Thank you for this lesson Phil,. I’d been groping around to get this effect, and now you’ve taught it🥳 I have to admit, the hardest part is to start the ‘Scratch’, with an ‘up’ strum- t’aint natural🤪🌷

The "Carter Scratch" is beyond my skill level, but it's something I'd like to try, and I can always come back to this video again and again. Thank you! 😊🎵

8:11 When playing connecting "walking bass" on g and C strings of high-G ukulele, one can look at them as reversed pair of strings fifth apart (which they are indeed). So the connection from open C to open high g would not be walk-down on the g string (as in case of low-G tuning), but walk-up on the C string up to the fifth fret (C - D - E - F) and then the open high g string. It may help if the C chord 0003 is held by middle finger as the remaining fingers naturally fall to the 2nd, 4th and 5th frets of the C string. (Thanks for all your advice and hope to meet you finally in person at the 2024 Zeliv retreat.)

Phil, you must be psychic! 'Carter Scratch' is exactly the topic I chose to learn this week. Thank you so much. You are the best :)

Please Phil, will you post a song or two applying the Carter scratch? Just one verse of a couple or so would be very helpful🙏🎶🌷

Your G7 fingering looks nothing like what I’m used to. Could you please explain how you are holding that on a soprano?
@PhilDoleman
@PhilDoleman Жыл бұрын
It's just a standard G7, my index finger is on fret 1 of the E string, my second finger is on fret 2 of the C string, and my third finger is on fret 2 of the A string. On the baritone it's exactly the sane but I have a capo on the 5th fret.

Hmm thumb UDU is like in the UDU. it's getting my nails stuck in the strings and just sounds really odd. Ideas or is it just practice? Hope you actually see this

Hi Mary, It's really all about a relaxed hand. The 'up down up' part mainly comes from the wrist movement, plus the angle of my hand means that my nail (if I had any!) Hits the string at and angle rather than flat Hope this helps!

For something like an A or E where you hit both G and C strings how do you play it? Just figure if the C or G string sounds better first? Play them together? Looking at this piece by Dolly, Emmylou and Linda note Dolly's hitting Hand C as kind of a walkdown:
