Except Aizen used it to measure their current reiatsu, if you thought of it that way it makes more sense, trying to use the number as something that denotes their actual combat prowess and position is really worthless the show and manga already told us that out if all the espadas and their followers it's only Ulqiorra who Aizen sends out to do any important missions; hell Ulqiorra is arguably the true leader among the Espadas he's the only one doing jack shit and accomplished most of his tasks, even Yammy doesn't talk badly about him to his face, unlike the others who he sees as beneath him, and who Aizen has absolute trust in.

I always thought that the rankings were given at X time but of course eventually if one is better than another or has less dificulties to improve/train, the ranks will be messed up

​​@@yamatonoryuujin4871 Based on his speech about trust, Aizen doesn't really have trust in anyone nor demand it, it's just that he has no extreme emotions or personality and is therefore more reliable tool in his eyes. I wouldn't say he is the strongest, unless their is legitimate proof stating or showing it. We only see him fight one guy, Ichigo/Vasto Lorde Ichigo. Are they're examples of this "inconsistency "?

Not Ulquiorra fanboy but I mean they kinda did a poor job in portraying him as 4. He's the literally the only arrancar to have a 2nd stage release. & that display of power when he fought Vasto Lorde Ichigo is just insane. I mean I can see Starrk being more powerful than him due to his reiatsu. or from Barragan due to his crazy ability. But they're just failing so hard in convincing that Halibel is stronger than him. & even then, the way they portrayed him makes him looks like they're so much stronger than the 3 strongest espadas.

My theory has been that Aizen knew of Ulquiorra’s second stage transformation, but let him think he didn’t. And this is why he trusted him to be in charge of Las Noches while he was gone. And why he gave him so much autonomy when out on missions. And also explains why he wasn’t #1, because no one else knew of his secret. It also serves to demoralize Ichigo, to make him think that if #4 is this strong, then they have no chance against 1-3.

Funny thing is, his number 4 is kind of metaphorical in a Japanese belief. Because just like of the 13th or the number 13, 4 also symbolizes something related to death or about "unfortune".
