I'm back in the hobby with a 32 gallon biocube after a 25 year hiatus, and am thrilled. So much has changed, and I'm finding the BRS videos to be the most informative series out there. Thank you to team BRS, and keep up the great work!

I'm starting my first 66 gallon reef ready tank at the moment! I had old saltwater tanks with HOB equipment. I'm currently about to put the rocks, sand and water in. You guys have helped me SO much throughout this whole process! Thank you so much! I love all your mistakes videos and the walk through videos. You guys are so helpful. Thank you!

This stuff is genuinely fascinating. I’ve never kept a saltwater tank before but I will be taking the plunge in the next few months. I’ve spent the last year watching your videos and I now feel at least elementally prepared to set up a ULM Zoanthid/softie tank. Not keen on constantly mixing up batches of saltwater, so this approach appeals to me.

Yes, I would consider the Triton method a ULM, if it reduces the frequency of water changes on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Making it only necessary for maintenance of siphoning out detritus in a sand bed or built up over time in the sump
@kurtpfeifer77356 жыл бұрын
When you cycle you don't have your skimmer going, right? What about carbon/GFO? Hold off on those until cycling is complete and starting to add livestock?

Dam, I got a 20 gallon hex. I put some live sand and dry rock. I haven’t put anything else in yet. Is it cycling now? Is the bacteria from the sand all I need to cycle the tank?
@garypedro80066 жыл бұрын
To eliminate the possibility of a sump overflow I drilled a hole in the glass for a high water overflow and ran a 1 inch PVC pipe outside. Now if the float valve contected directly to my RODI system sticks the water just runs outside. Thoughts????.

If Triton means no water changes then yep definitely a ULM approach. However I’m still “old school” and do water changes twice a month.

So just curious. I have added pods several times to the tank. I have always wondered what is the proper approach to doing so. The last few times I have taken a better approach by floating them to temperature acclimate, and the last time I even drip acclimated them. Is that a waste of time?

And the protein skimmer while cycling the tank or do you leave it off until you add fish?
@harshrealities62135 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan. I am having a problem cycling my 75 gallon aquarium. It has been running for 4 weeks and the ammonia will not come down. I started with Dr. Tims one and only 2 8oz bottles. Then i dosed with Dr. Tims ammonium chloride, bringing the ammonia to 2ppm. There is 5 gallons of bio balls in my trickle filter and 40 pounds of coral sea argalive as substrate. The ammonia is now at 4.0ppm with no nitrite and nitrates at 20. Temp is at 80 degrees and skimmer is off. Where did i go wrong?
@BRStv5 жыл бұрын
What test kit are you currently using to test ammonia? It looks like there has been conversion to Nitrate. We would watch the MACNA video by Dr. Tim on cycling the tank. This gives really good information to help with cycling your tank. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHWsaKaupqhgqdU

During any of these weeks, do I run the protein skimmer and filter socks?
@BRStv4 жыл бұрын
We opted not to run filter socks, but if you are, most of us would run them right away. As far as the skimmer goes, I'd also run that right away to get it through it's break in period. Just be sure to turn the skimmer off while you're adding any sort of liquid bacteria supplement.

Ryan, my new saltwater tank is in its 7th week of cycling. Tests show me that the levels of nitrates have been decreasing dramatically each day. It seems that the tank will finish cycling very soon. The level of salinity of the water is perfect but the PH is 6.5 since the very first day I started the process, it never changed. Should I just buy livestock now or should I have to adjust PH level?? How do I do it?? What else should I do before putting animales once the cycling is done?? Thank you.
@georgearias73366 жыл бұрын
The cycling process of my tank finished 2 weeks ago. I removed the lid of the tank (2 weeks ago) for oxygenation and I also install a small Koralia pump to increase the water movement. The PH of the saltwater mix was 6.5 the first day, the same level during the cycling process and today keep being exactly the same. The PH never has changed a bit. I wonder how could that affect to corals and fish? It seems to be like getting rid of the lid and adding a powerhead didn't do it. What other alternatives are available? Thank you for your support.

What is ULMEST (new word) than triton? It took me a month to tune up a calcium reactor, water changes,etc. Plus Triton is great to the environment. PS I don't work at triton but like there products. If you do: Triton give me free stuff.

If chaeto uptakes ammonia then wouldn't adding the chaeto so early in the cycle slow the growth of beneficial bacteria? As in the chaeto will compete with the growth of beneficial bacteria early on?

I’m freshwater aquarists but I might change to salt water, but for now just fish! My Q: the water parameters need to be the same fish and corals?
@vishnusridhar45066 жыл бұрын
Fish and corals will live in same water parameters . But for corals you need to be much more careful with your parameters .!! In terms of freshwater it's like saltwater fish are like having anubias plants where as corals are like those high end rotala plants.
@sebastianperdomo35806 жыл бұрын
It’s like a Venn diagram of the parameters for fish and coral. You want to stay right where the two circles meet.

Hi BRS family, one question, I decided to use the kit of red sea(mature pro kit) to start my cycle , in the instructions it is commented that a period of light of 10 hours is needed. Could I omit that and cover my tank like you and go adding the formulas that says the instructions?
@UnfilteredJustice6 жыл бұрын
Espacio Marino I don't know how the Red Sea kit works, but usually when cycling you want to keep the lights off so algae won't form, and let just the bacteria populate the tank. Sounds like Red Sea has a different approach.
@espaciomarino23006 жыл бұрын
exactly, thats the reason im asking! because in the 160G tank of BRS they use the Red Sea mature Pro KIT.

It's can take 8 weeks for first set of bacteria to grow. Than you need next set 8 more weeks. Than 8 more than 8 more for phosphates bacteria to grow. Longer you take it's always better. Just saying. Slowly add fish.
