What a revelation! So good to understand what’s happening and opens up a whole world of possibilities for learning and even composing/adapting going forwards. Instead of appearing totally random, there’s an order to the ukulele, which has just taken on a whole new meaning. Thank you for explaining this!

EXCELLENT LESSON! I've played piano for 40 years but the uke fret notes were a total mystery to me. As a complete beginner, but with good music theory knowledge, this video solved that mystery! I had to give up piano due to arthritis issues in my right hand. But I can strum with it, and learning how to play the uke is so gratifying. I have subscribed to several "learn to play" channels, but find I keep coming back to yours over the others. I am totally enjoying your teaching style and the content of your videos. Keep up the great work you are doing here. I know it's appreciated by more than just me.

Oh my goodness thank you so much! I started ukulele in 2017, I was still in highschool, and I got a $20 one off of Amazon that sounded absolutely horrible. Been teaching myself ever since and your videos have helped me immensely! Got my first concert a few years ago and the other three types of ukuleles for Christmas this year so now I gotta step up my game and play to impress lol 😄

Hi Kevin , being an ex driving instructor it's ok having the knowledge but it's how simple you get it across to your students , an being a beginner on Uke and having no musical knowledge myself , you put it across in oh so simple terms to understand the basics , top top tutor thanks.

AMAZING! I so wish that I had had someone like you to have taught me music when I first started to play the Piano all those years ago. Someone like you who did not feel it a waste of time to explain how to find your way through the music vocabulary, the note structures, and not feel afraid to tell us that we have to sit down and learn these things. The end result being that you can enter a musical world with confidence and the ability to MAKE MUSIC! Thank you so very much for helping those of us who are not so mathematically minded to ENTER into a magical musical new world that only a few with the knowledge can enter.

THANK YOU Kevin for this video! As a relatively new Uke player, I found this video to be not just an informative and essential lesson, but one that gave me an AHA moment as soon as you displayed the blank illustrated fret board on the screen. I immediately hit the pause button and took the info you gave up until that point, about the Ukulele having the 12 notes, and before you even went into anything else in the video I realized what you were describing and leading up to. I then asked myself "Wait a minute can it really be this easy?" and I started with the A string, just like you did later in the video as I went through all 12 notes on the fretboard and ending up at the 12th fret with the A note once again. I then did the same for the E string, then the C string, then the G string. Afterwards, I watched the rest of your video and followed along the same way, and had a blast, impressed with myself for figuring out what you were describing. You are so great as a teacher, that you managed to teach me, the student, a lesson, before you even finished teaching and describing it?! Outstanding. Even though I previously knew all 12 notes and that the B and E notes don't have sharps and I knew each of the 4 open strings on the Uke, I never put all that information together to discover how to identify every note on the fretboard until watching this video. I also need to point out how awesome your teaching style is. You are very easy to follow and understand, You speak nice and slow and clear so that I don't miss any words, and I don't feel rushed or anxious to catch up in order to follow along. I am grateful for your lessons here on KZbin and I am glad to be a subscriber on your channel and plan on taking any and all your courses and lessons. Keep up the great work.

This was really helpful! Thanks. I have really enjoyed your videos, and they have helped me a lot! Your intro to twelve bar blues is one of my favourites. Some mnemonics that I also find usefull while learning the fretboard (still learning! And I'm a big fan of mnemonics) ... "Don't BE sharp". ie. Notes B and E don't have sharps. And for recognising positions of notes on the fretboard I'm breaking the twelve notes into groups, and only learning the natural notes, because the accidentals are obvious when the natural notes are known. So, I use, "For Great Audio Beats" (F, G, A, B), "play a CD" (C, D, E). It's pretty easy with these phrases, because they repeat up each string and the location of half steps (B to C, and E to F) are implied. The phrases fit back to back, which means there are no accidentals between these patterns. Open and twelfth fret notes GCEA "George Can Eat Anything", and fifth fret notes CFAD "Come Friends And Dance". Thanks again, love your videos!

@MyMonkeyMind7
@MyMonkeyMind7 Жыл бұрын
@@deadmanswife3625 when I learned the fretboard is just twelve notes repeated up and across the entire fretboard, it seemed patterns could make it memorable. There's just something easier than 12 notes starting at A, and that's a group of 4 whole notes (of which there are only 7) starting at F, and a group of 3 whole notes starting at C. Within these groups all notes are all a whole step (two frets apart) but the groups are separated by only a half step (one fret). After looking for this pattern, as one pattern that just starts in a different place on each string, with repetition it will eventually be internalised, and you'll just see the notes in your mind. Helpful, or just more words!?

Hey Kevin - for those of us who are just now learning how to play the ukulele, could we requested a guided practice video on the chords most popular and well loved - that would be amazing!! Start out with a simple strum pattern for each chord and transition to the next chord (I think I would do the circle of fifths so it's at least musical sounding and pleasing to the ear to play). While we could easily practice this way on our own here at home, (Classically trained pianist here so I know how to practice on my own but I will tell you...) playing your videos and trying to play along is so much more fun for me these days. It's not only nice to hear the little reminders, but it's super fun to just play along with someone else and try to keep up rather than playing all by myself (total flashbacks of having to sit at the piano for hours and practice monotonous Hanon Virtuoso Pianist exercises out of my beloved yellow Schirmer book). LOL! Admittedly, I really did actually enjoy playing through that book but it just about killed me before I conquered it. Don't tell my piano teacher I ever said that... Also... think about it, if you put together a video like that, it is likely to get played numerous times over by thousands who are trying to practice and learn all their chords just like I am. That's an awful lot of extra passive income from one video alone... ;)

At 12:56 you said that is an F chord but is the F chord the same chord as an A# chord since both are played the same on the fret? A# note is fretted on the G string at the second fret which makes that note a A#.

I’ll try to help - a C chord is made up of the notes C E G. When you play the A string third fret you are actually playing the note C. So when you strum that chord you are actually playing C E G (top 3 strips open) and C (a string 3 rd fret) which is a C chord. Hope that is clear as mud. 😁
