Ulster Scots did not join the Irish War of Independence, they are Fiercely Loyal to the Crown. In the Plantation of Ulster, it was English Nobles who got Land Titles and the Scots were hard pressed "Tenant Farmers". Most of the Highlanders were put in the poorest lad in Ulster, Province, Donnegall a windswept rocky county on the North West Coast. However, that is now in the Free-Republic of Ireland. The Scots in the 13 Colonies that remained Loyal to the Crown, fled to Nova Scotia. The Scots/Irish that joined the Rebellion and fought in the War for Independence were given Land Grants in the Appalachian Mountains by George Washington after the war.

Growing up in Scotland I spoke Scots at home with my folks and strictly English at school. I was discouraged from speaking Scots by teachers who would tell us to "speak properly" and stop using "slang". Also a relative would put my mum down for speaking Scots because to him it was low class. I write/type in English, but speak Scots in a regional Dundonian dialect. To say Scots is just a dialect of English is just ignorant. There are 4 main dialects of the Scots language in Scotland, Insular, Northern, Central and Southern. Then there are cities within those regions that have their own dialects. There is a half-arsed hybrid version of English with a few Scots words thrown in going around that I think gets mistaken by the English (and perhaps some Scots) as the Scots language. It's no wonder they think of this hybrid as just a dialect. But proper Scots is of course a language, no question. Speaking/learning Scots should be encouraged not discouraged, same goes for Speaking/learning Gaelic.

Isn't Scots and English (particularly very northern English) intertwined? I have heard from some quarters that the the Borders Scots are simply northern English - which is I am sure an insult, but can it also be true that the peoples of Northumbria etc are also a form of southern Scots?

This is great!!! I will share it. Honestly Im a Scots Catholic of Irish descent living most of my life in New York. So some of the basic assumptions of reality in this funny documentary are a bit antiquated, but thats the nature of the game. In general Id say that although I believe the plantation was an invasion, Im glad to reset my past cultural prejudices by hearing about the Ulster history and culture. Theres a lot of things I never would have guessed. It answers a lot of questions about mindsets of radicaism and liberality of the Ulster plantationists who indeed were a massive part of the history of America and revolution over here. And Im very proud indeed of my homeland Scotland and know the stocky, hearty Ayrshire farmer culture that the majority of the plantation folks came from so this plugs me in. Believe it or not, Id always thought they were not-at-all persecuted for their faith but of course it wasnt that simple. So thanks for opening my mind in such a fun and funny way

My wife is of Irish descent. I do not know who they are but I supposedly have some Irish ancestry, according to 23 & Me, mostly from the Ulster, Dublin and Cork areas. They actually may be the current locations of descendants of my English and Scottish ancestors. Due to the Plantation Period of Irish history. They are often called Scots- Irish, because their DNA is so similar. Mine immigrated into Virginia, then to Pitt County, North Carolina and after the Revolution into Georgia, due to their service in the Revolutionary War. The Robinsons settled in Brantley County, GA and my Tomlinson ancestors into Clinch County, GA. My Daniel ancestors migrated from Middlesex County, VA to Granville County, NC, then to Wayne County, NC and later to Burke and Jefferson County, GA.

I agree with that man who said you can't make assumptions based on surnames because a man with the surname Smith in lets say County Antrim might be protestant but then a man from let's say county Kildare with the same surname Smith might often be Catholic. Same with Gaelic surnames because Duncon may be seen as Scottish in Ulster but then their might be some one with the same surname in Galway with a similar sounding name maybe with some difference in spelling and so maybe the Scottish Duncan name comes from the Scottish Gaelic name eg. Dùn Cainn*(that's not the true meaning I'm just making up an example) and it may be associated with the protestant Ulster Scots in Ulster but then there may be an Irish Catholic name possibly with a similar origin from Irish Gaelic that may be found in way down south in Kerry and could come from Dún Cainne (again made up example, not tru etymology)

