Diarrhoea mixed with blood, specially if recurrent and more than 4weeks in duration, can be due to #ulcerative #colitis. Though a uncommon disease, Ulcerative colitis(UC) is a common cause of prolonged #bloody #diarrhoea and #rectal #bleeding.
It is due to inappropriate immune activation against colonic commensal bacteria
Disease usually start between 20-40 years of age.
Though only curative #treatment is surgery, medical therapy is able to control the disease in most of the patients.
Most common #symptoms are bloody #diarrhoea, urgency and incontinence.
Most commonly patients present with watery stool mixed with #blood, #mucus, pus.
Treatment depend upon extent and severity. Extent is determined be length of involvement during colonoscopy.
Severity is assessed by six parameters. Stool frequency, blood in stool, Pulse rate, temperature, ESR and hemoglobin.
Measalamines, steroids, azathioprine, methotrexate, infliximab, adalimumab, fecal transplant and surgery are mainstay of treatment.
Disease involving only the distal part can be controlled by enema and suppository. Enema are liquid or foamy preparations administered through the anus. Suppository are small bullet like tablets administered through the anus.
Ulcerative colitis can affect quality of life also, which can be improved by treatment
Patients with pancolitis and long duration disease of more than 10years has risk of colon cancer, which should be diagnosed and treated early.

Doctor you seem very professional and definitely you are telling all true information, thank you for that. But why you do not mention the importance of a correct nutrition and exercise? I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and I could heal myself once I have started to pay more attention to my diet and changing my lifestyle. I think treatment and medicine are necessary in the acute phase, but there is the need of a radical change on the “mantainance” phase. It is unacceptable to give no options other than take a pill for the rest of your life.

I am 46 years old and Pharmacy Graduate. I found out an ayurvedic formulation formulated by me which I need to take it for a month in 2 or 3 years. Also, 100% full stop on milk products including curd and buttermilk. Additionally, tension free lifestyle makes a vast difference. You will be fine. As far as I know, Take coconut water. Avoid sugar, greasy, spicy foods, junk foods, tea, coffee completely. Blend diet. Rice, vegetables, fruits. home made yogurt, butter milk. Hope this helps. Take care.
