Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory and autoimmune process that affects 1% of the population. It is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease that damages the lining of your intestinal tract.
If you have it, it can cause painful symptoms.
Tune in to hear more about what colitis is, how to know if you have it, and, most importantly, how you can treat it.

Very good info Dr. Ruscio. Some curcumin supplements are combined with gingerol and ginger oil. Do you think they are worth a try?

I am in Canada, and unfortunately, Health Canada does not allow me to prescribe soil-based probiotics, although using the Lacto/Bifido blend works well.

When I was just 21 months old 60+ years ago, my appendix burst and sepsis set in. That was the beginning of my gut issues. Three years ago I was hospitalized with ischemic ulcerated colitis with all of the above symptoms listed. The doctors were able to heal it. Mid September this year, I was once again hospitalized with the same thing, only so much more debilitating. I was on the way to checking out. I was life-flighted me a trauma hospital. The trauma surgeon was able to save enough colon to give me a somewhat normal life without a colostomy. My life will never be the same with just approximately 22 inches of my colon left. I don't feel hunger, but I feel pain. Depression, pain, insomnia, tiredness, weakness, infections are my life now. I am not sure I could have prevented what was a life-long condition. I wish I could have.

Thanks to you my daughter only suffered from severe pain and inflammation for a few months after she was diagnosed with IBD U-C. She did the meal replacement with a multivitamen and multi-strain probiotic, but I can't remember the first one we used. Three months after your recommendations my baby moves one more step into remission! Thanks for giving us hope! Her BMs have gone from one or two little rocks to three logs (I can't believe I'm getting excited about BMs 😊). They are still a bit cracked and we can't really pinpoint a pain level as she is still having her periods, which has always been painful. We see the gastrologist just before the middle of November and I can already hear him saying that he does not see the need for my daughter to see him. 😊 But it will be nice for us to hear him to say it. I'm elated! My daughter's story could also have been like sooo many other people's with GI issues that suffer for years, if not decades. Her energy level is off the chart. She is like the Energizer bunny. It's probably due to hyper-nourishing foods plus supplements. Now she can catch up on her school year again 🎉. I'm sticking with the Feingold diet and I'm hoping to keep her on something akin to a gluten-free Mediterranean diet.🤩 Me time now. Looking after my daughter has impacted my health a bit too. 💅🧘‍♀️💆🏽‍♀️🛀 💬 Please speak about how to stay in remission.🤞 Great explanation of UC 👏👏👏

Thank you for the information. I’m sure I’ve been dealing with this, or crohns. Never been tested. Started with poor sleep, and a lot of stress. Stools got very loose, and had some gut pains and bad wind. Had various skin issues, wheezing, and some gallbladder pain. It progressed to a very nasty pain in my lower right, in the area where the image at 1:13 shows. This all started in late 2019, and the lower right pain showed up in September 2021 when I had massive stress. When it started this pain was excruciating! I started with an elemental diet, which helped a lot. Then onto blended fruit smoothies and kefir every morning, had to cut out most green vegetables, and eat mainly root veggies. The thing that helped the most seemed to be cutting out grains like oats and millet which I was eating every morning. I was at a point where my diet was very limited, but I’m adding a few things back in now with much success. The pain in the lower right has eased, and flare ups are rare. It started with pain every day with the odd few days being pain free, now I’ll only feel it occasionally and don’t seem to flare now. The gallbladder pain has also eased, but feel a little fullness/numbness there occasionally, maybe stones or sludge? I’ve been very strict with my diet, sleep, and stress management, and it seems to be working, so if you’re suffering I hope this helps and gives you some hope and encouragement. Just realise that healing may take a long time!

Also forgot to add that I took a lot of antibiotics 15 years back for tonsillitis, which may have destroyed my gut microbiome and contributed to this. Ever since taking them I got terrible migraines, which are now also very rare since I started this healing process.

Hi Dr Rusico I have been having digestive problems for a bout 12 weeks I used to suffer from IBS over 10 years ago but changed my diet to a more lower carb way and saw my symptoms almost disappear I’m not sure why I’m getting problems again I take probiotics and digestive enzymes and drink bone broth regularly I’m seeing my doctor in a few days but I don’t expect much help Would you recommend I have my stool tested for bacterial infections or parasites and would any of your products help balance my gut ? I am willing to try anything, by the way I live in the UK Are your products available to me.

My daughter did not have diarrhea so much. Her problems had more to do with constipation, dizzy spells, gluten sensitivity / celiac disease, a sudden lactose intolerance, sneezing attacks, and cognitive issues at school. Even though her GI tract has healed now, we are still struggling with fixing the weight loss issue. She has cravings for starchy, sugary foods, most include refined flour or emulsifiers, which is a problem for me to watch her eat. She hates protein shakes and smoothies (autistic texture sensitivities) seemingly. Fast metabolism runs in the family as youngsters 😂 but causes problems later on approaching menopause. I don't want her to suffer from wrong food choice habits later.

Thank you, Dr. Ruscio. I heard there have been studies showing VSL is the most effective probiotic for UC. What do you think of VSL? Also, could be people with IBS have a mild, undiagnosed case of colitis?

Could availability of medical care influence your world map of ibd frequency? It would be usefully to see how many people, population percentage, in the low incident areas have had a colonoscopy in the past year. And how many people in the high incident areas have colonoscopies, population percentage. Otherwise your map is a diagram of easier access to modern medicine . Rocket surgery.
