It's been a year of using the previous filter design, and I went all out with version 2. Tool-less servicing, easier to assemble and 3d print, basically better in every way.

Thank you for open-sourcing all of it. This comment might not buy you a beverage of your choosing, but I hope it at least gives a bit back of the energy you put into this project. Again, thank you.

This is really cool. I wish I had something more meaningful to say, but I'm brand new to the hobby and not well versed enough to give better feedback. But I'm really glad that you made this because this is something that I've been concerned about.

Thanks. I was in the same boat, I was traveling in an RV and was concerned even with PLA in such a small space. For sure when you print something like ABS you need something to filter the styrene VOC’s.

I am currently trying to design my own enclosure and I am trying to learn more about the intricacies of pressure and temperature in the enclosure. I want to close my enclosure during prints but I want to keep my enclosure airtight to prevent dust from entering the enclosure. I would be grateful if you could answere to a few misconcpetions I have regarding this issue. 1. Do I need to exahust the air coming out of the filter? I am unsure if I need to have a exahust area in my enclosure where the air exits from the filter to the enviroment. 2. How do you regulate temperature in an enclosure? I am new to this specifically so if you may provide some points and suggestions on what to look into that would be great. 3. how do you know how much activated carbon you use as well as the size of the HEPA filter? when do you have to change them? I would be really grateful to hear back from you

I like it! I spotted ender 3? with some modifications and psu/board/display moved outside the enclosure. Can you please show in a video your 3d printer setup, how you modified it, and why you did the modification?

I may do one here. I’ve held off because because the latest generation of printers like the Bambu P1S or X1 are so much better and honestly cheaper than all the mods I’ve done 😂.

This looks great, seems like you've really put a lot of thought and consideration into this design. Do you have any measurements of VOCs/UFPs with and without the filter?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 4 ай бұрын
I didn’t have a good way to measure the VOCs or particulates, so I don’t want to make any guarantees. That being said this design should be overkill for a 3D printer. I looked at a lot of filters designed for small fume hoods and this is comparably sized to those filters. The biggest improvements would to be to use finer or even a multistage carbon filter. But I didn’t see this even in the industrial 3D printer filters I looked at. I wish there were more literature and research available on the topic.

This looks like exactly what I need for my rig. I’m super stoked, thank you so much! How do you know when it’s time to change the HEPA and the Carbon? Is there a ballpark number for how many hours they can take before needing replacement?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 4 ай бұрын
The HEPA filter you can see when it gets clogged with particulates and dust. I’m still on my first one and I have several hundred hours on it. I’m hesitant to provide a ballpark on the activated charcoal because it depends on so many factors. Ideally you’d have something to measure the VOC levels coming out of the filter. The charcoal will absorb VOC’s out of the air, so I change mine every 6mo regardless of use. If I smell fumes I also would also change it. I’ve only changed mine once after printing about 2.5kg of nylon and polycarbonate.

Great project and v2 update. How were you able to graph or simulate the airflow in the enclosure?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 4 ай бұрын
I used a CFD software called OpenFOAM just to see how the flows behaved. It showed pretty much that no matter what design you use, if you move enough air in a small space it mixes pretty well.

I'm super interested in this! I made the bento box, but I don't feel it does anything (not enough air flow/circulation and filter media). How loud is that blow fan you are using? I print in my office so I'm curious if this is noisy.
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 4 ай бұрын
At low speeds it’s not too much louder than my printer fans. I tend to run it at higher speeds for ABS/nylon though, and it’s fairly loud like a computer server fan if you’ve ever heard one. You could design a muffler for the exhaust (I have bolt holes provided for that kind of thing). Depending on your enclosure, a bit of sound deadening on the enclosure wall that it’s mounted too may help. My enclosure seems to amplify the sound.

My enclosure is Masonite for now. It’s worked well, but fire is always a concern when active heating. I’ve bought an old server steel server enclosure that I will be moving it into.

where do i get the filter material? do you think this would be good for a resin printer?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 4 ай бұрын
I’m not sure on that. It will absorb VOCs but it will work best for a small enclosed space maybe 4-8cubic feet. The activated charcoal is available on many websites, it’s often used for fish aquarium filter media. I have a link to some on printables.

This would be pretty close to perfect if it had a way to automatically shut the louver and turn off the fan in the event of high-temp/fire.
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 4 ай бұрын
Yeah. You could definitely cut off the power to the fan using a fire sensor and a mosfet. Fire is always a concern of mine, I don’t trust my 3D printer at all and never leave the house during a print.
@Pics2FlicksDennis

@@IndeterminateDesign agree 100%. I have an automatic fire extinguisher in each enclosure and networked smoke detectors in the maker space that trigger detectors on our other floors. I print a lot of multi-day prints, and while I don’t print while I’m out of the house, I do print overnight. I sleep a little better with these measures in place.

My concern with that filter is the VOCs. While it has some activated carbon on the foam filter, it's very very little compared to what this and most industrial 3d printer filters use. I would not feel comfortable with it, but I'm not an expert by any means.

recirculating the air removes almost any smell when printing asa or abs for me also keeps temps nicely. im using a corexy printer so it blows bit on the AC bed what helps heating it up
