What tradition does he follow? Because ukuphalah is different with the tribe you come from or are trained in. Yellow candle is used to communicate with your mom's ancestors that's why you need to light it on first.

Kgotsong Atlegang. Yellow represents your maternal side guides and blue your paternal side guides. If the candle is not lighting, light the yellow and white and request your guides from both sides for clarity until then, then you can try again with your blue. In my understanding and knowledge.... yes colors do matter, certain colors deliver certain messages to our ancestors..n they call different ancestors forward so yes colors matter but white is the safest
