A small 2 bed apartment in London starts at about $3700 a month. If you want a good sized apartment - modern - $6,000 mo.

The mystery house was perfect for them. After all, the did want to downsize and clean less. None of that was happening with the other two options. And their daughters: that living room was big enough for a pull out couch for visits.

The English are a delightful race and always appear humble and grateful on television. This couple are clearly confused about whether they want to downsize or whether they are looking for another family home. However I agree with comments below regarding the mystery house, plus the cleaning attitude, and would add this: when they were standing looking forlorn at the size of the mystery house kitchen, could they not have seen the obvious that, where they were standing, could have been an ideal, easy and inexpensive kitchen extension.

They need to look elsewhere geographically. They cannot afford a large house and nearby mooring in this area, and they do not seem able to compromise on either. Also, they need to think about why they need to be near London access other than the daughters, who will not always be with them (one would hope). They seem reluctant to let go of the family set up and truly downsize and think about what will suit them as they get older.