The reason that the Ulster Scots seem to be so homogenized today is that nearly all of those that might have disagreed ultimately left and emigrated to the American colonies. I am one of the descendants of those Ulster Scots that left in the late 17th and early 18th centuries (immigrating to the Appalachian mountains in what is now the United States). That's right, I am the descendant of American "hillbillies" -- a name that is derived from William of Orange. The irony is that this particular remnant of the Ulster Scots were THE predominant group forming George Washington's continental army. (If you don't believe it, look into the history recorded from perspective of the British army. It shows that the English were well aware that the American Revolution was a revolt that was largely comprised of Ulster Scots.) From that perspective, regardless of what type of Celtic ancestry that one might claim (i.e. Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, Breton, etc.), this group of people finally achieved what that other Celtic tribes could only dream of, viz. they kicked the English and their army out of their country for good. That said, I feel compelled to tout my Welsh ancestry as well. I've traced some of them back to an ancestor that was born in Warwick county Virginia in 1618 (near the Jamestown colony founded in 1607). Thus, some of my Welsh ancestors had sense enough to "get the hell out" BEFORE the English civil war. To them, being massacred by the Powhatan Indians in 1622 was somehow preferrable to living under British rule. -- Michael C. McGary (email: Michael.C.McGary@live.com) P.S. BTW, only one of my four grandparents was Ulster Scot. The other 3 all have last names that are decidedly Welsh in origin.

@@harrywilliamson33 Actually Duncan is of Irish origin not scottish, it comes from old Irish Donnchadh and is related to the Irish surname McDonagh. So it's the other-way around Duncan is of Irish origin and the name made its way to scotland from Ireland. Similar to MacCormack from the Irish personal name cormac. As for Conner Mcgregor his maternal line is Irish and his paternal line is scottish. He's Irish because he was born and grew up here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_(given_name)

@@brucecollins4729 Duncan is a Irish name from Donnchadh, people use the gallowglass nonsense to explain away any name or surname in Scotland of Irish origins, which is a incredibly huge amount. Duncan appears in Ireland long before the gallowglass come to Ireland in the mid 13th century. Gallowglass names account for about 5 surnames/names in Ireland out of thousands. The first person to bare the name was the Irish king in the 8th century Donnchad Midi-Duncan en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnchad_Midi

I'm Irish born Catholic. There were no natives in South Africa when the boer settled then. The blacks who are in charge now are the descendants of more Northern tribes who were attracted by the prosperity the boer generated. My prob with the ni Protestant orders is their vain glory which is based on fake news. Ireland is Ireland, not Scotland. Having said that, this hypocrite lives quite happily in Australia and if I was truly logical I'd give my property back to the aborigines (my local indigenous people are the Wathaurang). Every nation has had uninvited colonisers and it always works out in a century or two. Fun fact, if it wasn't for the Presbyterians who wrote in Irish, preached in Irish and translated the Bible into Irish (to the shock horror of the Catholic Church) then there would be no Irish language for the hard-line nationalists to get all sentimental about.btw the Church of Ireland needs a bit of praise for the same thing whilst RC stuck to Latin.

Message to you from New York City. Believe me friend, dont fall down the fool-hole of starting this 'fake news' crapola. You just look like an idiot. Try having other opinions cos we will listen to u and take u srsly and not roll our eyes if you have your own thoughts and stop emulating our mistaken leaders that we somehow allowed in.

There's a big difference between Imigrants and colonists. Also the Irish are the people who settled and created scotland, they arguably have a bigger claim to Scotland than you do. Further more they're not annexing your country like the ulster scots are in Ireland.

My parents and two sisters were born in Northern Ireland . My Dad was born in Armagh, Mum in Omagh and sisters in Belfast. Dad was a "Davidson" and a Protestant. Mum was a "Starrs" and a Catholic. It was considered a "Mixed Marriage". My Mother's Mother's maiden name was "Darcy" My Father's family had originally came from Scotland to Ireland, l have no idea of the date. I was the baby of the family, and was born in England. I ended up moving to America, but l am very proud of my roots.
