Lest we forget, (hello, Europe) this war is a side show. The west needs Russia out of the way so we can wrangle the Dragon, while Israel wrangles Iran.

Is there any mention of the Ukrainian drone attack on the Turk Stream gas pumping station - a war crime as defined by international law?

There are more than 125,000 warcrimes recorded in this war. Over 120,000 have been perpetuated by Russian forces. We will be seeing years, if not decades, of the legal process

I think Ukraine should give five miles of Ukraine and Russia should give five miles of Russia and then they could have a ten mile swath of vacant land between the two countries that could be guarded with electronic surveillance and remote weapons…😊
