Aldrine-It feels as if music is to you what the spoken language is to most people. Thank you for being so humble as to bring it all down to such a beginner level and not assuming that it should just "be easy". I have just spent the entire afternoon listening to and working on following along on "Somewhere over the rainbow..." A few months ago when I just started w/UU I tried it and it was Greek to me and I was all thumbs and just so all over the place. I have been diligent about practicing every single day. The chords sessions are the best ever. Thank you so much. It is so great to finally get to be able to follow along on your audio part. THANK YOU FOR BEING SO THOROUGH! I recently got my first Low G ukulele and now eager to return to one of the first numbers I learned so long ago, yet felt it had become too “commonly played.” The strumming pattern here makes it new again, particularly if I like the sound of my new uke with this one. Thanks so very much!
@aaronfah6116 жыл бұрын
there are obviously other great tutorials how to do this with different styles to play it. I think that's the most accurate one that I found. However, muting with the left hand instead of chunking with the right one makes it harder, but I think it's a great exercise and I think that's how IZ does it. it sounds more peaceful and more reggae-ish, at least with the way that I chunk

It sounds good! I think this is the best tutorial of this song I've seen on KZbin yet, but with that C chord plucking it makes it SO difficult to do! I keep plucking the wrong string, unless I stop after each strumming measure. I have no problem with strumming and chucking, it's just not plucking C chord accurately every time that gets me so frustrated.
@ThijsVerberne5 жыл бұрын
You could also choose to put a low G string on your uke (I believe Izzy has that). Then you can just pluck your G string instead of the C string. Much easier.

all uke teachers do this. They will explain to strum one way, which they believe to be the correct way, then fall into a pattern that they themselves have gotten into. He is plucking 2 notes each pattern, not just the C. he is plucking the root of the cord in addition to the C. Super hard to follow unless you slow it down
@scootersays4 жыл бұрын
@@aa1bb2cc3dd4 thank you! I'm a self taught beginner on Uke, but I tried to do my own tutorial of how I do it, to try and help people out, that don't fully understand it either. But instead of doing the double note on the C, I have a low G and do the single notes on G, C and then the strum. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKSrkqicg8uCq7c

You can always slow the speed down on the video to learn the strum part. But this is a difficult strum pattern so it will take lots of practice. I found that with enough practice and just repeating it over and over, one day it just clicks and I can strum it perfectly.

Hey I just watched your video scooter; gave it a like, but I think you should know your plucking chords need to be swapped. It should go C then low G, not the other way around. It should sound like: High Low strum strum. Yours is: Low High strum strum. Listen to Iz's original and you'll hear it. Good job getting it very close. Just try to script the video better and play through it once before even talking- you'll attract more views.

I've been trying to figure this strum pattern out for some time, as he plays it a little different, from how he explains it, as others have mentioned here. What I am getting from his actual playing it, versus the explanation; is that the last up-down-up triplet is actually played: index finger(up), thumb(down), index(up), so that it makes it easier to get your thumb back on the C string for the starting note. And those last three notes can be either strummed across the strings or picking the individual strings A(index up) C(thumb down) A(index up), as it appears to me Aldrine does. That's my interpretation of it, if that makes any sense? i = index, t = thumb C ↓↑ x ↑(i) t i

Hey. I've gotta say, it's really a mental beating in tutorials when you (music teachers in general, actually) don't describe the little extra special things you are doing in tutorials. Like in this video you say the strum is down-up-chunk-up-down-up. But then when you play it your last "UP strum" is actually finger picking 2 strings and I can't see clearly how you are picking the E and A strings before you plug the C string. So in what order are you plucking the E and A string and are you only doing it with your index finger or are you plucing the E string with your thumb as well? I appreciate the little extra tricks you do in your tutorials so please describe what what YOU are doing completely as you make videos and not just the simpler way to do it :-)
@DiddyVonDiddy6 жыл бұрын
The "UP" for the last one is not supposed to be picking 2 strings, it's supposed to be a strum. It looks like finger picking because as I have found after trying it, it is easier to re-start the strum (as in hit the second string accurately) if you don't use a hand swing motion for the last "UP" but instead just move your finger across the strings. He is trying to keep his hand from moving too much for the last strum so sacrifices hitting the top 2 strings in order to get the first part of the strum right. If you move your whole wrist up for the last "UP" then it is a lot harder to accurately hit the 2nd string everytime. Also, I enjoy how it sounds without hitting the last UP as well, seems to work. Lastly, you can also just hit the 1st string instead of the 2nd string and still sounds good too.

@@DiddyVonDiddy youre completely wrong. Completely and totally wrong. The pickups on the and of 4 are PLUCKED, NOT STRUMMED. Listen to the original; Iz plucks them. The low G pluck on the Tenor is KEY to playing this correctly. No one on youtube teaches this beautiful song correctly. It breaks my heart. But this tutorial comes VERY VERY close to correct. it looks like you are describing the strumming pattern differently than how you are playing it. For me it is difficult after the last "up", coming back to the c string, pulling it again with no break in between. So i was trying to figure how yow you managed that. But it looks like you are just playing one string (the lowest?) with your index finger on the last "up-motion".... somebody got a hint how to train that? or is he actually using a different technique?
@TheChadio38147 жыл бұрын

I've gone through to find,not the best tutorial perse, rather the most correct strum pattern closest to that of IZ. So this is BY FAR the closest. The plucking you do is super close and almost corrected. You just need to pluck the G after the C, instead of plucking C twice, and you'd be completely correct for the C chord. Then your have to adjust for each following chord in the given key.

What do you mean by chunk up?!
@ukuleleunderground4 жыл бұрын
Hey Roan, thanks so much for watching! "Down" refers to a regular down strum, "Up" refers to a regular up strum, "Chunk" is a percussive technique (check out Ukulele Underground's How to Chunk video), and C means to pluck down on the C string using your thumb. So the pattern: C ↓↑X↑↓↑ means to hit the C with your thumb, come back up without strumming anything, down strum, up strum, chunk, up strum, down strum, up strum. You can actually just start off with a steady ↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑. After that, feel free to add the C instead of the first ↓↑ and the X instead of the 3rd ↓, when you practice and feel comfortable with those techniques.
