Ukrainian troops fire British-Made Howitzers at Russian targets

UKRAINIAN troops get to grips with British-Made Howitzers as forces fire towards Russian targets.
Footage obtained from the Operational Command West (OC West) - a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in western Ukraine with headquarters in Rivne - earlier today (Friday, 27th May).
OC West said (in English): "FH70 is already destroying the enemy.
"Our soldiers quickly master the latest weapons provided by partner countries, because they understand that artillerist and the gun in battle become one - a powerful and ferocious beast, ready to destroy the enemy who has come to their native land."
The FH70 is a towed howitzer built by the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy. It entered service in 1978 and boasts an effective firing range of 15 to 18 miles.
It is not known how many FH70s the Armed Forces of Ukraine currently have at their disposal, but it is known the pieces they possess were supplied by Italy.

The FH70 is a 155 mm towed gun, developed as a joint venture between Germany and Italy. Only the projectiles are from UK. Recently, Italy supplied FH70 to Ukraine.

There are ~100 Russian Battalion Tactical Groups in Ukraine currently, Russia is pretty much deploying all available resources at this point. Armor has been pulled from storage and manned with fresh reserve meat, and these forces are being used to relieve better units in rear areas to fight in the Donbas. Oryx is reporting 73 BTGs worth of equipment lost by the Russians, representing 42% of the 170 BTGs active before the war: 1/3rd of the Russian losses are captures. UK intelligence states that 25% of the forces remaining in Ukraine are combat ineffective, the actual number is more like 1/3rd as most BTGs are understrength. There are two main Ukrainian brigades facing off against the entire combat power remaining in the Russian army. The 53rd Mechanized Brigade is holding the line at Severodonetsk, their headquarters are in the city. The Russians have moved behind them to the west with the advance out of Popasna. The goal on paper is to encircle Severodonetsk and destroy the 53rd Mechanized Brigade. However, the Ukrainians have a second full strength brigade, the 54th Mechanized Brigade, headquartered at Bakhmut. They have a rapid response force, over 200 tanks in inventory, and at least one new artillery battalion with 155mm towed howitzers. They have the full support of the local territorial defense brigades and volunteer citizens. They have effective transportation, logistics and rations; front line troops in Severodonetsk are getting kitchen cooked meals delivered warm into their positions.

Weight, always seriously a consideration this guns almost twice the weight of the M777, which is newer but greater range than most russian guns. In larger wars, +80% cassulties are from cannon, mortars and air bombs! They win wars!

Both have the a similar muzzle velocity and ranges. The main difference is weight and cost, with the M777 costing several times that of the FH70, which Britain is giving to Ukraine, rather than the Lend-Lease price tag on the M777. Since the M777 isn't likely to be air-dropped in combat, it seems pointless paying the premium for light weight.

Autocannon like the ones on IFVs and Helicopters fire directly at targets within line of sight. A howitzer fires a shell that typically contains an explosive charge whereas a cannon (of Early Modern Warfare) fires a solid shot directly, i.e. a target within line of sight. A howitzer can also be used in a direct fire role, such as the "beehive" flechette shells for the US military's 105mm (I want to say) from the Vietnam era. But originally they were distinct

M777 made for rapid deployment and easy transportable but FH70 made for Accuracy and Stabilization

@@joeamerican2611 With very high accuracies, it essentially depends on the shell. On the M777 and 16-30 feet, it's an M982 Excalibur shell. 150 feet can be reached with a PGK. The accuracy can also be achieved with the FH70 and a corresponding shell (Excalibur or PGK). With an M549A1 the M777 also only reaches 800 feet.

Good gun made by a joint venture of uk, germany, italy. Saw this one day carried on train in a station here in italy. What i found very cool is the ability to move self propelled but i think this capability is only intended for short distance

Several got destroyed already, they got too close to the front line, and cant match the reach of larger Russian guns placed on higher elevation in poposka, popokas, whatever that place called. Ukraine need a true spg, the ones like this are just sitting ducks, heck a mobile ones also got like 50/50 chances to run after finish shooting.

This is a great piece indeed. But if you like artillery you would check the "Le canon de 155mm GPF "Filloux" This was he model that US produced under license during after WW1-WW2 and later became the famous M1A1"Long Tom" that stayed in service until 1995 !! The FH70 is a long descendent of the 155mm GPF Filloux

Germany and Italy and UK cooperated in development and it was made in all 3 of those countries and some in Japan. Bit of a faff to set up and take down compared to more modern fully mobile guns. 39 barrel will last a lot longer and need less maintenance than the uprated further firing ones. Great. But Ukraine need hundreds of these not 5 or 6. 100s of them.

Cruise missiles are very expensive. Tube artillery is cheap. If you can supply the ammunition and other consumables, they are also very cost effective and maneuvreable. This makes them far better tactical weapons than cruise missiles.

The 155 mm System is a trilateral project. The Uk made the carriage, Germany the elevating Mass ( burrel and recuperator/buffer) and in Italy the elevating system using rollers in ceramics. This was a delicate part since It had to equilibrate the elevating Mass and the Carriage. Ammunitions were made by ROFs in UK, by Rheimetal (Ge) and Simmel in Italy. SNIA in Italy produced propelling charges

WW2 weapons! Ucraine needs much more modern equipment. They're supposed to get the self propelled guns and Howitzer. The modern sistems are computerized so you don't lose any time with calculations. I hope NATO and USA will deliver sooner rather than later.

Served on FH 70ies during my time in the army. Pretty much unbreakable. Fascinated to see them in real use. I hope, they smash the occupiers. They had their chances to desert or surrender. So they are the game now.

It is an impressive piece of ordnance. It looks remarkably smooth in action with much less awkward recoil than you might expect for such a large shell. Ukraine is an excellent shop window for British armaments.

this is not a british howitzer. It was a jointventure development of Germany, UK and Italy.

@@martinwatts3796 I talked about the developement of this gun. Germany decommissioned and sold all FH70 around 2002. I was one of the last conscripts that were trained on this outdated gun. I don't know if Italy still has their ones, but curious that the uK still used them. And if Ukraine can use them, why not.

We were fast with helmets.... :P However the PZH2k are coming. Trainings for them are already running. I remember the trainign for the FH70 for conscripts took about 3 months but could surey be speed up if more focused. The trainign for the PZH2k is very likely more complex.
