Nielsen Flute Concerto Ulla Miilmann

The concert took place february 2014 in Copenhagen, shortly before Frühbeck de Burgos passed away after a long and brave battle against cancer.This concert will forever be in my heart, as will the musical soul of Frühbeck de Burgos. I miss you eveyday. Thank you for the music, Rapha!

Bravo. Lovely playing and very musical. I worked with Frühbeck de Burgos many years ago. He is such a wonderful conductor and a fine accompanist. I loved showing up on Nielsen Concerto day and seeing the clarinet and bass trombone player's faces thinking it was going to be an easy session. :)

I loved that you took some of the tempos slower! It allowed the listener to sink into the sound and really appreciate the beauty of the piece; more than just the incredible technique it requires but the musicality and depth too. Breath-taking!

Thank you for your kind comment. I agree with you, I think Nielsens pieces, including his woodwind quintet is often played far too fast. A lot of the folklore of his music is lost on behalf of fast tempi. Still, there were moments at this concert where I needed some more drive from the orchestra/conductor ;)

How nice to discover this terrific flute playing and performance of Nielsen here on KZbin. Beautiful playing, Ulla, I hope we can meet someday. It is poignant knowing it was one of this Maestro's last performances. I was fortunate to get to play the Mozart D major Concerto with him in 2011, and our orchestra loved performing Sheherezade under his baton on the same concert.

Hello and thank you for a wonderful performance. It is really a delight to hear a well-trained flutist play with such artistry and skill; a true master of the instrument! Although there are many fine flutists performing today on youtube, I cannot say there are many flutists who interest me or catch my attention with their performances. You are clearly in a class with the best such as Emmanual Pahud and Jimmy Galway. Your performance radiated a wonderful confidence, playing within your means (not over-playing with styles) and demonstrating superior tone, pitch and style. I look forward to other performances. many thanks for this wonderful performance of this under appreciated masterpiece. I hope to be able to watch a live concert some time. I did have the good fortune to see the Maestro live a few times the last being his guest performance with the NYPO around 2011 or 2012. His work was appreciated but not enough.

I know the tempi here and there were too slow. But the ol' man was weary and weak - almost holding back time to prolong life as long as possible

The tempo is perfect!!!!! I have not heard better. Everyone rushes through this piece and we lose all the beauties on the way. I am so happy you are not running! Fantastic performance and colour! Bravissima!

Played for him in Chicago in 1973. I think temps were slower then. But that was a long time ago. Great performance!

Ulla, this is SPECTACULAR!! I love the tempo choices, and agree with the others, it really allows one to feel the folksong genesis of this piece. Your sound is also amazing...Just brilliant! On a flute-technical note, I know you've long played a platinum Miyazawa flute; is there a specific reason you chose a gold flute for this performance? :)

Hi Josh. I loved my platinum flute, but I got injuries in both my shoulders, because it was too heavy. So I chose a Yamaha gold flute instead, which I also like a lot 😊

ullamiilmann Ah, I had assumed something like that was the case! :) I truly love platinum, but it does get SO heavy, especially with a gold mechanism. I really like the color spectrum you get out of the Yamaha, particularly in the Nielsen...I fell madly in love with a 14K Yamaha "Ideal" model with a Type A headjoint when I was in Tokyo; truly one of the finest flutes I've ever played. Can't wait to hear more of you on yours! :)
