Finally I found this song, and a translation.. My mother used to sing it to me and it always felt like strengthening and healing to me.. Tho I am from Switzerland, nd so is my mother.. she grew up without her parents and already as a little child when she went through a lot of hardship, she was lying in bed and imagining that a native American would come on a horse and take her to a better place.. After beeing mistreated in three different stepfamilys she came to an orphanage, and even though she went through a lot of trauma she was the first child of this orphanage who made a higher education. With 18 years she was working and paying her pedagogical education. Besides of that she made a shamanic education with a student of Michael Harner. She could heal a lot with that and realized that her medicine is the music. She loves to play guitar and singing and I am so grateful and proud of my beloved mother!

My mother used to sing it to me as a lullaby when I was like 4 years old I guess and besides of my young age I was able to remember every sigle word in this song and sing it later having 18 or 19 yo. Never needed to look for lyrics and only wanted to know the meaning so I could better understand it when I sing that song

OMG! I finally found this song, 20+ years ago I first listen to it on a CD and religiously listened to it. I didn't know what the song was about but made myself learn it..I sung it to my niece when she was born many moons ago and then sung it to my own child later on, so yep this song has such 'Huge love in my heart... The "hundred years" version is a poem that was printed on the liner notes, and mistaken by some as a translation of the lyrics. It has nothing to so with the lyrics being sung. The poet's name was Shirley (Brewster?) and her family complained that Robertson never asked permission to use it.

I don't want to be trolling anyone, but you've got the translation for the song wrong, or were given wrong info. It is a VERY common mistake. The actual translation for the song is: 'Our hearts are full and our minds are good. Our ancestors come and give us strength. Stand tall, sing, dance and never forget who you are or where you come from. The other translation you have there is actually a poem, 'A Hundred Years' by an Ojibwe woman named Shirley Daniels in 1969. I think the confusion stems from the Robbie Robertson CD art for 'The Red Road' Album. He has this poem printed in the very front of the liner right next to the Tutelo-Saponi lyrics for Mahk Jchi, written by Pura Fe. You can go ahead and look it up if you like. dave Drolett Yes. I like your statement! Thank you. Sometimes I feel we are self-centered here. It's an easy habit to get into. I think music helps expand our horizons & makes us "think" of other peoples and cultures. I have an extensive library of music in other languages. Years ago when the one network that was doing the Olympics backed out of live coverage (and I don't have cable), I looked around and found coverage from Poland (I think, not quite sure) on the computer. I was watching the Olympics in real time & not having to listen to commentators. My grandson was around 5 or 6 at the time & he happened to be visiting. I'd had Russian music on & then he saw the Olympics in another language. He looked at me & said with all sincerity, "Grandma, do you have anything in English?" I still smile remembering that.
